Sanitary pad ads on tv

Firstly - if it's been posted before, I apologise, as there's always one snippy person who will point it out to me.. (rolls eyes)
I just think they are horrible.. bad enough in the past, but now, we have to have splashes of blood on them? REALLY? Is it just me?

Actually, the NHS ads too.. why are they (presumably) spending millions advertising? (The latest one is the guy going to do his poo test.) These tests are sent out to - I think - over 60's in England anyway. Younger in Scotland, as I recall. Surely anyone younger knows by now, blood in poo, (try and) make a GP appointment?

Maybe it's just me being grumpy.. ? Every time I see either advert, I get the rage!

Ah now, a lot of you are misunderstanding me.. I've done the poo tests myself, I know they save lives.. what I'm SAYING is, why is the NHS spending so much money that it supposedly hasn't got, when it's well known (especially due to people like bowelbabe) that you should be checked out.
As for the sanitary pad ads, @Rellywobble exactly! We all know what they are for - why do we have to have the gory pics?
I suppose we have to thank our lucky stars that they don't pour yellow liquid on the Tena ads!
@Imafirework Totally, re the Love Honey ads! eeewww.. I think these ads folks are all about 19 yrs & don't think about those of us who have to explain to kids..

It is higher time that we no longer are seen to bleed blue. I’m all for it to be shown as red.

Bowel screening? A lifesaver. The more people who know about it the better. It is so simple to do these days - no longer some sort of juggling act.

Without routine screening I may not have my mam.

Randomhead · 28/02/2023 16:32

@MotherOfPuffling what’s the word occult got to do with Shakespeare??!

ArcaneWireless · 28/02/2023 16:33

High time. Sake.

Randomhead · 28/02/2023 16:38

@mamabear715 people don’t know that. And some do know but put it off because it’s ‘yuck’ or ‘embarrassing.’ That’s why people are still dying of bowel cancer which is easily detectable and very treatable if caught early.

according to the NHS 10-15% of Fitt tests are positive and 5% are false positive. So 5-10% of people who take the test are prevented from a later stage of cancer.

£2m on a TV campaign is a lot cheaper than treating later stage cancers.

Soapboxqueen · 28/02/2023 16:41

Making health awareness info as acessable as possible is important. Even if it seems like its explaining the obvious. No matter how much 'everyone knows' something, not everyone actually does. Being really frank helps.

My own dh should have been hospitalised last year but wasn't because he was told to come back if he had a specfic symptom. He thought that symptom would look like x but it actually looks like y.

As for period adverts, I'm glad they are showing a more realistic view of the what the products are actually used for. Periods are not dirty and for too long women have been expected to keep quiet and treat it as a shameful thing.

It isn't an issue explaining any of this to children. It really isn't.

wherethewaterisdarker · 28/02/2023 16:43

Sounds like you have major (shame?) issues around menstruation OP. If you still have periods (or even not as this will likely be part of a greater disgust towards women’s bodies) I’d urge you to try and think critically about what you find so horrifying about menstrual blood.

Thisismeyeah · 28/02/2023 16:45

Normalize periods instead of shying away from them and they wont make people feel "sick", you'll get used to it and I do believe these things are good to be open to the younger generation so it becomes the norm when they grow up.

Caz113 · 28/02/2023 16:46

I agree with the sanitary pads, I don’t really like seeing the ones with blood etc , we all know what they’re for it’s a bit OTT.

Andrex seem to have done alright using a cute puppy bundling around on their adverts, we all know toilet roll is for wiping poo and pee but it doesn’t need to actually be shown to get the advertising across .
NHS ones don’t bother me though, the more awareness the better.

WeCome1 · 28/02/2023 16:47

It’s cheaper to treat people with early stage bowel cancer than later stage.

Benjispruce4 · 28/02/2023 16:47

Why is it better to see blue liquid? Blood is red. Why should we be ashamed?

AngelinaFibres · 28/02/2023 16:48

Randomhead · 28/02/2023 16:11

Loads of people don’t do the poo tests because they are embarrassed. Normalising them in this way helps to break that barrier and saves lives.

I couldn’t give a fuck if it makes you grumpy if the result is people don’t die.

This. My grandmother was horrified by the idea of going to the doctor with any personal problems. Any words to describe bodily functions were impossible for her to say to a GP. We have bowel cancer in the maternal line . She had symptoms but didn't seek help until they were too far advanced and her bowel cancer had spread to her brain. It had killed her mother and grandmother and I bet they didn't talk about it either. The test is so simple and it is so important that people do it. Bowel cancer I very treatable if caught early. If it isn't it will kill you.

Merkins · 28/02/2023 16:50

My 16 year old DD finds the, “Dick, todger, Willy, wang” etc. ad hilarious 🤷‍♀️

Botw1 · 28/02/2023 16:53

Sounds like you need to grow up a bit op

MotherOfPuffling · 28/02/2023 16:53

Randomhead · 28/02/2023 16:32

@MotherOfPuffling what’s the word occult got to do with Shakespeare??!

I started thinking of the scene with the witches! “When shall we three meet again” (although, being a Pratchett fan, it was a bit different in my head!)

Ludo19 · 28/02/2023 16:55

BollocksToThem · 28/02/2023 16:03

The 'period ' drama one annoys me and the one for incontinence pants , not sure why

The "period" drama one is utterly awful

xogossipgirlxo · 28/02/2023 16:56

I actually thought it's nice they FINALLY stop pretending we have blue periods.

JaneJeffer · 28/02/2023 16:59

I love the period drama ad

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 28/02/2023 16:59

Women have periods. Sanitary products are marketed to help them deal with those periods. I don't know why you would object to this. How is it different to any other type of product that might be advertised?

Do you feel uncomfortable with people being open and honest about menstruation for some reason?

DOBARDAN · 28/02/2023 16:59

The NHS poo test adverts don’t bother me but the sanitary pads adverts do. We don’t need to see blood, or any other coloured liquid, being splashed onto the pad. Just like we wouldn’t need to see poo coloured smear marks on toilet paper advertising.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/02/2023 17:00

'gory pics'

you sound like such a ninny, OP.

DarkShade · 28/02/2023 17:00

Do you have problems with seeing blood in adverts for plasters, too?

I think it's fine. It's literally just period blood, why should we be disgusted or ashamed to see it on TV, in the context of an advert for period products.

Botw1 · 28/02/2023 17:00

@DOBARDAN

Part of the selling point is the absorbancy

So yeah, we do

ALongHardWinter · 28/02/2023 17:01

Regarding the PP who said the bowel cancer tests are sent out to over 50s,I'm 59 and I've never received one!

Benjispruce4 · 28/02/2023 17:03

I’m nearly 52 and not had one either.
