I'm a childminder and today was quick tea day for mindees aged 2 - 6. Had a frozen Goodfellas pizza from Asda. Was cutting it up for the little ones and being greedy I ate a few pieces too. Good job I did. It immediately tasted weird and chemical like. I ate 3 mouthfuls in total then my throat and tongue started burning. Not horrendous but not pleasant! I've still got a sore throat now. I've obviously not served it and will contact Asda but suspect they'll just refund. I've had to give the poor kids a lesser meal and what if i hadn't have eaten it? Definitely hasn't come from my oven or worktop.

And what the food would typically look like.

Would anyone be so kind to share what they feed their kids during an average week? Esp when they're home all day e.g. during holidays or for those working full time where there's only time to cook from scratch e.g. once/day at most

If the issue is that it's processed then the same issue would apply to lots of other things e.g.

  • frozen chips
  • fish fingers
  • battered cod/fish
  • chicken nuggets
  • sausages
and even tinned things e.g baked beans, spaghetti hoops etc. or pasta sauces

There's another thread about Rice Krispies and fruit for breakfast...similar level of outrage

Be useful to share some ideas that don't include any of the above processed options....

@Sweetapplestrudel if it’s because no time then make your own meatballs, mini lasagna, spaghetti bolognese, chili con carne etc and freeze in portions. You can even freeze mashed potatoes. Serve with fresh veg.

All the stuff made with mince beef sounds less healthy than a piece of frozen fish in batter or fish fingers. Mince beef isn't the best choice

@Sweetapplestrudel I wouldn’t aim to feed my children processed food more than once a week to be honest.
Breakfast is usually porridge, pancakes or eggs on toast
Lunches are usually soup, couscous, sandwiches etc with fruit, veggie sticks, rice cakes, cheese
dinners include chicken mostly (curry, fajita, pasta, risotto) but they’ll eat fish and prawns in things like paella, fish curry, salmon. We don’t really eat red meat either but have about half meals veggie (teriyaki tofu, 5 bean chilli, stirfry, nasi goreng, halloumi tray bake)

I don’t really take longer than half an hour to make dinner but it’s doable to not eat processed food every night
