I'm a childminder and today was quick tea day for mindees aged 2 - 6. Had a frozen Goodfellas pizza from Asda. Was cutting it up for the little ones and being greedy I ate a few pieces too. Good job I did. It immediately tasted weird and chemical like. I ate 3 mouthfuls in total then my throat and tongue started burning. Not horrendous but not pleasant! I've still got a sore throat now. I've obviously not served it and will contact Asda but suspect they'll just refund. I've had to give the poor kids a lesser meal and what if i hadn't have eaten it? Definitely hasn't come from my oven or worktop.

I agree with you @EmmaDilemma5 fwiw

food is a massive part of caring for children. I have a two year old and can honestly say frozen pizza hasn’t yet happened. I’m sure it will but I’m in no hurry to bring that day forwards.

When I had only one child, that one child was far too precious for nasty frozen pizza. Then I had more children.

Relatable!

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 01/03/2023 18:49

Jesus. Most of the time our childminder served healthy home made food, often with the kids helping her to prep.

And then some days they had frozen pizza and salad. And even, shock horrid, McDonalds on a Friday if it was a just a few of them, for a treat!

What is the world coming to…

Agree with this totally! The outrage over a bloody frozen pizza. My fantastic Ofsted rated "outstanding" childminder served my toddler the odd frozen pizza too, oh the shock!! Funnily enough my toddler survived the ordeal. It's not as if it's every day fgs.

Timeflieswhenyourehavingfun · 01/03/2023 20:20

These threads always get derailed by sanctimonious twats.

OP, sounds like an allergic reaction. Something very similar happened to me with a Milanos pizza , my mouth broke out in blisters also.
I hope the reaction passes and you get to the bottom of it.

ghostyslovesheets · 01/03/2023 20:21

Wait till some posters encounter school dinners! The outrage will be heard in space

Moveoverdarlin · 01/03/2023 20:21

It could be an allergic reaction, years ago I used a tomato sauce in pasta and I reacted badly, mouth on fire, lips swelled up and it had paprika in it which was the cause. And FWIW I also think it’s bone idle for a childminder to serve a frozen pizza.

NCagain23 · 01/03/2023 20:24

Moveoverdarlin · 01/03/2023 20:04

A lesser meal than a frozen Goodfellas pizza, blimey what was that?

A sandwich? Beans on toast? 🙄

pinkstripeycat · 01/03/2023 20:24

Don’t just take it back to store. Complain to main customer service to get a better outcome and ensure they look in to why it happened as it may have affected a batch of pizzas

iklboo · 01/03/2023 20:12

OP obviously isn't coming back since the thread has been utterly derailed by the horror of her daring to cook a frozen pizza for her mindees.

For all we know it could have been a 'tide over' snack and the children would be eating later with their parents, especially as she said it was 'quick tea night'. The parents might be in full knowledge & agreement of an occasional pizza. It doesn't say it's a daily or even weekly occurrence.

But, no, let's castigate her and completely lose sight of what the thread is really about - OP seeking advice on what she should do about the reaction she experienced and being relieved at the near miss.

I agree. Fucking ridiculous. Peak Mumsnet.

RedRiverShore3 · 01/03/2023 20:25

It does sound like an allergic reaction, especially as OP mentioned tingling afterwards.

Usual MN outrage about frozen food, to be expected on here really

Barannca · 01/03/2023 20:29

That's around £20/hr earnings. Loads of people WFH earning less.
Of course it isn't £20 an hour!. A CM has additional costs. She has to buy toys, crafts, equipment,.food, snacks, drinks, insurance, pay for training courses, wear and tear on the home, heating, electricity, safety equipment for the house and garden some. Also pay for , entrance fees to outdoor activities , . If you add all that up it is considerably less than £20 am hour. Many childminders work for less than the minimum wage.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 01/03/2023 20:33

Blimey OP, I'm sure you regret posting now.

I think it's fine (the pizza tea, not the poisoning). Maybe you had a busy day out, hell maybe you have a new mindee who spent the day clinging to your leg and crying on you. I couldn't get worked up about this. And yy to "Wait until school dinners".

ireallycantthinkofaname · 01/03/2023 20:35

I hope OP is ok - in the sense of hasn't had a serious reaction (either allergic or to whatever was wrong with the pizza) - and just hasnt come back because its derailed totally

Kic · 01/03/2023 20:36

Especially because who serves JUST a frozen pizza, normally its at least served with chips etc so it really isnt cheaper.

And risk incurring the wrath of MN for the crime of having <gasp> double carbs! 😮

Lcb123 · 01/03/2023 20:38

I wouldn’t be pleased if my childminder served frozen pizza - I hope your clients are aware

Not the point but lesser than a frozen pizza?

Glad it’s not just me 😄 I wouldn’t be best pleased with that in the first place tbh.

Strawberrysosweet · 01/03/2023 20:46

The thing is that every time there’s a nursery vs childminder thread on here a lot of CMs get very defensive and say that they are professionals, have to adhere to EY standards etc. which is true.

Frozen pizza isn’t part of that. I’m not anti quick, easy and cheap. Scrambled egg, omelette, beans on toast, Welsh rarebit, fish fingers, fine, frozen pizza, no, not really.

You might want to check out the ingredients in a can of baked beans!!!!

Strawberrysosweet · 01/03/2023 20:49

Admittedly I haven’t, so what hidden nasties lurk in baked beans and what unknown nutrition hides in a frozen pizza?

tomfromloveislandsbeard · 01/03/2023 20:52

This thread is hilarious.

I gave my kids frozen pizzas for tea this eve. With nothing on the side except more pizza. In front of the telly. And I wasn't even working today, I was just knackered (because life) and couldn't be bothered cooking. I cooked a meat and two veg meal yesterday and probably will tomorrow.

Yeah fine, me too, but if you’re paying someone to feed your kid you’d hope for better than an Asda pizza surely?

Strawberrysosweet · 01/03/2023 20:54

Yes but @tomfromloveislandsbeard thats your choice, as parent.

There are supposed to be higher standards for childcare settings.

TropicalSun72 · 01/03/2023 20:57

The lesser meal as in less amount! I'm not suggesting the pizza is the best or most nutritional one I serve. It definitely isn't but is fine occasionally with salad/veg sticks. Not that it's got anything to do with my thread.

This is going to end up in the Daily Fail.

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 01/03/2023 20:59

I’m curious as to what meal might be “lesser” than a frozen pizza?
