Is this combi boiler quote for elderly mum reasonable?

Hi, my mum’s combi boiler (about 13 years old) has broken down and British Gas have provided her with a quote for a new one. It’s about £4k and I wanted to get your views on whether this is reasonable as we haven’t done this before.

Combi Boiler : £1,300
Installation: £1850
Tailored extras: £800

Total: £4k.

I have attached a pic of the details.

Mum is in a 3 bed semi, with 8 radiators (which will not be changed) and the plumbing was all renewed 10 years ago. The boiler will be installed in the same place.

Thanks in advance.

This quite definitely seems too high. We paid around 2k for boiler and installation about 3yr ago in the SE. I’d cancel the install at least until you can check eligibility for any financial support and if not, get some quotes from local boiler fitters.

GettingStuffed · 04/03/2023 21:26

We had one put into my late in-law's house recently and it was about that. There were so many problems , like a slow gas leak and they had loads of extra work but still stuck to the quote which was in the ball park of your MiLs quote

Get a quote from Boxt. DM had excellent service from them and about half that price.

Yes recommend boxt we also had a very positive experience with them

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 04/03/2023 21:26

That's about what it cost for us to switch from a boiler and immersion heater to a combi, plus with some radiators changed. It was three or four days work.

In our old house we had a combi replaced and the British Gas quote was nearly twice the quote we went for in the end.

BashfulClam · 04/03/2023 21:27

Worcester Bosch website says supply and installation for £2,300.

tanstaafl · 04/03/2023 21:29

As a pp mentioned the system should be flushed as part of the replacement of a boiler and magnetic filter installation.
I think the power flush is a cheeky upsell.

we’ve got google nest, installed by us after we had the Ideal combi installed by a local installer.
Though we’ve used a tablet to program it, other than that it’s just a thermostat on the wall to all intents and purposes. Each to their own though.

one thing I noticed was the ‘free’ 5 year warranty.
pour boiler has a 10 year warranty as standard, 12 if you install the Ideal magnetic filter which we did.

surely a Worcester combi comes with a longer than 5 year warranty?

Abitofalark · 04/03/2023 21:30

I would not use British Gas because it is overpriced and not any better. Last boiler I had installed by an ex-British Gas fitter. He was well qualified and knowledgeable but hard to get.

There's another company I know of in SW London which seems to be popular with locals, although I have not used it myself. It's not on your doorstep but not a million miles from Hounslow. I don't know how far they travel but it seems reasonably likely to be within range.

Daffodilsandbeer · 04/03/2023 21:30

It’s less than mine was foe British Gas, so unless a weird issue I’d think it right,

Blingstar · 04/03/2023 21:31

I think Bosch Worcester boilers are guaranteed for 10 years. I'd check their site for a recommended installer in her area and get some comparisons.

annlee3817 · 04/03/2023 21:33

Our plumber charges £700 for a straight forward installation, and then it's just the cost of the boiler on top, we didn't have HIVE, we chose a Honeywell mobile thermostat. Total cost was £2,000 and that was two months ago. That included any system flushes. Another quote we had was for £3,000 and was a more expensive boiler.

RiverRobin · 04/03/2023 21:39

Any work that you need - always get 3 quotes. I’m in East Anglia so I know the prices would be different, but that quote seems extortionate!

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 04/03/2023 21:40

I’ve just had a new boiler. I decided to get 3 quotes:

Local company £2300
Boxt £3215
British gas £5970 😳

For further words needed…

Pinkblanket · 04/03/2023 21:40

Also came on to recommend Boxt. Did a fab job. The guy who does our servicing/repairs etc (but doesn't fit whole new systems) recommended them to us.

Mol1628 · 04/03/2023 21:41

Just had the same boiler installed. Cost 2300 and that included moving it downstairs. I’m in Yorkshire though. Used a reputable local company.

The 5 year guarantee is a bit crap. Should be 10 years with Worcester.

Alarchbach · 04/03/2023 21:41

I paid £1895 two years ago and that was to change the whole system from the old standard boilers with the immersion tank to a combi boiler.
Id never pay British Gas prices x

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/03/2023 21:44

If she calls Worcester direct, they can advise who they use in the locale for their maintenance/install. We did this when we wanted to replace our Baxi. Rang Baxi direct and they told us who local was a Baxi connected, self employed, boiler fitter. So we rang them direct and they ordered the boiler direct with Baxi who sent it to our house. We paid the installer not Baxi.

Bedofroses2 · 04/03/2023 21:46

Another vote for Boxt! You order the boiler through them and they use local fitters to install them. We had ours done in 2020 and had a great experience with them. It was £1.5k in the North East

pishkashante · 04/03/2023 21:46

Thanks everyone, I’m reading every post, this is very helpful.

I can’t seem to find a link to apply for a free boiler for mum. Do you think this has been replaced with that heat pump grant?

On the BOXT application, does every question have to be answered correctly, it is ok if you don’t know the answer to some question?

FeelingRejected333 · 04/03/2023 21:49

Just answer best you can, if the boiler is being replaced for the same type and in the same place, then it’s a pretty straightforward job for them

annlee3817 · 04/03/2023 21:50

Try this OP www.gov.uk/apply-boiler-upgrade-scheme

melonraspberry · 04/03/2023 21:50

I recently had Worcester Bosch boiler and full central heating fitted for 6k, so that’s def too high!

NorthernSpirit · 04/03/2023 21:51

I paid £2,400 for a Worcester Bosh boiler + fitting in 2021 for a 3 bed terrace in West London.

I would get a 2nd quote from an independent plumber (British Gas will have a huge markup).

MishaBukvic · 04/03/2023 21:54

Jeez that's expensive. £1000+ labour charge ? A combi to combi exchange is normally a days work .
Google a Worcester Bosch horizontal flue, they're about £75, not over £200.

Try Boxt and/or go on to Vaillant or Worcrster Boilers own sites and you can find an engineer in your local area.

MishaBukvic · 04/03/2023 21:57

Also I don't get why British gas are promoting 5 years warranty when thr Worcester 4000 comes with 7 years as standard...

Standard Guarantee - 7 Years
With any Greenstar System Filter - 8 Years

NellePorter · 04/03/2023 22:01

I would also recommend Boxt
