Sanitary pad ads on tv

Firstly - if it's been posted before, I apologise, as there's always one snippy person who will point it out to me.. (rolls eyes)
I just think they are horrible.. bad enough in the past, but now, we have to have splashes of blood on them? REALLY? Is it just me?

Actually, the NHS ads too.. why are they (presumably) spending millions advertising? (The latest one is the guy going to do his poo test.) These tests are sent out to - I think - over 60's in England anyway. Younger in Scotland, as I recall. Surely anyone younger knows by now, blood in poo, (try and) make a GP appointment?

Maybe it's just me being grumpy.. ? Every time I see either advert, I get the rage!

It's over 60s both DH and I got one for our 60th birthday 😁

Since April 2021, it was expanded to cover people in their 50s too 😁

It’s the NHS advert ‘if something doesn’t feel right in your body then see your GP’ that maddens me. Every time it’s on I shout at the telly ‘yes and get told to just take a couple of paracetamol and you will be fine’.

Yes exactly this!

Jooliusreezer · 28/02/2023 17:56

There was, rightly, a campaign to remove the ludicrous blue fluid poured into pads on ads, because there is no shame in menstruating, so why hide it with some blue water instead of the actual colour it is? It would have been devised by squeamish pathetic men in advertising and frankly, we’ve moved on.

How you can be offended by an ad raising awareness of the bowel cancer test available, I can’t imagine.

lieselotte · 28/02/2023 17:58

The blue fluid was ludicrous, but red water isn't realistic either, too thin and too little of it. But I suppose it's better than the blue.

Anyway they are misleading. They should say "wear our smelly scented pads that will give you thrush and leak everywhere at night".

DH was 60 august 21 and i was 60 Sept 22 so after April 21 , we got them the month after our birthdays. Same with my friends who have turned 60 this year

autocarrot · 28/02/2023 18:02

Am I the only one thinking "woaaaaaahhhhhh, Bodyform"?

Scented pads ought to be banned, not adverts with fake blood.

Randomhead · 28/02/2023 18:04

I'm passively intrigued about when there starts being a demand for more 'realistic' toilet roll adds. Why just show puppies and babies? Surely no one should be ashamed of a (literally) everyday bodily function

toilet paper is toilet paper. You don’t need to see the absorbency. Nappy ads show it too. Stop being embarrassed of your own body. Period blood is also nothing like fecal matter. The latter is a dangerous waste substance that can cause illness the other is blood

BeachBlondey · 28/02/2023 18:05

I agree with you. Bloody hell, I haven't seen a sanitary pad adverts using red liquid though, it was graphic enough when it was blue!

Have you noticed as well, that whilst incontinence pants exist for men and women, it is always only women in the adverts? You never see a man floating around his bedroom in Tena Man pants. Why is that?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 28/02/2023 18:07

Periods are a natural part of life for half of the population. Why are you so prudish about that?

And having lost a dear one to bowel cancer, ANYTHING that drives awareness of it and getting tested is fine by me. Or do you poop rose petals?

Not sure why you’re arguing with me. Your anocdata doesn’t negate the facts.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 28/02/2023 18:10

PS: The friend I lost to bowel cancer was 46 when he was diagnosed and 48 when he died. He did not have any blood in his poo. By the time he was diagnosed he was stage 4 and it was just too late.

@autocarrot
made for comfort. made for yooooou.

The act fast - ring 999

Nan had a stroke and was advised and ambulance would be 4/6 hours

That’s currently an advert on ITVX. I see it every night during Love Island.

I've never seen it. I'll be looking out for it now though!

Oysterbabe · 28/02/2023 18:21

I have no difficulty explaining any of these ads to my children, what are you struggling with?

JaneJeffer · 28/02/2023 18:22

@ArcaneWireless I found another good one when I was looking for that. I hadn't seen it before.

JaneJeffer · 28/02/2023 18:23

And it reminded me how much I don't miss period pain!

BeachBlondey · 28/02/2023 18:18

It starts with a man asking something like “can I talk to you about my urine leakage?” and DH and I both yell “no” at the TV

Ey - surely both are equally dangerous and non-dangerous at the same time?

Also, I wouldn't want to be caught short at your house if you think toilet paper absorbancy isn't important. Surely you buy your toilet paper based on how unlikely it is to fall apart in real use?!

Guis · 28/02/2023 18:33

I dislike the sanitary towel advert. Nothing to do with any sort of embarrassment or shame etc.
Because something happens doesn't mean you have to depict it so.
It seems crude in development. And a poor advert as I can honestly say I cannot recall what brand of sanitary towel it advertises.

Johnisafckface · 28/02/2023 18:34

Honestly all ads annoy me 😂With the internet and info being at our fingertips 24/7 why are they needed? But I've never really been influenced by them. I am surprised there are still ads for pads. It seems so commonplace. I think the ones to check for bowel cancer or any dreadful disease are fine as they may save lives, but the others aren't really needed.

Notaflippinclue · 28/02/2023 18:37

The erectile dysfunction one - always gets me

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 28/02/2023 18:46

@Johnisafckface

But I've never really been influenced by them.

So how did you select your broadband supplier? Or your phone? Or your tech?
