I'm a childminder and today was quick tea day for mindees aged 2 - 6. Had a frozen Goodfellas pizza from Asda. Was cutting it up for the little ones and being greedy I ate a few pieces too. Good job I did. It immediately tasted weird and chemical like. I ate 3 mouthfuls in total then my throat and tongue started burning. Not horrendous but not pleasant! I've still got a sore throat now. I've obviously not served it and will contact Asda but suspect they'll just refund. I've had to give the poor kids a lesser meal and what if i hadn't have eaten it? Definitely hasn't come from my oven or worktop.

Oh fuck off with your £195. With this statement alone you have NO IDEA about a CM, their income and their expenses!

You are exactly the type of parent that CM’s dread!!

I’m horrified you have a childminder, can’t you look after and give your children nutritious meals yourself! Disgraceful 😉

This is the most MN thing ever.
OP: "Omg I nearly poisoned my charges with unknown chemicals".
MN "Frozen supermarket pizza?! That's the real poison!!!"

Dolphinsinwellies · 01/03/2023 18:54

Have you recently cleaned your oven/racks? Sounds exactly the reaction you get from the active ingredient in oven/grill cleaner. The effects of the cleaner is exacerbated by water so if it's not rinsed/burnt off it could be fine for a while then seep when it comes into direct contact with a wet food or steam/condensation etc and drops onto food.

Also 😂at the posters who genuinely think beans and cheese on toast (i.e. a bit of tomato, heap of sugar, heap of salt, a pulse, and cheese, atop a piece of bread) is any better than pizza...i.e. a bit of tomato, salt, sugar, and cheese, on top of bread.

You should definitely feed your kids yourself 😄

What a weird comment, @Dominoeffecter

You forgot "we pay the highest rates for childcare".

PatientlyWaiting21 · 01/03/2023 18:58

Do the parents know this is what you class as an easy meal? I would not be okay with this.

EmmaDilemma5 · 01/03/2023 18:59

ghostyslovesheets · 01/03/2023 18:39

that's £65x3 she earns a day. £195! you are so right - childminding should not be for profit - no one should make any money from the job they should do it for free and spend every penny on food

Or after insurance, heating, water, petrol, food, activities, play equipment, training, there should be enough left to pay a childminder a decent living wage

or hire a fucking nanny and pay for that - supplying everything yourself

£195 a day isn't making profit?! What world are you living in!

That's around £20/hr earnings. Loads of people WFH earning less.

And good meals don't have to cost more. The average frozen pizza is what, around £2.50?

It's nothing to do with being snobby or cost.

It's about people doing a good job. Part of a childminders role is providing good nutritious meals for children, so they should do that. Not cop out with a crappy pizza once a week.

GrinAndVomit · 01/03/2023 19:00

Naan bread, homemade pizzas are the absolute pits.

Either give them the real thing or don’t bother.

Fromwetome · 01/03/2023 18:26

OP next time don't tell the witches of Mumsnet that you served the children a cheese and tomato pizza, if you want sympathy and advice you should have served the children a home made full roast dinner with locally sourced organic meat and vegetables.

They are "veggies", not "vegetables", thank you very much.

Thoughtful2355 · 01/03/2023 19:00

sorry but im agreeing i wouldnt expect to pay for a childminder and have my kids fed frozen pizza.. id expect potaoes or pasta or rice dishes even if no veggies, stuff like spaghetti bolegnese or curries or jacket potatoes, even fish fingers and chips id expect more.

BernadetteIsMySister · 01/03/2023 19:00

EmmaDilemma5 · 01/03/2023 18:36

There's a lot of posters with low expectations of childcare.

We pay some of the highest rates for childcare. My childminder regularly has 3 toddlers, that's £65x3 she earns a day. £195! And people are happy that she shoves a cheap, nutritionally poor dinner in for the kids? And when she can't serve that, she hasn't got a good back up?

No frozen jackets. No pasta. Nothing better than a single frozen pizza?

That's crap.

In any other profession, you expect good service every single day. OP - raise your standards.

No she doesn't earn £195 per day 🙄

MargaretThursday · 01/03/2023 19:01

Can't have been too revolting if you ate 3 pieces before stopping.

Thoughtful2355 · 01/03/2023 19:02

also for price factor, i make spaghetti bolegnese say for 4 people and it costs me £4.50 with some leftover for the next day in which case the next day you do bolegnese over jacket potatoes ( asda do bag of potatoes for 2 thatll last a few days .

Especially because who serves JUST a frozen pizza, normally its at least served with chips etc so it really isnt cheaper.

Dominoeffecter · 01/03/2023 19:03

There could be a number of reasons they were going to be given frozen pizza, even fake ones.

The meat alone costs me more than that

Pizza and chips. I like them both, but why would anyone ever have them together? Unless chips are counted as a "veggie".

GoodChat · 01/03/2023 19:05

With all of the outrage you all missed a very important point. She was posting on Mumsnet before 5pm. DO YOU GET PAID TO USE MUMSNET OP?! IS THAT DETAILED IN YOUR CONTRACT?!

It's not £20 per hour if she is batch cooking on a Sunday, because they are working hours - including the top up batch cook in the week, plus ingredients, plus gas/electric to cook the food. Your childminders earnings will come after all of things have been paid for by her.

She will also need to pay for insurances, activities for the children, gas/electric/water she uses whilst caring for the children, and I am probably missing out a.gpod.few overheads. Your childminder is making nowhere near £20 per hour.
