That every one has forgotten they all hated Camilla?

I'm very puzzled why no one talks about how hated Camilla was the 80s/90s?? The tabloids absolutely tore her apart. But now she is 'Queen' and we have all conveniently forgotten. I have no personal interest in the royal family, I'm just perplexed.

I totally agree people have short memories. Same with Charles. And despite his lack of self control recently I think we all know where Harry's problems originate from.

DeeCeeCherry · 27/02/2023 23:05

Why would she be hated now? She's an older woman, people would rather take a swipe at Diana for having been younger and beautiful (although they wont say that). Camilla is OW goals isnt she, I think thats part of the admiration for her.

At least on MN, that is. On Twitter etc its not exactly a Camilla love-in

YewandOak · 27/02/2023 23:07

I've never hated Camilla, always quite liked her from what I've read about her.

Diana I couldn't stand, she always came across as sly and false to me. Or that's how she appeared to me in the media. She was probably a nice woman to people that knew her.

WTF475878237NC · 27/02/2023 23:07

I never liked her and still don't! Given Diana was only 17 when our King started making moves on her I can't understand any mother not disliking him nor Camilla. I'd be devastated if my 20 year-old married someone who wanted someone else all along.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/02/2023 23:08

I’ve always been indifferent

Nimbostratus100 · 27/02/2023 23:09

I have never known anyone irl who has ever had any feelings one way or another

BadAmbassador · 27/02/2023 23:12

ExtraOnions · 27/02/2023 22:20

…because time moves us on

Exactly. Do we have to always feel exactly the same about someone decades later?

donquixotedelamancha · 27/02/2023 23:12

I voted YABU because there is a RF section for this stuff.

I have never known anyone irl who has ever had any feelings one way or another

This. Having strong feelings about a celeb you don't know is a bit sad.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 27/02/2023 23:16

I think the fact is if Diana hadn't died they couldn't have married that grates as well.

ArcaneWireless · 27/02/2023 23:19

Not sure how you can hate someone you don’t know.

I never hated her. I wonder if I should be perplexed at that?

It absolutely boggles me how many wide eyed ingénues there are in the world though. My per is proper plexed at that.

OneHundredPercentCompostable · 27/02/2023 23:19

SirVixofVixHall · 27/02/2023 22:18

Same.
I found Diana less likeable.

I agree.

OhNoNotThatAgain · 27/02/2023 23:26

The tabloids wanted the public to dislike her. I don't pay much attention to that kind of shit-stirring, and good for her, she maintained a dignified silence and just got on with things.

Hapoydayz · 27/02/2023 23:27

Most people I knew didn’t like Diana. It was always surprising how the press painted her as some beautiful saint. There were some crazy people that went crazy when she died but that was a minority. Didn’t really have any thoughts either way on Camilla

Amispringy · 27/02/2023 23:27

I never hated her

SwordToFlamethrower · 27/02/2023 23:29

People tend to go along with the media narrative. So if the media hates Harry and Megan, then everyone hate them. If the media now loves Camilla, then everyone now loves Camilla.

The herd mentality is hilarious

PeekAtYou · 27/02/2023 23:31

If a real life person was bitter 20+ years later then the people around them would be concerned about their mental health.
I think it helps that divorce and stepfamilies are more common now so people are able to let it go- especially as they have stayed together and been married longer than his first marriage.

Ponderingwindow · 27/02/2023 23:35

even bitter exes sometimes come around to being friends again with enough time. the people not involved in the relationship can certainly forgive and even come to understand.

merrymelodies · 27/02/2023 23:35

I never hated her (I don't know the woman personally) but I thought she was out of line interfering in Charles's marriage to Diana. And carrying on with their affair before, during and after... Diana never stood a chance.

Kittlbua · 27/02/2023 23:35

People are too busy hating Meghan Markle to hate Camilla any more.

I think time changes everything and people's actions are seen in a different light. Yes, Charles and Camilla were having an affair and the whole Tampongate thing was grim, but they were and are a couple who love each other and are well-matched and due to circumstances Charles wasn't able to marry her back then. Diana was dragged in as the sacrifical lamb to provide the heir and the spare. And it all went awry.

feellikeanalien · 27/02/2023 23:37

I never understand how people can hate/love members of the Royal Family. Most people only really know what they read in the press about them. I lived through the whole Charles/Diana/Camilla thing and apart from it making masses of tabloid headlines I didn't really have strong feelings about any of them, just found it mildly entertaining. I did find all the wailing at the time of Diana's death really bizarre though. I think nearly everyone I knew felt the same.

I'm sure there were issues with all three of them but I feel that they were all caught up in an outdated institution which hadn't kept up with the times but, apart from a good gossip thread on Mumsnet, it makes zero difference to most people's lives and I really couldn't be bothered wasting my energy hating a woman in her 70s who I have never met.

KilljoysMakeSomeNoise · 27/02/2023 23:39

I never hated her. I was pretty indifferent to all the crap surrounding Charles, Diana, and Camilla.

I can't imagine her as Queen, mainly because there's only been one monarch in my lifetime, so when someone says Queen, I think Elizabeth, as I'm sure many people do.

It's all very convenient for the establishment that the British people have amnesia

Shows how easily we're all manipulated

CockleburIck · 27/02/2023 23:40

Never hated, nor had any feeling about her when I'd never met her; then I met her (briefly!) and I liked her.

It's all very convenient for the establishment that the British people have amnesia

Are you reading your own thread? The vast majority are saying they never hated her, it was just the gutter press with a bee in its bonnet.

TheBigWangTheory · 27/02/2023 23:44

Binjob118 · 27/02/2023 22:33

They don't have amnesia. Very very few people cared in the first place, even fewer give a shiny shit now.

You seem terribly confused about your own premise.

Addymontgomeryfan · 27/02/2023 22:16

The tabloids hated Camilla because they were painting Diana as a saint.

This is it, in a nutshell.
