Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

SOME CHILDREN ARE EXCLUDED BECAUSE OF EXPENSE. THEY USE PJS TO PREVENT EXCLUSION AND HUMILIATION. THIS IS NOT UNCOMMON IN DEPRIVED AREAS SO THEY CAN STILL JOIN IN BUT NOT BE OTHERED BY THEIR FAMILY’S FINANCIAL SITUATION.

Surely you’re not really this ignorant?

Most people spend all 365 days making an effort for their kids, their spouses, their jobs, their homes, their pets, their mental wellbeing, their budget.

Schools who say "just wear pjs and bring bedtime stories" get this.

Not sewing a fucking costume from scratch or hoying £25 into the picket of Bezos to send their dc in with some fancy costume is not "not making an effort for their kids". It's being realistic and pragmatic about life.

YABU and gently, you need to get over yourself OP. It’s World book day. 🙄

Teachers can't win:

Don't dress up = boring, not getting into the spirit, 'upsets' children because they're not getting involved

Do dress up = unprofessional, not wearing appropriate clothing

I hate dressing up anyway and am so glad I quit my teaching job 5 years ago.

If fact (quoting my own post), I live being a 'quit teaching' statistic. Especially on days like today when reading the news.

My new job overwhelms me sometimes, but I don’t carry the emotional guilt and burden linked to my job that I used to.

🥳🥳Happy ex teacher dance 🥳🥳

I think it's great. The head teacher from my DD' s.school once walked around with a teddy as he was on the way to a teddy bear.picnic with the reception class. The kids loved it and it really warmed.me.to him that he is willing to do something ever so slightly embarrassing for the sake of the kids.

It’s one bloody day. Parents have had since last March to sort something, come on! Yes, it’s lazy! Very much so.

Bahahah, I see you are trying your best to be goady but unfortunately your not very good at it and it is very easy to see through you.

Better 100 lazy parents than 1 parent who pulls off an amazing costume every year but has an attitude like you. I know who I would rather be friends with.

Another two good careers lost to the profession.

There are widescale strikes and schools cannot hang onto teachers. This used to be a respected profession. There needs to be a serious consideration of what the hell has gone wrong.

Just to clarify it was not fancy dress. Just pjs or onesie. Fancy dress would be different.

Lots of books have characters in pyjamas. The children in Peter Pan, Tom in Tom's Midnight Garden, I'm Not Going to Get Up Today or on a sad note The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

So pyjamas for WBD seems fine.

It's world book day!! Ffs

And??? Some people go on about ‘world book day’ like it’s some once in a life time mega event that the world has to stop turning for. Put a silly hat on and get on with it. No one wants to see you strolling around in your night wear ffs.

Well of course I can see the connection, I'm autistic, not thick.

I've already concluded that I am unreasonable about it. Do people not read updated comments from the OP on threads?

Quite often I don't think they do, agree with others a pinned update or last comment from an op might be a v helpful feature on the site

Mine are adults now but as a working mum with a budget when mine were at school I would have loved a school being this pragmatic.

NKFell · 02/03/2023 10:12

My DCs school does this and they LOVE IT!

When I was at secondary school, two real RC nuns played the ugly sisters in a school production and at the end they pretended to be drunk and lifted up their skirts to reveal MASSIVE bloomers. Us kids found it hilarious and it made us love them more. It's the same sort of thing, a primary version 😂

The whole school is wearing nightware. I couldn't, and the vast majority of people don't give a shit!

ACynicalDad · 02/03/2023 10:13

I expect they would be wearing underwear too and being careful about the nightwear they choose. You aren't likely to see the reception teacher in a lace negligée or the caretaker with leopard print handcuffs attaching himself to the radiator.

Are you for real? I'm currently recovering from a fucking hip replacement, off meds that make me able to just about manage with life. So if you can kindly take your judgment and shove it up your arse? Thanks

ACynicalDad · 02/03/2023 10:15

One local school does something you might want to read in, can be anything, school uniform, casuals, onesie or even a costume. I think it's a very pragmatic solution.

If that’s the case then as a head teacher (or even primary teacher as I was) I either wouldn’t have chosen this theme or would have worn normal dress down clothes with a dressing gown over. Absolutely no way in hell would I be facing the outside world in PJ’s and even less so as a teacher. Would make me extremely uncomfortable.

TeenLifeMum · 02/03/2023 10:17

Stockings and suspenders dress up = issue

teacher in jogger and t shirt type pjs = non issue

Kids want teachers who engage them in learning not grey suited business managers ffs

Everyotherone · 02/03/2023 10:17

My autistic dc has a similar uncomfortable reaction to teachers dressing up - he enjoyed seeing the other kids’ costumes but adults joining in unsettled him in a way he couldn’t articulate and I found difficult to understand. It would subtly bother him for weeks afterwards

I really appreciate you sharing your pov.

It’s a relief to get to secondary and leave all the dress up, max hair, fancy socks days behind

That's you. The teachers at our school thankfully don't think that way

Sadly not, they enjoy piling in to make people feel shit. :-( I read your update.

PurpleWisteria1 · 02/03/2023 09:40

I wouldn’t like it either OP. Even as part of a fancy dress. I used to be a primary teacher but would choose a different costume to PJ’s as I don’t feel it’s appropriate even as fancy dress. Dressing up in fancy dress fine but there are limits when you are in a professional role such as a HT.
Standards in stuff like this have gone down the pan though. Smartness generally in all walks of work dress have almost gone.
whilst I’m glad we are not in the suit and high heels for a primary teacher days anymore I still do think teachers should be smart especially the head - doesn’t have to be a suit but something smart and well presented.

I expect the head teacher in question was really relieved to leave his high heels at home for the day.

Primary school teachers are a special breed though, and I mean that as a compliment.

There are lots of things they do daily that I'd feel really uncomfortable with. Imagine singing in front of a class when you're not a musician, for example. Leading a class in daft actions in a hall full of parents.

Sleepless1096 · 02/03/2023 10:22

I presume most will be wearing their 'costume' PJs. So tartans, stripes and florals, as opposed to boxers and a t-shirt. Together with appropriate leggings/vests underneath. So it wouldn't bother me at all. Most teachers will take care to come in something appropriate.
