Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

It might be from “the midnight gang” by David Walliams. That’s what my kids went as.

Snap😀

(Although I would question why pjs on world book day … what character is that supposed to be?! I have autism and that would annoy me more)!

Yes, I hate this lazy trend of pjs for world book day. It’s like they just can’t be bothered to put the effort in, or know the parents of their school won’t put effort in, so cop out and say it’s pyjamas.
I hate seeing people in pjs in the daytime and especially out of the house so this would’ve really put me about too OP.
my DCs headteacher looked fabulous this morning as the Scarecrow from Alice in Wonderland. Absolutely no pyjamas in sight, thank god!!!

Ivyy · 02/03/2023 09:54

@Needmorelego Ahh thank you! Though slap on the wrist for myself as then realised I didn't read op's details properly and the whole school were in pj's Blush

Jooliusreezer · 02/03/2023 09:55

Some people on here clearly have fuck all understanding about why they choose pyjamas for WBD.

It’s so children with less engaged parents, or children living in financial hardship, are not excluded or humiliated if they can’t afford a costume. Pretty much everyone has pyjamas. It’s a way of making sure everyone is able to join in.

And then kids are invited to bring or tell their favourite bedtime story.

YabVu!
My nursery's theme was bedtime stories and the kids were to come in pjs, it's much more inclusive and the staff were all in pjs today. It makes it so much more fun for the children and it cuts out the 'why aren't you dressing up' questions from the kids

AutisticLegoLover · 02/03/2023 09:56

Well of course I can see the connection, I'm autistic, not thick.

I've already concluded that I am unreasonable about it. Do people not read updated comments from the OP on threads?

I like the pyjamas for world book day. It’s more inclusive. Everyone has them and you aren’t buying plastic tat that will go to landfill. I know you can be inventive and make your own but it’s a lot when you work full time. Ours is tomorrow and you can choose fancy dress or pjs for a day of book filled activities which sounds nice.

HotWaterBottleAndABook · 02/03/2023 09:56

Teachers can't win:

Don't dress up = boring, not getting into the spirit, 'upsets' children because they're not getting involved

Do dress up = unprofessional, not wearing appropriate clothing

I hate dressing up anyway and am so glad I quit my teaching job 5 years ago.

Or, maybe we are in the middle of a cost of living crisis and world book day costumes are a complete waste of money and time. There is that.

I am extremely thankful that our school have done a pj day.

'Tom's Midnight Garden' is the one that springs to mind for me.

Can we not be twats here, please? This isn't pearl-clutching. OP has been very open that she needs a bit of explanation of how this fits with social norms as it's difficult for her to assess given her autism and past trauma, and she's had an emotional response which she is trying to rationalise.

Once more for the people at the back.

Quite a lot of twattery on this thread, and not from the OP.

Perhaps you live in an affluent area. It’s often chosen for deprived areas for the reasons I listed above.

Skiphopbump · 02/03/2023 09:58

I had a meeting with the school SENCO during world book day, she was dressed as Cat in the hat (she had face paint on). It was a serious meeting and it did feel inappropriate.

honeyrider · 02/03/2023 09:58

YABNVU OP

You're coming across as a fun vampire. Not everything is about you, the principal was doing a fun thing for the pupils not you.

Reality check needed.

Lazy? Really? No idea how some parents genuinely might not have either the time or money to pull together a costly and time consuming outfit every year.

We put together Hermione for my daughter but it took a day of op shopping for the right items and size plus a tie from a proper shop, even op shopping it was still reasonably costly and very time consuming.

I can't help but think you just put out a goady post on purpose because surely no one is as dense as that in real life.

Sorry OP, they don't. You will continue to get a stream of comments from people who have only read your first post and then jumped to comment. If you've got what you needed from this thread then you might want to consider hiding it.

@MNHQ need to give us the option to pin an update from the OP. I've seen a couple of people request it.

That's a bit strong. There is no need to be quite so vehement about it.

And I'm on the side that it's a harmless bit of fun and great to see an excuse to relax the draconian uniform/professional propriety rules for one day.

You are being very unreasonable. Do you always suck the joy out of fun things?

What a nasty comment.

ilovesooty · 02/03/2023 09:59

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2023 09:14

Because costumes are expensive and kids already own nightwear. It's less exclusionary.

And teachers shouldn't have to fund any additional expense for their own costumes.

no, I don't. I read the start of a thread and maybe respond to some posts, it pops up in my notifications, and I read what is currently being said.

There can easily be many pages in the middle that I simply don't see

I think it is quite normal for several conversations to be going on between different posters on the same thread, and others to still be responding to the start of the thread, and some responding to the end, and missing middle bits.

I sometimes read all the posts from the OP, but not always.

Don't worry about people still responding to earlier posts without seeing your updates, that is always going to happen

It’s one bloody day. Parents have had since last March to sort something, come on! Yes, it’s lazy! Very much so.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 02/03/2023 10:00

I think you're being a bit silly OP.

Inastatus · 02/03/2023 10:01

Having read the posts saying that pj’s are a deliberate theme linking to bedtime stories, I think that’s a brilliant idea!
