I'm a childminder and today was quick tea day for mindees aged 2 - 6. Had a frozen Goodfellas pizza from Asda. Was cutting it up for the little ones and being greedy I ate a few pieces too. Good job I did. It immediately tasted weird and chemical like. I ate 3 mouthfuls in total then my throat and tongue started burning. Not horrendous but not pleasant! I've still got a sore throat now. I've obviously not served it and will contact Asda but suspect they'll just refund. I've had to give the poor kids a lesser meal and what if i hadn't have eaten it? Definitely hasn't come from my oven or worktop.

With all of the outrage you all missed a very important point. She was posting on Mumsnet before 5pm. DO YOU GET PAID TO USE MUMSNET OP?! IS THAT DETAILED IN YOUR CONTRACT?!

And that she bought the pizza from the den of iniquity that is Asda

Forgottenpeeves · 01/03/2023 19:07

Seriously?! Poor op. My childminder is excellent and also busy taking my kids to soft play and the park etc. Perfectly happy for the occasional frozen pizza.

Nocutenamesleft · 01/03/2023 19:11

Why have you gone immediately to poisoning?!?!

allergic reaction. Out of date. But poisoning???

GrinAndVomit · 01/03/2023 19:04

The meat alone costs me more than that

Me too!

£195 a day isn't making profit?! What world are you living in!

That's around £20/hr earnings. Loads of people WFH earning less.

And good meals don't have to cost more. The average frozen pizza is what, around £2.50?

It's nothing to do with being snobby or cost.

It's about people doing a good job. Part of a childminders role is providing good nutritious meals for children, so they should do that. Not cop out with a crappy pizza once a week.

At least a third of my earnings goes on expenses, often more than that. There’s also the ‘behind the scenes’ work that goes on that I don’t get paid for. Add that to all the training courses, again that happen whilst I’m not working and not getting paid. My ‘earnings’ really aren’t all that great and let’s not forget the tax that comes off!

grumpycow1 · 01/03/2023 19:13

I have to agree about the frozen pizza being the lesser meal here. The fact you didn’t think that is concerning!!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 01/03/2023 19:20

To get back to the OP for a minute, I get that reaction if I eat chilli. You said you were cutting it up. Might there have been something on the knife?

MrMarkham · 01/03/2023 19:20

Would not give a shit if the child minder served frozen pizza. God knows what my nursery serve but it sounds vile from the description, at least they would eat pizza!

Strawberrysosweet · 01/03/2023 19:27

I agree with you @EmmaDilemma5 fwiw

food is a massive part of caring for children. I have a two year old and can honestly say frozen pizza hasn’t yet happened. I’m sure it will but I’m in no hurry to bring that day forwards.

There's a lot of posters with low expectations of childcare.

We pay some of the highest rates for childcare. My childminder regularly has 3 toddlers, that's £65x3 she earns a day. £195! And people are happy that she shoves a cheap, nutritionally poor dinner in for the kids? And when she can't serve that, she hasn't got a good back up?

No frozen jackets. No pasta. Nothing better than a single frozen pizza?

That's crap.

In any other profession, you expect good service every single day. OP - raise your standards.

On what scale is £65 a day one of the highest rates for childcare?

JennyDarlingRIP · 01/03/2023 19:32

To be honest people have the choice between nurseries and child minders. Nurseries have economy of scale for things like food. DS' serves simple but home cooked food, I wouldn't be happy with frozen pizza but I pay them a lot more than I'd pay a childminder and they employ a cook. People choose childminders often because they are cheaper, which is fine but then you can't expect fresh meals every day

I would be absolutely livid if I found out our childminder was serving our children a frozen pizza.

I’d expect them to at least cook it first.

I meant, the UK costs for childcare are some of the highest in the world.

I don't feel sorry for childminders, nor do I want to patronise them, to say that a frozen pizza is a good job. It's not, a good childminder provides good quality food for their children.

BazingaBaby · 01/03/2023 19:49

I think some people are massively underestimating childminders here. It's not as simple as 'providing a balanced meal' 3x daily, its doing that in your own home with several children to care for at the same time, making sure all paperwork is correct and all procedures are followed and checked. How many of you who are critiquing this woman could actually provide what you claim to be simple expectations for roughly £9per hour?

EmmaDilemma5 · 01/03/2023 19:50

FuchsAndMöhr · 01/03/2023 18:47

Oh fuck off with your £195. With this statement alone you have NO IDEA about a CM, their income and their expenses!

You are exactly the type of parent that CM’s dread!!

Luckily I don't have to raise any issues with my childminder. She provides a great service with excellent food options.

I pay on the same day she invoices and we are both flexible when necessary.

So actually... I'm probably her dream client.

If she served frozen pizza 20% of the dinners, she wouldn't me kind of childminder.

Moveoverdarlin · 01/03/2023 20:04

A lesser meal than a frozen Goodfellas pizza, blimey what was that?

KievsOutTheOven · 01/03/2023 20:06

Anoisagusaris · 01/03/2023 18:48

Frozen pizza for an 8 year old as a once off…fine. But not for a 2 year old. I’m Plenty of easy quick meals you could make instead.

My baby has been scoffing down frozen pizzas since 6 months old and he’s yet to implode. It’s fine.

HonestFeedback · 01/03/2023 20:07

OP I think it's more likely you are having an allergic reaction to the food that could be serious.

Tekkentime · 01/03/2023 20:10

I can't take comments seriously on this thread 😂

iklboo · 01/03/2023 20:12

OP obviously isn't coming back since the thread has been utterly derailed by the horror of her daring to cook a frozen pizza for her mindees.

For all we know it could have been a 'tide over' snack and the children would be eating later with their parents, especially as she said it was 'quick tea night'. The parents might be in full knowledge & agreement of an occasional pizza. It doesn't say it's a daily or even weekly occurrence.

But, no, let's castigate her and completely lose sight of what the thread is really about - OP seeking advice on what she should do about the reaction she experienced and being relieved at the near miss.

AllOfThemWitches · 01/03/2023 20:15

Don't worry though, they're just being 'honest' and that's ok because mumsnet is 'robust,' not like other sites. Nothing toxic about it, oh no.
