That every one has forgotten they all hated Camilla?

I'm very puzzled why no one talks about how hated Camilla was the 80s/90s?? The tabloids absolutely tore her apart. But now she is 'Queen' and we have all conveniently forgotten. I have no personal interest in the royal family, I'm just perplexed.

Yes she really was vilified far more than William and Harry’s wives ever were. I remember the nasty stuff that was said about her appearance. I’m pleased they’ve persevered though and have risen above it

It also seemed pretty abusive. He was about 12 years older than her. Camila even older. Dragging Diana into their relationship, who was barely more than a child, whilst carrying on his relationship with Camila, was deeply unpleasant, manipulative and abusive behaviour. Seems to run in the family really.

Yes this, the whole relationship was very unequal, Charles was so much older etc, he had all the power of course. Diana was a very young woman who was exploited, both by the Royals and sadly, her own family.

Her maternal grandmother (Ruth, Lady Fermoy?), a friend of the Queen Mother, helped to steer Diana in Charles's direction when she was 19. She had done similar to her daughter, pushing Frances (Diana's mother) into a marriage with the much older Earl Spencer at 18. Later she gave evidence against her own daughter in the divorce case, causing Frances to lose custody of her children. Diana and her siblings had an unhappy childhood.

Diana's parents and her older
sisters could have warned her off the marriage, given her some guidance. One of her sisters was married to the late Queen's private secretary, she must have known the true situation.

Not saying Diana was perfect at all, but she was definitely more sinned against.

Agree with this. I feel her own family are most to blame if someone were to be blamed.

I’m a bit young to opine greatly here but do think Diana was cuckolded to a certain extent, yes, she not only learned how to play the game but took it several levels up and was recognised in her own right. At least it wasn’t played out in the course of todays media. It could've been royal handbags at dawn, Camilla vs Diana forever intruding into their lives like Kate and Meghan Hmm

Underminer · 28/02/2023 01:45

I’ve met her through work about 18 years ago and spent several hours on her company. At the time I award young and didn’t follow Diana media / everyone hate Camilla stuff.
IRL she was a joy to have with us for the time she was. Everyone liked her. She was natural and out everyone at ease. There was no sense that she thought of herself as a VIP. She seemed genuinely interested in the work, in the people and their stories. She remembered people’s names who she spoke to from the start of the event to the end, and she left a really positive impression on people who really didn’t like her before she arrived to liking her after she left.

Sorry to be a pedant but cuckold applies to men not women whose spouse has sexually betrayed them. Diana could not be a cuckold.

mathanxiety · 28/02/2023 01:55

Charles has definitely got away with having his cake and eating it too.

eveoha · 28/02/2023 02:07

All royal Family mostly amoral and hypocritical - we are expected to accept and forgive and fund their their execrable behaviour 🙏🏽☘️

Spongeboob · 28/02/2023 02:17

@Eyerollcentral You're right but the female version sounds even more specifically worse.

What on earth do you mean??

Spongeboob · 28/02/2023 02:23

@Eyerollcentral Cuckqwean?

FishBowlSwimmer · 28/02/2023 02:25

We haven't forgotten, and hate is too strong a word. I think with the passing of time we can see clearly that Charles and Camilla genuinely love each other, that it was "Royal Protocol" that caused the situation that caused Diana so much distress. That there would have been much less pain all around had they been allowed to marry in the first place.

All three of them (Diana, Charles and Camilla) acted badly at times, I can forgive their human frailty under the circumstances they were forced into.

StarsSand · 28/02/2023 02:31

I remember.

I dislike every one of them and think it's insane that they are held above us.

An infamous adulterer as head of the CoE. And we're all going to clap and cheer.

SunsetStrip · 28/02/2023 02:35

I never hated her and neither have my parents or IL's. We all quite like her. I liked Diana at first too but never idolised her and found her quite wingey towards the end.

Spongeboob · 28/02/2023 02:23

@Eyerollcentral Cuckqwean?

How is that worse than cuckold and even if it was why wouldn’t you either just use that term or say, idk, her husband cheated on her/betrayed her trust rather than use the male version? 🤯

ThinWomansBrain · 28/02/2023 02:55

yabu - many people don't give a flying fuck

may want to see the end of the monarchy - but no personal emotion towards individuals.

Snugglemonkey · 28/02/2023 03:21

SirVixofVixHall · 27/02/2023 22:18

Same.
I found Diana less likeable.

Me too. I have never liked Diana, or hated Camilla.

Pearfacebananapoop · 27/02/2023 23:05

I totally agree people have short memories. Same with Charles. And despite his lack of self control recently I think we all know where Harry's problems originate from.

Diana also had poor self control.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 28/02/2023 03:30

People also forget that the queen was vilified for the way she behaved after Diana died.

Judging by the nauseating sycophancy that surrounded her later years, people do indeed have VERY short memories 🙄.

MarshaMelrose · 28/02/2023 03:34

She had terrible press. People used to shout things at her whilst she went about her business.
Personally, I never hated her. And over the time I've grown to really like her. She seems humorous, friendly and down to earth. And it's so clear how happy she and Charles are together. You only get one life, why shouldn't you try to be happy. Whether Camilla had existed or not, Diana and Charles would never have made it together. Their temperaments were totally mismatched.

It was all so long ago. Diana had forgiven Charles before she died and they were on friendly terms so I have no idea why other people can't let it go. I'm glad most people have moved on.

I think these days people look back on that time a bit shamefully. There was nothing wrong with the Queen keeping the princes at Balmoral and away from the press. Why anyone would think that their grieving process was helped by having to shake hands with a crowd of strangers, I don't know. Don't most people, especially after hearing William and Harry speak of their experiences, think that the Queen was actually in the right protecting their privacy? Or do they really think their morbid desire to see two boys crying out their grief, trumps the boys' welfare?

oneyouknow · 28/02/2023 03:43

From some one who has always been a royalist and adored the late queen, I now think that Charles being so dam poor and looking like he's going to be a terrible monarch is distracting from Camilla. Sorry I just can't like him, so she fades into obscurity.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 28/02/2023 03:46

@MarshaMelrose i don’t recall her being criticised for “protecting the princes” (the church service where their mum wasn’t mentioned must have felt like real protection 🙄), my recall was her being criticised for not being prepared to break any protocol over things like flying the flag at half mast etc.

I wasn’t one of the weirdos that went to visit London to do some performance grieving though so I guess my perspective is different 🤷‍♀️.

GobbieMaggie · 28/02/2023 03:48

Hellocatshome · 27/02/2023 22:17

If it helps I have never hated her.

Nor me. The only thing I ever found perplexing was why he didn’t marry her in the first place.

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 28/02/2023 03:48

While the media tore her apart I never cared much. Until Di died Di was the one I disliked.
