Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

So what did you wear?? I’m confused… I work with 2-4 year olds, nothing ruined

I have “work pjs” for stuff like this. I don’t want my silks covered in whiteboard marker. I also don’t think it’s appropriate for 11 year olds to see what I wore in bed last night.

C4ou56 · 02/03/2023 20:49

As someone who’s autistic I love it. I love how he hasn’t brought a limited wear costume and is making use of what he owns

GuyFawkesDay · 02/03/2023 20:49

OP you are being unreasonable here.

Your sensibilities don't outrank the bigger picture on this occasion.

BettySwallocks · 02/03/2023 20:53

I would be concerned if a little bit of winkie was poking out tho

Well obviously nobody is going to go in silk pyjamas ffs or wear what they wore last night 🙄I had fluffy polar bear pyjamas?! They are my real actual pyjamas….so were the pyjamas my colleagues wore?!

Hankunamatata · 02/03/2023 20:55

All teachers wore pj's. Kids loved it

MrWhippersnapper · 02/03/2023 20:56

As if you’re going to wear the same ones that you just slept in !

LikeTearsInRain · 02/03/2023 20:56

Could you make a formal complaint OP?

CakeJumper · 02/03/2023 20:59

So it’s ok for the female teachers to wear their jammies but not the males? How is that fair?

What is your problem? I’m telling you what all the teachers I know did in defence of the HT. Yet as a teacher yourself, you think, “oh profession in crisis, I’ll start an online tit for tat with another teacher.” What are you hoping to achieve here? Apart from justifying the dramatic reputation our profession has.

Toffeecat2019 · 02/03/2023 20:59

pjs and a dressing gown is fine. It’s more clothes than women who walk about in shorts and crop tops. Don’t see the issue! Teaches cannot win!!!!!!!!!!

I was genuinely confused, go put your feet up love and calm down 🙄

Misslings · 02/03/2023 21:00

@Puppers

Oh I understood it alright. Actually embarassing to people who do have autism.

Enough said.

StopGrowingPlease · 02/03/2023 21:03

I think it’s fine if everyone was wearing pjs and I assume all the teachers were too? I’ve actually started taking pjs swimming to wear after like the kids do 🤷‍♀️😂

Merangutan · 02/03/2023 21:04

I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

MatronicO6 · 02/03/2023 21:05

Classic example of how teachers cannot win, someone will always have a problem with whatever they do.
World book day doesn't have to be 'fancy dress' it's about dressing as a book character. The Midnight Gang is a pretty common one to do as it doesn't involve extra cost or too much effort for teachers, who already spend a lot of time and their own money for class resources. It also shows kids they don't have to spend money to take part.
But more importantly, they don't do it for the parents, it's for the kids, who love it!

Supergirl1958 · 02/03/2023 21:10

If there was a vote, YABU I’ve worn my PJs in the past! Today I wore my favourite teams football shirt as it linked with our theme!

Murdoch1949 · 02/03/2023 21:10

Decades ago, first Comic Relief, my whole Sixth Form, and staff, wore pyjamas for the day. It raised money, we had fun, and no-one died. Ease up on the grumpiness, if HT had worn his suit he'd have been a downer on the day.

Dottymug · 02/03/2023 21:12

I suppose that even if some parents do feel pressurised to buy new pjs for their child at least the pjs are useful, practical garments. Unlike the ASDA David Walliams type costumes which cost as much and are only any use for WBD. Teachers are trying their best to make things fun for the children while not making life more difficult for parents who are short of both time and money -parents who are the very opposite of lazy.

YANBU

i hate things like pyjama days. Pyjamas as outerwear looks slovenly.

It's dress up day though. So what difference does it make wheather it's PJ'S or a spider man alfit? You wouldn't wear either out in public on a normal day.

I would of preffered a PJ day all round for the kids. I wasted money ordering my child a costume and then he moaned he didn't want to wear it in the end!

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 02/03/2023 21:33

Bedtime stories are a big party of helping children fall in love with reading, I think PJ's are a better way to bring reading into the conversation than fancy dress is for that reason. Our school did, own clothes, or pj's or costume character, your choice... Perfect. Teachers were in PJ's everyone loved it and no stress for parents.

Littlepicker · 02/03/2023 21:34

Errrrm…. I think you might need some kind of therapy

T1Dmama · 02/03/2023 21:34

You’ve stated it was PJ’s or onesies today… with that in mind I think PJ’s were reasonable!… I reckon a onesie would’ve been hilarious 😂
