My dog ate a hedgehog

VandaMay · 26/02/2023 16:50

I think it was was dead already and my dog has just eaten all of it whilst out walking. He was a little distance away and I thought it was a stick. He’s eaten all of it, should I be worried about rabies?

Are the spikes not on the body like?Hmm

Well yes - but they don't cover it completely do they? Just the back. The stomach and face aren't spiky.

I'd be amazed if any dog could eat an entire hedgehog, spikes and all, without getting at least one stuck in his mouth or on his nose on the way down.

Moltenpink · 26/02/2023 19:42

Was waiting for the photo of a happy looking Lab Smile

That’s disgusting! Clearly keeping a close eye on your dog 😳

My Lab dug up and ate our dead cat, threw her up, then ate her again.

That's disgusting.

The OP said he’d eaten all of it though?

CleaningOutMyCloset · 26/02/2023 19:47

My ddog ate a hedgehog once, cut his mouth up a bit, but nothing untoward happened to him, which is more than I can say for the hedgehog

rocksonrocks · 26/02/2023 19:48

Have you ever seen a hedgehog?

Now that I think hard about it I have actually never ever seen a hedgehog.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 26/02/2023 19:49

@RahRahOhLaLa I (maybe wrongly) assumed that she didn't mean the spikes as of course that would be a vet emergency.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/02/2023 19:49

I was also going to ask if he was a lab 😆

VandaMay · 26/02/2023 19:50

He’s still well and snoring peacefully sleeping off his feast.

will be taking him out for his evening poo shortly- wish us luck 🤣

I was also going to ask if he was a lab 😆

He’s a lab crossed with Vizzler so has really long legs. He effortlessly steals off kitchen work tops so he’s not allowed in the kitchen unsupervised 😁

My dog is terrified of hedgehogs, I know if there's one in the garden because he bolts inside and sits upright, quivering and staring at the door.

I'm having to reassess his potential as a guard dog.

I realise this isn't helpful...sorry

Bluekerfuffle · 26/02/2023 19:54

VandaMay · 26/02/2023 18:38

Oh he thinks he’s the bees knees, I just caught him trying to get roast chicken off the work top, I do my best cross tone of voice and say ‘No that’s naughty’ and he just tries to give me his paw and lick my face. He’s the daftest dog I’ve ever met 😂

Ew. I would be keeping that dead hedgehog flavoured mouth well away from me for weeks.

Lung worm is a worry.

oopdedoop · 26/02/2023 20:02

Telling @Withnailandeye to 'go away' was pretty rude when they were clearly trying to help you.

So many people think that because something is on a shiny display in a veterinary waiting room and recommended by the vets then it must be the rolls royce of foods. As @Withnailandeye points out, practices are paid a commission to display and recommend this food. This surprises a lot of people.

the All About Dog Food site that has been recommended is a great site to compare.

www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/the-dog-food-directory

The site can be quite an eye opener into foods we blindly assume are quite good when in reality they are pretty nutritiously poor.

Hope your dog is fine from his snack.

Vitriolinsanity · 26/02/2023 20:03

I'd be more worried about fleas since he looks so bloody smug.

My two rolled in 🦊 shit today. They are on the naughty step.

Vitriolinsanity · 26/02/2023 20:05

One of them is a Vizsla she's a total barbarian crossed with a supermodel.

Unsolicited 'help' from snarky remarks after seeing a bag of food in OP's photos.

Some of us are happy making our own choices.

Mothership4two · 26/02/2023 20:09

Even badgers, hedgehogs only predator, only eat the flesh and leave the spines etc. Greedy dog!

MegaClutterSlut · 26/02/2023 20:09

Ewww thankfully my dog hasn't eaten a hedgehog

My dog has a thing about dead slugs. She rubs her face all over it which means she gets stringy slug guts stuck all over her face which is a pita to get off 🤮🤮

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/02/2023 20:10

Gorgeous dog OP.

Anyone remember the thread about the ex that fed hs kids badger?

And some wouldn't know.
If the information isn't wanted by you, scroll on by. If highlighting the sight encourages one owner to investigate what is in their dog's dinner then it's useful.

Just because you don't find it useful doesn't mean a dozen others wont.

Holibobbins · 26/02/2023 20:14

I didn't post the royal Canin I for to be snarky.

I just hate it when people are spending £60 a bag for food that has a 'red' rating and is really nutritionally poor.

Obviously if they spend £60 they THINK they're making a good choice but it's money down the drain and often people don't know because it's in so many vet offices!

You can get food that so much better for them for much cheaper!

But they won't know that if the information isn't shared! ❤️
