Just nearly poisoned the kids! Wwyd?

I'm a childminder and today was quick tea day for mindees aged 2 - 6. Had a frozen Goodfellas pizza from Asda. Was cutting it up for the little ones and being greedy I ate a few pieces too. Good job I did. It immediately tasted weird and chemical like. I ate 3 mouthfuls in total then my throat and tongue started burning. Not horrendous but not pleasant! I've still got a sore throat now. I've obviously not served it and will contact Asda but suspect they'll just refund. I've had to give the poor kids a lesser meal and what if i hadn't have eaten it? Definitely hasn't come from my oven or worktop.

@TropicalSun72

did you report to environmental health?

what is happening?

MidnightEagle · 03/03/2023 10:16

Any update in this OP? Did Asda/good fellas take any action?
Also whenever I looked at childminders in my area, none you them did meals, you had to send a packed lunch with them.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 01/03/2023 18:07

Silly question, but you didn't by any chance leave the base on (packaging) when you heated it up?

I've done that in the past but most pizzas don't come with a base now.

Forgooodnesssakenow · 04/03/2023 05:21

ReneBumsWombats · 02/03/2023 09:08

Pizza actually contains all three main food groups for a meal: carbs in the base, veg in the sauce and protein in the cheese. You can certainly improve it by adding some veg on the side as well, which OP said she does.

In terms of whatever additions there are in processed food, I don't see why it's so much worse than fish fingers.

Some pizza this is true, a Goodfellows pizza contains no significant veg and the base is practically a cracker.

A decent pizza, whole different story.

thaegumathteth · 02/03/2023 09:59

Guess what? I've never used childcare. Why does anyone need to use childcare? I don't so can't understand why anyone does. Highest rates paid or not. Abhorrent.

Ummm what?

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 02/03/2023 09:29

Pizza isn’t processed crap. It’s bread, tomato sauce and cheese FFS.

Not all pizza is processed crap, Goodfellows pizza is

Eastie77Returns · 04/03/2023 05:42

It is not an over reaction or pearl clutching to criticise the meal choice. An Asda frozen pizza is a nutritionally poor choice. I’m not sure why people are pretending it’s not. The OP’s clients may not be concerned that their children are being fed this kind of food, in which case it’s fine. Personally I wouldn’t choose a CM who did this.

Tomato sauce has loads of salt and sugar. I only give this to my DC very rarely. In moderation frozen pizza is fine (although fresh would be better as I assume it will also have preservatives), but definitely not a weekly meal

Raindancer411 · 04/03/2023 06:02

@TropicalSun72 What happened with reporting the pizza?

Finally? 🤣🤣

Actually the pearl clutching sanctimonious twats appeared on page 1!

Are you on the right thread 🤷🏼‍♀️

Such a weird comment. Hardly pearl clutching to want your kids to eat nutritious food. No wonder kids now have so many issues with allergies etc I'm sure being fed crap, processed food has a lot to do with it

iklboo · 04/03/2023 15:16

Well it is after almost three days since the OP and nearly every other poster has made exactly the same point. And especially not reading the updates.

This is 'cancel the cheque' for 2023.

The allergist has entered the building guys!

Frozen pizzas do not cause allergies ffs. My daughter was born with an allergy.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/03/2023 16:33

I'm sure I'd know if frozen pizzas caused allergies. My generation is accused of inventing them.

Allergies or pizzas?! Unless you're about 110, I doubt either could be true.

Allergies. When I was a kid, I heard a lot about how we had invented them. We invented ADHD too.

I'm 38. A millennial, albeit an older one. Everything's our fault.

And autism and dyslexia.

You forgot autism and dyslexia.

I don't think we invented dyslexia, but we totally made up how common it is. And we didn't invented autism entirely, just any kind that isn't non verbal alongside prodigious drawing talent.

Where I live childcare is £70 a month and it includes homecooked breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks like fruit, youghurt & sandwiches. The food is great. People still complain it’s too expensive.

BendingSpoons · 08/04/2023 07:28

I saw this thread pop up again. There is a lot of hatred for pizza. I'm genuinely interested in what your children eat at school. A typical week of school dinners for my DD will be:
Mon - pizza (albeit a more boring version)
Tue - BBQ chicken or chicken pasta
Wed - jacket potato (she doesn't like the roast)
Thu - hot dog or chicken nuggets
Fri - fish fingers
Followed by dessert. Only the Tue and Wed options change and it's all fairly similar. It's not great but they eat it!

I can understand if your childminder is doing after school care, you don't want them earing similar stuff twice. But there is a lot of outrage about it not being home cooked, when IME schools aren't doing much different! Maybe your schools are just offering a much more varied menu though.

Strawberrysosweet · 08/04/2023 07:51

I don’t pay £60 a day for school.

No it's funded by the government, which in 12 months time is what will happen in the childcare sector. Parents aren't suddenly going to care less about what their children are fed so this is a huge reason why we should make sure our schools and childcare are funded properly. I don't understand your reasoning that children should be fed better just because it's coming direct from.your pocket! It doesn't mean there's any more room in the budget for better quality food, this problem absolutely will only get worse.

This is what a week can look like. Served for free until you’re 18, and teachers eat for free where I am. There is always a huge very fresh salad bar and hard bread with butter.

Kebab casserole with rice
Veggie kebab casserole with rice

Breaded fish with mashed potatoes cold chive sauce
Stuffed bell peppers with mashed potatoes and cold chive sauce

Easter lunch (meatballs, potatoes, ham, eggs etc)

Spaghetti bolognese
Veggie spaghetti bolognese

Spinach soup with eggs, pancakes

endoftheworldniteclub · 08/04/2023 09:50

This is what the salad bar would look like.
