Sanitary pad ads on tv

Firstly - if it's been posted before, I apologise, as there's always one snippy person who will point it out to me.. (rolls eyes)
I just think they are horrible.. bad enough in the past, but now, we have to have splashes of blood on them? REALLY? Is it just me?

Actually, the NHS ads too.. why are they (presumably) spending millions advertising? (The latest one is the guy going to do his poo test.) These tests are sent out to - I think - over 60's in England anyway. Younger in Scotland, as I recall. Surely anyone younger knows by now, blood in poo, (try and) make a GP appointment?

Maybe it's just me being grumpy.. ? Every time I see either advert, I get the rage!

Awareness of the poo test is needed. About a third of our patients ignore them each month. There is a big nhs poo campaign starting this week.

I’m nearly 52 and not had one either.

It’s from ages 57 in our area. It used to be age 60 though.

Fladdermus · 28/02/2023 17:07

I remember when santitary pads weren't allowed to be advertised at all. The stigma surrounding periods was horrendous. I remember using rolled up toilet paper instead of sanitary towels as the only shop in the village had a young man on the checkout and I was too embarrassed to buy them. Better to have adverts and work on removing that period shame.

I started thinking of the scene with the witches! “When shall we three meet again” (although, being a Pratchett fan, it was a bit different in my head!)

Well, I can do next Tuesday.

My uncle's cancer was only found doing a FIT test. Unfortunately, it had already spread to other areas. He never had blood in his poo.

MsFannySqueers · 28/02/2023 17:09

It’s the NHS advert ‘if something doesn’t feel right in your body then see your GP’ that maddens me. Every time it’s on I shout at the telly ‘yes and get told to just take a couple of paracetamol and you will be fine’.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/02/2023 17:10

Omg the inhumanity of the NHS promoting tests that could save lives. Who the hell do they think they are??

🙄

iklboo · 28/02/2023 17:11

@Somebodiesmother - Terry Pratchett fan?

Eightiesgirl · 28/02/2023 17:13

I don't like the sanitary towel ads either, they are now so needlessly graphic. However, I don't object to the bowel adverts.

ArcaneWireless · 28/02/2023 17:14

Me too @JaneJeffer

Even down to the men getting the vapours.

Those days are long gone for me now but it fine to say it how it is.

We bleed. We deal with it. And I love that it is a ‘period drama’.

gogohmm · 28/02/2023 17:14

The women going to a gig in incontinence pants really bugs me for some reason, incontinence is not normal, not inevitable - it's a medical condition that doctors should be taking seriously, and yes I'm fighting mine for treatment. If you do have medical incontinence you should be provided with appropriate pads as it is medically necessary.

Cocobutt · 28/02/2023 17:14

Seeing things a lot normalises it.

If there weren’t adverts then many people may ignore the bowel screening test as they’re too embarrassed or don’t understand it.
But having it on tv makes it less of a big deal.

It’s a bit like the anti smoking or speed kills advert.
Everyone knows they’re bad for you but they still show them for awareness.

I would also hope that the NHS would get a big discount when doing the TV adverts.

Allthecheeseplease · 28/02/2023 17:15

Gory? Period blood isn't gory or shameful. It's nature and a monthly occurance for a lot of people.

LizzieBrooks · 28/02/2023 17:15

I also hate the viagra one. Not because of the product, but the guy bouncing about the room with his satisfied grin. yuk.

ALongHardWinter · 28/02/2023 17:01

Regarding the PP who said the bowel cancer tests are sent out to over 50s,I'm 59 and I've never received one!

Different areas, think it's National over 60's

My area is 56 - lucky me was my 56th birthday 3 weeks ago, I had (and did) the test last week.

Like the other people I don't like smears or mammograms but I don't like the idea of being dead either !

oh I hate the giggly 'ooops I've pissed myself but that's okay' ads. We don't need to normalise incontinence!

gogohmm · 28/02/2023 17:16

The bowel cancer kids are sent out at 55 in England, dp had one arrive the week after his birthday (silly man still has it in the package despite my nagging)

Botw1 · 28/02/2023 17:17

@gogohmm

I agree

I think continence product advertisement should be banned for that reason

The one where he's shimmying about in a kimono smiling at his lady friend? I don't mind that one. There's one with a rocket taking off which I'm more meh about.

SgtBilko · 28/02/2023 16:01

The tests they send out test for occult blood i.e. blood that you can't see. I think public health campaigns are good and save lives.

I’m 56 had a test sent me last year I wasn’t embarrassed (medically minded anyway) sent off no cancer delighted. I’d have no problem again with being sent another.

Yes these adds do annoy me it’s not funny night times are my worst on a bad night it’s up to six times up and down to the bathroom.

LizzieBrooks · 28/02/2023 17:15

Agreed scruffy turn off completely.

MsFannySqueers · 28/02/2023 17:21

Yes I also agree with PP posters regarding the continence product adverts. Incontinence is a medical issue that should be addressed correctly it’s not normal to just go around peeing yourself. The yoga session one is the worst!

CMO · 28/02/2023 17:25

Just came to see what I'm missinf. I;ve not seen a TV ad for years.
