Is this combi boiler quote for elderly mum reasonable?

Hi, my mum’s combi boiler (about 13 years old) has broken down and British Gas have provided her with a quote for a new one. It’s about £4k and I wanted to get your views on whether this is reasonable as we haven’t done this before.

Combi Boiler : £1,300
Installation: £1850
Tailored extras: £800

Total: £4k.

I have attached a pic of the details.

Mum is in a 3 bed semi, with 8 radiators (which will not be changed) and the plumbing was all renewed 10 years ago. The boiler will be installed in the same place.

Thanks in advance.

It's between £2 and £3k for like for like combi replacement round here (Cheshire).
You could probably get it done for £3k but it's finding a reliable plumber. What about that Pimlico chappie who's always on the telly (apologies if it's not feasible I have no idea if someone in Pimlico covers all parts of London).

Cosyblankets · 04/03/2023 20:53

4 bed detached here in North West replaced old style tank etc for combi so therefore more work. Paid about 3k about 3 years ago.
3 bed semi same area replaced combi about 18 months ago so like for like just under 2k.
Shop around

My MIL gets state pension and top up with Pension credit, this gave her a free boiler. PLEASE CHECKOUT THIS B4 YOU DO ANYTHING.

Boiler price is ok. The other stuff you’re paying a premium as it’s British Gas. Could easily get cheaper shopping around depends if you want the hassle/risk. At least you can be reasonably confident BG will do what they say.

British gas are no better than most other installers and sub a lot of their work out and are ridiculously expensive.

Get more quotes as British gas are know for being over priced.

pishkashante · 04/03/2023 20:53

Thanks everyone, I don’t think she needs hive, she doesn’t even have a smartphone.

Would she be allowed to cancel? They are coming on Tuesday to fit it.

If you look at bottom of second letter it mentions a 14 day cooling off period, Is she within that.

Thanks. She receives PIP and Pension Credit and her last boiler 10+ years ago was free as part of Warm home scheme.

I called British Gas a few days ago and they said very few people get a free boiler now, even they are eligible.

Shall we hold off? I did apply but they said it would take 2 weeks to get a response.

Its advisable, otherwise it could be a total waste spending so much on a new boiler.

I got a new boiler 1 year ago. They didn't think a powerflush was necessary. I didnt take the hive thermostat. Was also BG but cheaper. They offer interest free credit too.

Yea, they came and did the quote on 2 March and are due to fit on Tuesday.

You can log onto british gas and yes you do have cooling off period so you can actually cancel online. Take up this issue with local council who will sort out a free boiler, who is you local council?

British Gas are well known for overcharging. However, that quote didn't surprise me.

It's worth getting another couple of quotes, if possible from recommendations or well known locals.

We ended up getting five in 2005. Two were incredibly cheap, next one we then had two bad review, next one wouldn't put it in writing. We went with most expensive, but he was brilliant then, immediate aftercare and is still our much trusted engineer

but can you control it?
My SIls mother has home carers and dementia and she control everything from the ring door bell to the heating from 300 miles away

Drstrange · 04/03/2023 21:02

If it turns out she isn’t eligible for a free one then I would definitely look into Boxt, they did ours a couple of years ago, the engineer turned up on time within 2 days and had it all done within about 6 hours. They were much cheaper than other quotes we had for the same boiler.

Merryoldgoat · 04/03/2023 21:03

I’m in London and about 4 years ago I had a completely new system (gravity changed to combi) for less than that.

Given no plumbing changes that’s massively overpriced.

MLGREAR · 04/03/2023 21:04

You can qualify for a new boiler on the ECO government scheme if you receive at least one benefit, such as income support or housing benefit. You need to be the homeowner, and your boiler has to be broken.

RedChooChoo · 04/03/2023 21:05

We got a new boiler about 2 weeks ago, an Ideal Vogue Max I think it is, with the Halo smart thermostat (similar to hive) and we paid £2900. We switched from a very old boiler with a hot water cylinder to a combi, and have 7 rads. It also includes a 12 years warranty including parts AND labour.

Bluebird1234 · 04/03/2023 21:11

You do get a years cover and good guarantees with BG. They turn up and you have comeback.

FeelingRejected333 · 04/03/2023 21:11

We had a new one fitted by heatable in dec £2200. New combo boiler, fitted & take the old one away, with a cheaper thermostat. I ordered online and fitting was a few days later.

same price from boxt too, but there fitting was a few days longer than heatable.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 04/03/2023 21:12

We got one through IHeat two years ago. Was about a grand and a half cheaper than the BG quote I had:

iheat.co.uk/

my elderly boiler was completely kaput and it was really cold (so cold I had to give some of my houseplants to a neighbour to keep them alive) and it was fitted within 48 hours.

They use local forms so you won’t have the same fitters as I’m NW but they were prompt, tidy and pleasant!

Haffiana · 04/03/2023 21:14

We had a similar Worcester Bosch combi installed 6 years ago including replacing all the pipework from imperial to metric (that was how old the previous combi was!) and it came to over £4000. Central London. We had 5 quotes and all were fairly similar, but we only asked for quotes for Worcester or Vaillant. There are cheaper boilers but they aren't as good and won't last as long.

Jengnr · 04/03/2023 21:15

Cost me £1700 in June with a local contractor. New boiler, 7 year warranty.

DazedandConcerned · 04/03/2023 21:17

I used iHeat in July. £2500 all in for a top of the line Worcester Bosch for a 3 bed semi - 9 radiators. Came with a wireless thermostat as well

You seen the charges....no wonder he drives a super expensive Merc....!!...i think his company charge about 400 an hour labour....bonkers...my friend used them once...bill was ridiculous for a tiny job !

JMSA · 04/03/2023 21:22

Please don't get your hopes up over a free boiler - it is rare to get, as there are so many loopholes.
