Sanitary pad ads on tv

Firstly - if it's been posted before, I apologise, as there's always one snippy person who will point it out to me.. (rolls eyes)
I just think they are horrible.. bad enough in the past, but now, we have to have splashes of blood on them? REALLY? Is it just me?

Actually, the NHS ads too.. why are they (presumably) spending millions advertising? (The latest one is the guy going to do his poo test.) These tests are sent out to - I think - over 60's in England anyway. Younger in Scotland, as I recall. Surely anyone younger knows by now, blood in poo, (try and) make a GP appointment?

Maybe it's just me being grumpy.. ? Every time I see either advert, I get the rage!

@DOBARDAN

Part of the selling point is the absorbancy

So yeah, we do

But they don’t use actual blood, it’s coloured water, besides the tiny amount of liquid used in the advert doesn’t represent a true period, which renders it useless as an absorbency guide.

CustardySergeant · 28/02/2023 17:27

There is nothing gory about the sanitary pads ads. It's just an animation showing drops of liquid and it makes sense that the drops are red, not blue as they used to be.

Benjispruce4 · 28/02/2023 17:29

I’ve never really understood the need to advertise sanitary protection. Has anyone ever gone and bought a type due to an ad?

LizzieBrooks · 28/02/2023 17:29

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/02/2023 17:18

The one where he's shimmying about in a kimono smiling at his lady friend? I don't mind that one. There's one with a rocket taking off which I'm more meh about.

That’s the one. I feel for the poor woman.

jannier · 28/02/2023 16:12

If everybody knew they wouldn't waste money on adds.....it's not real blood...do you object to films showing injuries and blood or is it just blood on pads that gets you?

This

The 'period ' drama one annoys me and the one for incontinence pants , not sure why

Oh yes the period drama one is dire. Incontinence pants do seem to be getting lots of advertising time, I guess they are profitable.

As for needing red fake blood in sanitary pad adverts will we soon have fake diarrhoea on Imodium adds? Or fake constipated poo for Dulcolax adds? I do hope not.

Orangepolentacake · 28/02/2023 17:30

So many things to worry about, you get hung up on something normalising periods (you know, so women and young girls don’t feel ashamed of something normal) and something else done to raise awareness so people don’t ignore what can be a serious symptom 🙄🙄🙄

Lol. No afternoon delight for you with the shaggy haired kimono wearer! Grin

Thomasina79 · 28/02/2023 17:31

Picture yourself as a 13 year old experiencing her first period. Her mother has told her nothing. Imagine her horror when instead of seeing blue liquid in her knickers she sees blood! I am 67 now and my mother told me nothing about periods until I had had two or three. Luckily I had a big sister whomexplained everything. To me the more down to earth information there is out there the better.

Benjispruce4 · 28/02/2023 17:32

13 year olds are taught about periods from about year4 these days.

Daisybee6 · 28/02/2023 17:33

Rellywobble · 28/02/2023 16:12

I think they are unnecessary, if a female doesn’t know STs exist then they are hardly going to have a TV …also the incontinence pads for women!

They're advertising their brand, why they're the 'best' etc. Its not to make people aware sanitary products exist

Wrongsideofpennines · 28/02/2023 17:33

Around half the population will use period products so why not advertise to them?!

And the uptake of FIT tests is around 71% in England. Less in Scotland. Cervical screening uptake is less than 50% which is crazy. If you see an advert then maybe it's a prompt to do it. Shame on the NHS/Public Health England/broadcasters for wanting to save lives 🙄

mamabear715 · 28/02/2023 16:31

Ah now, a lot of you are misunderstanding me.. I've done the poo tests myself, I know they save lives.. what I'm SAYING is, why is the NHS spending so much money that it supposedly hasn't got, when it's well known (especially due to people like bowelbabe) that you should be checked out.
As for the sanitary pad ads, @Rellywobble exactly! We all know what they are for - why do we have to have the gory pics?
I suppose we have to thank our lucky stars that they don't pour yellow liquid on the Tena ads!
@Imafirework Totally, re the Love Honey ads! eeewww.. I think these ads folks are all about 19 yrs & don't think about those of us who have to explain to kids..

With regards to your NHS comment, it's preventative medicine.

It's a hell of a lot cheaper to treat someone with stage 1 cancer than it is to treat someone with stage 4 cancer. So even with the added cost of the advert, it works out cheaper for the NHS in the long term.

Plus, y'know, there's the added benefit of less people dying. It's something we should be doing a hell of a lot more of.

LizzieBrooks · 28/02/2023 17:36

@MurderAtTheBeautyPageant Lol @ ‘shaggy haired kimono wearer’. What a turn on.

adriftabroad · 28/02/2023 17:38

100%YANBU OP

Do not get me started on the menopause and incontinence pants.

(Post menopause50yo)

Angelofthenortheast · 28/02/2023 17:38

I'm passively intrigued about when there starts being a demand for more 'realistic' toilet roll adds. Why just show puppies and babies? Surely no one should be ashamed of a (literally) everyday bodily function 😆

Was just about to say the same.

lieselotte · 28/02/2023 17:44

I have to say I also find all these ads annoying. The NHS is overstretched and if you do phone your GP you'll be told to go away.

If you call an ambulance because of FAST (stroke) you'll be lucky if they get to you in time.

What is the point of all these ads when the NHS can't cope as it is?

And I find the sanitary towel ads excruciating. As if you can skate in white!

Irritatedmum · 28/02/2023 17:45

I’d rather watch the ads than hear someone say they’ve ‘got the rage’.

ancientgran · 28/02/2023 17:47

The ad that annoys me most is the Verisure one, well actually all the Verisure ads. I don't know what it is but I hate them all.

MyStarBoy · 28/02/2023 17:48

YADNBU - Sanitary Towels
Who on god's earth wants to see blood on a sanitary towel. Which advertising idiot would think for one moment that people want to see something so graphic.

YABU - NHS bowel cancer.
Lots of people don't know about this and need to be aware. It's the type of cancer that if it isn't caught extremely early, there's sadly not a lot they can do.

bruffin · 28/02/2023 17:49

GPFavo · 28/02/2023 16:04

The bowel cancer test they send out is:
a) for over 50s, not over 60s
b) for blood that isn’t visible
Clearly you need to watch the advert a few more times.

Personally, I think every single person should do a FIT for bowel cancer. They cost £10 privately and could save your life. It’s absolutely untrue that only older people get bowel cancer. Dame Deborah James was stage 4 by 33 and I was stage 2 by 24.

It's over 60s both DH and I got one for our 60th birthday 😁

afinishedkiss · 28/02/2023 17:50

I HATE the incontinence one where she is parading around in a pair of pants....And PRETTY.....

Dente · 28/02/2023 17:50

You would think most people know these things but unfortunately they don’t. Some people stay away from Health Care Settings for a number of reasons, they maybe also be isolated from people and just don’t get this information that you think is second nature.

For others, seeing that advert might encourage that trip to the GP that they have been putting off.

so yea YABU

lieselotte · 28/02/2023 17:52

WeCome1 · 28/02/2023 16:47

It’s cheaper to treat people with early stage bowel cancer than later stage.

It is, but the kits are sent out automatically with an explanatory letter and booklet, so is advertising actually needed?
