Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

Because costumes are expensive and kids already own nightwear. It's less exclusionary.

Disagree, costumes can be made from own clothes and not every kid has PJs/nightwear.

I’m not comfortable with the slow change of World Book Day to be about kids coming in wearing PJs. Our school has asked us to take photos of our child at home reading in nightwear and send it to school to be put on their website. It’s creepy, especially in the context of the widespread erosion of safeguarding in schools.

YABU end of .

TheySeeMeRowling · 02/03/2023 22:04

Our school was on strike.
So no WBD.

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/03/2023 22:20

Yes, you are being unreasonable.

At no point before this do any of your updates say you have concluded you were being unreasonable. (In fact the opposite really.)

If you click on "see all" to see all of OP's post you could clearly see on her third comment she states
"It's ok IABU"
Maybe you should try that feature before commenting?

samsmum2 · 02/03/2023 22:20

I should say YABU but I'm a teacher and I also felt uncomfortable seeing our male HT in pyjamas all day. I bloody hate dressing up for those days anyway, but there's something especially 😬unpalatable about a fully grown (slightly fat & sweaty) man wearing PJs to work!

JudgeJ · 02/03/2023 22:23

(Although I would question why pjs on world book day … what character is that supposed to be?!

Surely all characters would have pj's or some nightwear, do you imagine that the Famous Five slept in their birthday suits?

Apologies, I did filter OPs but I missed that. Sarcasm was rather unnecessary though.

FrancescaContini · 02/03/2023 22:25

I’ve only read your posts, OP, but I’m with you all the way. Anyone in pjs especially teachers in a working environment is really weird. I’m not at all comfortable. It’s too intimate.

QuertyGirl · 02/03/2023 22:27

What is it about pjs that turns half of MN into Hyacinth Bucket?

Bet you all iron your knickers too

I know its crazy, it was 1 day.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/03/2023 22:29

And I work in my pjs.

Jmaho · 02/03/2023 22:30

My children's Head Teacher at primary really embraces World Book Day and any other dress up day.
He was stood outside the gates today in the most ridiculous huge blow up bear costume. The kids absolutely loved it and love him. I love his enthusiasm and the fact that he does it for the kids. I really don't understand what the problem is

bhiffandcip · 02/03/2023 22:33

My dd is a student teacher. She's hundreds of miles from home at uni.

She was told to come in her pjs as an alternative to a costume as she hasn't got one and can't afford one anyway.

Kids were given the option of costume or pjs and the head at her school said it would be good for the kids who hadn't a costume/didn't want to wear one/whose parents couldn't afford one to see a "teacher" in pjs as well.

I'm sorry it upset you though.

YABU 😊
They're just joining in and that's ok

momonpurpose · 02/03/2023 22:40

I think it's lovely. I'd actually be hmm if the staff didn't wear pajamas on pajamas day. It really pleases the kids seeing the grown-ups participation. I think OP try to remember it's for the kids

Buffs · 02/03/2023 22:51

YABU, it’s a bit of fun.

Fromwetome · 02/03/2023 23:01

You've already identified your autism makes this a problem you have rather than it being factual.

So yeah. YABU

Julimia · 02/03/2023 23:42

Yes you are being unreasonable. Dont have to be dressed in a suit to be professional.

Rosieposey91 · 02/03/2023 23:46

I don’t think I would find that uncomfortable or odd. It’s a good thing he is joining in. I think unfortunately it’s your trauma or autism causing your feelings, which are valid by the way and I hope some of the more kind responses on here have helped you realise that it’s not really that strange. However you feel what you feel and that’s also ok. X

Yes, this! Loosen up people, it's only a HT dressed up for WBD. It's not creepy, it's not unprofessional. Pj-s and dressing gowns are hardly offensive? Bet the kids loved seeing everyone including staff join in. YABU about this.

Blacksheepcat · 03/03/2023 01:07

You’re lucky your school was open to have world book day! Our world book day has been put back a day due to teachers strike today and school shut to most children.
I wouldn’t have a problem with PJ’s but it’s not really a book character (or very inventive for a head teacher).

Georgeandzippyzoo · 03/03/2023 01:09

My dh is a HT and he went to school in his pj's today. It was his costume for World Book Day. (It was actually a pj top and baggy joggers with a dressing gown over).
The kids were also in pjs, 'bedtime stories' and saving parents time and money on NOT buying a costume.
Parents and kids loved it.
