Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

Also a few yrs ago. our kids school primary HT came as the boy in the dress. Seeing a 6ft 2 man in a pretty blue shift dress surprised me, but it never affected how I viewed him as a professional. I thought it was great he could /would Wear that in school.

Lavender14 · 03/03/2023 01:31

We've done this in a former workplace before and I feel like it depends on the pyjammies a bit. Like anything revealing like hot pants - yes inappropriate for someone working with young people. But a onesie/ full length jammies with a dressing gown to me would be totally fine given its a very specific context and is done to serve a purpose.

DonnaB5859 · 03/03/2023 02:22

Children are often told: Get in your pyjamas and then I will read you a book before lights out.

I thought the teachers were very CLEVER to be wearing their pyjamas. Most children, I expect, only see the books come out at bedtime.

Imy06 · 03/03/2023 03:25

I'm a primary school teacher. We do pyjama days as an end of term celebration once a year. We dress up for book day. The kids love it when the teachers join in. And the kids are what I care about.

(Although I would question why pjs on world book day … what character is that supposed to be?! I have autism and that would annoy me more)!

Our school linked it as bed time stories are read in pjs

IAmTheWalrus85 · 03/03/2023 04:49

I think that’s lovely.

This thread’s made me feel a bit sorry for teachers. They can’t do right for doing wrong can they?!

Sunnysunbun · 03/03/2023 04:54

Oh my. Do you know any children? They love it when staff dress up. Get a grip. At my kids secondary school all the teachers dress up and none of the too cool kids - but they love it. The teachers always look amazing.
I can’t believe you’re so pompous.

YAB-more than-U. Massively so. Poor teacher to be judged (I know he doesn’t know you were judging him) for doing something to make things fun for the kids.

And there’re loads of characters in pyjamas. Michael and John from Peter Pan? Arthur from Hitchhikers Guide?

Tom's midnight garden.

The boy in the striped pyjamas.

Grandparents in Charlie and the chocolate factory.

I should say YABU but I'm a teacher and I also felt uncomfortable seeing our male HT in pyjamas all day. I bloody hate dressing up for those days anyway, but there's something especially 😬unpalatable about a fully grown (slightly fat & sweaty) man wearing PJs to work!

So fat men are unpalatable but the slim young guy is fine. God forbid someone is bigger than you agree with or sweats more than is acceptable to you.

Be against it for other reasons but your bias is showing here.

Threee · 03/03/2023 05:34

I think it’s fine as long as he was wearing clean semi new PJs and not sone dodgy holy old PJs he had worn the night before

MrsRickAstley · 03/03/2023 05:47

Yes you are.

I wore Pjs and a dressing gown ..plus a mask etc but that came off after assembly
I was Mrs Large....Five minutes Peace !!

Beezknees · 03/03/2023 06:47

YABU, I think it's nice. DS isn't at primary any more but I used to love seeing the teachers joining in.

Beezknees · 03/03/2023 06:50

And maybe the teachers don't have the spare money to make or buy other costumes! DS's school always did the option of a costume, OR pyjamas so that parents didn't have to spend extra money they might not have. Same with teachers.

Roughasabadgersbum · 03/03/2023 07:06

As a whole school the teaching staff went as the midnight gang characters in my children's school.
It was lovely to see the children's reactions and the staff made a great effort to be involved. The school I work in , we all went as Mr Men or little Miss characters. I'd much rather have been the midnight gang. Costumes are so expensive for both children and adults so why not wear what you already have. It's a day of fun and enjoyment and promoting books and reading .

CoffeeTeaCoffee · 03/03/2023 07:14

I agree with you completely! I'm wondering if your at the same school as me! I hated seeing the teachers in pjs yesterday and especially so the headteacher.
It's difficult to put into words but it really did feel too familiar/close.

Many schools do 'story at bedtime' for WBD, so everyone comes in pjs and they have a pretend bedtime with teachers reading stories, hot chocolate etc.

FrancescaContini · 03/03/2023 07:26

“Pretend bedtime” at school?
What?!
Really weird. Totally overstepping the mark.

Um, you do know that the boy in the striped pyjamas wasn’t actually wearing pyjamas? Confused

In our school that involves putting an image of a fire blazing on the projector screen and they all sit on beanbags reading a book with a cup of hot chocolate. Not sure how that’s ‘overstepping’, but the kids love it.

How is it overstepping and weird?

I really can't get my head round why pyjamas are heavy with some kind of implication for so many people on this thread. They're trousers and long sleeved tops. Possibly with a dressing gown over. There's as much coverage as with any winter clothing and more than with summer.

And recreating bedtime? Again, why are people's minds taking such an unhealthy turn?

WildRose42 · 03/03/2023 07:54

Another fun sucker

FrancescaContini · 03/03/2023 08:01

Because bedtime is what you do at home with your family, not with 100/200+ other children and adults in a public place.

It’s about boundaries, really.

And respect, too. I couldn’t see my children’s teachers the same way again after seeing them in their sleeping gear. The image upthread of the overweight middle aged HT in his pjs at the school gate - who really wants to see that?
Where’s his dignity?

londonrach · 03/03/2023 08:04

Yabu. It's world book day. It's not for you but the children...my DD school teachers were all dressed up too... That was the bit my DD loved the most.

toomuchlaundry · 03/03/2023 08:07

@FrancescaContini you do realise schools quite often do role play, especially in YR, where they will set up an area to represent a shop, vets, space etc. Do you have issues with that too?
