Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

Ah I think it's nice. It was the same at DSD's school this morning. She is year 6 so this is the last year for all the primary school fun before the seriousness of High School

YABU, I bet the kids love it and as a parent, I’d just be grateful he was there at all - most schools in my area are closed to most pupils due to teachers’ strike.

Same here with the strikes.

Also most schools round our way are not doing any fancy dress days (no Christmas jumper day either) because of cost of living rises and not wanting parents to feel pressured into forking out for a costume.

YABU OP, it's a bit of fun. In the nicest possible way, it sounds like you are looking at this through the lenses of neurodiversity and trauma.

@AutisticLegoLover
I understand your perspectives I guess as others said it's to fit in with the theme of the day

(Although I would question why pjs on world book day … what character is that supposed to be?! I have autism and that would annoy me more)!

We are doing a pj day at our early years centre as it puts less pressure on parents to find a costume, pay for a costume sometimes for more than one child.

we discussed how most children in our setting get read a bedtime story and asked them to bring in their favourite book and wear their pj’s.

Our school are going with the time of bedtime stories so asked children to wear pyjamas. Really it is a way to make sure everyone can take part without the additional worry and cost of buying a piece of tat fancy dress costume that will be worn once, especially in a cost of living crisis. The theme has been very well received at our school.

It's to promote the idea of a bedtime story. A concept that is sadly dying out. Lots of schools are doing this to keep costs down for parents.

YABU about the HT in pjs. I've worn mine to school. The kids love it, it shows that we are all doing something together and it works well.
I do go and buy pjs especially though. My usual bedtime attire is usually scruffy and holey.

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 02/03/2023 09:43

I think schools are trying to be mindful of not putting pressure (financial and otherwise) on families so pjs is a good option?

Guis · 02/03/2023 09:43

YANBU. Things taken too far. School should have fun days. It shouldn't have teachers dressed in nighties or pyjamas.

StripyHorse · 02/03/2023 09:44

Sustainability and cost issues aside (although PJs are MUCH better for both), I think the idea of snuggling down with PJs and a soft toy, listening to stories is a good way to encourage reading - creating a lovely memory of that time in school everyone wore PJs (even the teachers) and had story time. Sitting in an itchy nylon costume isn't quite the same.

On a separate note, on dressing up WBD I am a bit fan of ... Sophie from BFG, Tom from Tom's Midnight Garden, Arthur Dent, The Midnight Gang, Wendy from Peter Pan etc as costumes 😉

Ihatethenewlook · 02/03/2023 09:44

This is from our school. Can you honestly not see a connection between pyjamas and story time?

No character it's due to not putting pressure on parents to get kids costumes. Most children have PJ's so can take part.

SmallElephants · 02/03/2023 09:45

I’m certain they will have very carefully chosen the pjs. Probably only brought out once a year for world book day!!! I get the queasiness in relation to your own autism & past experiences but be reassured they probably aren’t ones the teachers actually sleep and relax in. I know I’d struggle to encroach on my coziness like that!
it’s different for kids they can wear their usual ones freshly washed no problem.

Our whole school is in PJ's. They could take their fav book, a blanket and teddy too.

ringofrosies · 02/03/2023 09:46

I think it’s a bit of fun for the kids and takes away from the pressure parents may feel to provide/produce fancy costumes. I’m just glad Teachers are actually IN school today……

Needmorelego · 02/03/2023 09:46

@Ivyy books with adults dressed in pyjamas...
Arthur Dent in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Scrooge in A Christmas Carol
That's all I can think of right now but there probably is more.

Perhaps Arthur Dent from Hitchiker's Guide?

StoppinBy · 02/03/2023 09:46

You sound very difficult.

Kids work far better with teachers they can relate with and your principal and teachers just showed they are a real part of the school team as opposed to Teachers V's Students.

You should be glad to have such lovely teachers.

feelinglikeanewparent · 02/03/2023 09:47

I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again.

You don't have to. He wore them for the kids, not you, and I've no doubt the kids would've loved seeing their teachers and HT dressed down for a day.

It's one day. Let it go.

That sounds lovely! Totally makes sense and wish dd's primary had done that (it was always a competition and prizes for most elaborate costume!) Hope all the kids have a great day :)

CinnamonsWake · 02/03/2023 09:50

It would make me cringe but appreciate that’s more my issue than him doing anything wrong.

Our school is in an area of deprivation so in order to reduce costs and pressure on families, its known as a bedtime stories day. Pjs or comfy clothes and your favourite bedtime story brought in to tell others about.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 02/03/2023 09:50

PurpleWisteria1 · 02/03/2023 09:40

I wouldn’t like it either OP. Even as part of a fancy dress. I used to be a primary teacher but would choose a different costume to PJ’s as I don’t feel it’s appropriate even as fancy dress. Dressing up in fancy dress fine but there are limits when you are in a professional role such as a HT.
Standards in stuff like this have gone down the pan though. Smartness generally in all walks of work dress have almost gone.
whilst I’m glad we are not in the suit and high heels for a primary teacher days anymore I still do think teachers should be smart especially the head - doesn’t have to be a suit but something smart and well presented.

It's world book day!! Ffs

Jooliusreezer · 02/03/2023 09:50

See, it would make me look on him fondly. He’s got totally involved in the theme that they’ve chosen, which is pyjamas, so that no child is humiliated or left out of WBD for financial reasons. That he was prepared to trundle around all day his in own pyjamas and dressing gown, would make me smile. It’s for the kids. And it has absolutely no impact on you at all, nor his ability to do his job.

I’m glad you can recognise it’s your issue.
