Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

YABU.
Would you say the same on Pudsey day when people wear pyjamas to raise awareness? Or would you have come to mumsnet with a “Head Teacher appears to not support children in need”

aslong as he was actually in pyjamas and not in boxer shorts then who cares?

Cleanthatup · 02/03/2023 14:14

Oh gosh well, this has taken a turn I didn’t expect from this morning. as I said earlier my kids went in their fresh PJs this morning as “The Midnight Gang”. What I hadn’t considered is that some people would think of our parenting as lazy or that we could afford a costume because of it!

Since Christmas we have had;
wild colour day
egyptian day
non uniform day
Green only day
not only did we have to purchase new clothing or costumes but we had to donate £5 per child to the school.

So tbh when the kids said they were happy going as the book character they are currently reading I was delighted. Especially as I buried my mother on Tuesday & had other things on my mind god forbid I didn’t put the effort into one day at primary school for god sake!

Offensiveapprently · 02/03/2023 14:15

Oh dear Lord really?

GrowingBoy · 02/03/2023 11:16

Just to tip the balance as I agree with you! I already hate pyjama day for the kids, let alone grown ups wearing pyjamas! Gives me the ick massively. I don't want to see what you wear in bed, thank you. I know it's meant to be a bit of fun and I'm really not usually grumpy, but i can't get on board with this. It also feels dirty and unhygienic to me, kids coming to school in their PJ'S. I know they're most likely clean pyjamas, but I bet in some cases they aren't.

Also hate when colleagues work from home and I can see their bed in the background on video calls. I'm horrified on their behalf.

😂

I think I work with you.

Inastatus · 02/03/2023 14:27

@GrowingBoy - why do you think pj’s are ‘dirty and unhygienic’?

Tessabelle74 · 02/03/2023 17:40

YABU but I can understand why. Personally I love it when our headteacher does daft stuff like this

niugboo · 02/03/2023 17:42

AutisticLegoLover · 02/03/2023 09:56

Well of course I can see the connection, I'm autistic, not thick.

I've already concluded that I am unreasonable about it. Do people not read updated comments from the OP on threads?

As an autistic person you should know why ableist slurs are not ok.

Doggate1 · 02/03/2023 17:49

Is this even a real post ????

Mummy2mybear · 02/03/2023 17:49

YABU Its a bit of fun make the kids happy its no big deal

Chunkythighss · 02/03/2023 17:49

we had pj day at school last week; all staff members came in onsies / pjs / dressing gowns etc. obviously nothing unsuitable but it’s fun to join in with the kids and also let’s them know is ‘safe’ and ok to let your true self show through (even more than we would usually encourage). Only 1 child in my class out of 30 didn’t wear pjs and he is ASD. He actually stood out more without them, however I respected his decision to chose what made him feel comfortable.

Arrocahar23 · 02/03/2023 17:50

I can’t believe someone would judge the headteacher, or anyone else, for being a good sport and taking full part in the *dress down day!! Really?

I think I’d take more issue with the term “PJs”…!

CMZ2018 · 02/03/2023 17:50

Probably think they’re on strike and got up late the bone idle clowns

ilovechocolate07 · 02/03/2023 17:51

The children enjoy it and there's a sense of community in it. I much prefer the PJ dress up both as a patent and school staff as nobody has to go out and buy anything new, just dress as you would fir bedtime stories.

cherish123 · 02/03/2023 17:51

YANBU
I am a teacher and wouldn't dress like this.

FreddieMercurysCat · 02/03/2023 17:53

Are you being unreasonable? Yes. Very.

sheep73 · 02/03/2023 17:54

no I agree with OP. I don't want to see adults in their PJs thankyou.

MrWhippersnapper · 02/03/2023 17:55

At no point before this do any of your updates say you have concluded you were being unreasonable. (In fact the opposite really.)

Luckyduc · 02/03/2023 17:56

I work in a school, and we will do everything for kids including dressing up for world book day and any other theme including pyjama day. We do all kinds of silly things and get involved.
Have you never seen the head master of your school sit in a bath tub of baked beans or do silly things to raise money? Maybe you should send your kid to a private school that suits you, but it's very normal in most schools.

Bib1234 · 02/03/2023 17:57

Get over yourself 😂

Snorklette · 02/03/2023 17:58

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2023 09:14

Because costumes are expensive and kids already own nightwear. It's less exclusionary.

Yes. This.

I'm surprised it took this long to start the autism diagnosis bashing.

People are not 'autism diagnosis bashing'. Your own post immediately prior to this one states 'people with ASD...' before you go on to effectively say that you are not being unreasonable (despite all of the posts to the contrary) because of your own autism/ ASD and seemingly seeking to justify or explain your response because of that. People are simply replying to your own reasoning/ argument.

AutisticLegoLover · 02/03/2023 18:04

The autism diagnosis bashing post was deleted.

We do bedtime stories for world book day…..so pjs and bring your favourite bedtime story. We go for something that hopefully doesn’t cost parents any extra.
I understand your ASD means this is difficult to understand, but it’s about school staff being part of the fun.

Loics · 02/03/2023 18:05

You are being unreasonable. You haven't acknowledged that either, as you say you have, just picked a fight with some people who disagree with you.

I'm autistic too, so I don't get accused of bashing you for it.
