My dog ate a hedgehog

I think it was was dead already and my dog has just eaten all of it whilst out walking. He was a little distance away and I thought it was a stick. He’s eaten all of it, should I be worried about rabies?

Another bit of 'unsolicited advice'

Pineapple cured my dog of poo eating. Apparently it makes the poo taste quite bitter (I wasn't going to test the theory)
Gave him a bit daily and it broke his habit.

My Lab dug up and ate our dead cat, threw her up, then ate her again.

That's disgusting.

Dear GOD that has made me laugh so much 🤣

I would call the vet because the question is how did the hedgehog die? They are really still meant to be in hibernation although they are known to change nests during the process sometimes. My concern was they were sick and might pass on illness to your dog.

VandaMay · 26/02/2023 20:55

Just had a really big 💩 didn’t even wince (the dog not me)

Mine found a very dead deer once. Stuffed herself rigid, then rolled in it, coating herself in very rancid runny deer fat.

Which would have been fine (ish...) were it not the day before Crufts. So she trotted round the arena fluffy from her shower, and very very full. I spent the whole time going, 'Please don't crap.... please don't crap...'

Another time they ate dead puffins. Who, it turns out, have very stiff and indigestible wing feathers. Which I found out at 3am when they vomited up feathers and gut-slime all over the rug in the holiday cottage we were staying in.

Dogs are twats.

I once stepped on a hedgehog and ended up in minors A&E. It was very painful!

I hope your dog is okay.

VandaMay · 26/02/2023 21:00

Just noticed he has some spots on his winkie, hope this is not related to hedgehog revenge

Were you hopping all the way home HoppyHoppy?

Vet nurse - it would be the spines that i would be concerned about , if we ever see a dog that has swallowed cocktail or kebab sticks it can be quite a difficult surgery and will often get complications.
I would definitely be seeking a vets opinion tonight if this were my dog .

BrigitteBond · 26/02/2023 21:10

Is it not a bit early in the year for hedgehogs?

That’s disgusting! Clearly keeping a close eye on your dog 😳

News alert. Dogs ARE disgusting.

pawprintseverywhere · 26/02/2023 21:34

I don't know if I've missed it but did he eat the actual spines? The fleshy underbelly not much to fret over, maybe treat for lungworm as precaution... but if he ate the spines then you need to keep a very close eye on him they can puncture his intestines or cause a blockage. My cousins dog ended up at deaths door after eating a jelly fish, not toxic but the spines stung him inside and his body went into defence mode and his organs started failing. 3 operations later, he's doing OK

It's quite common. Hedgehogs will have come out of hibernation and badgers will be hungry. This is the time of year we found a dead one minus all the soft bits under the kid's swing

Oh, OK. Not many badgers around here, and I'd expect hedgehogs to still be hibernating in February. I won't pretend to have any particular knowledge apart from my own observations though.

I recently saw an episode of... I want to say Vet on The Hill? Where a dog had humped a hedgehog and had spines where he really wouldn't want them!!

Mothership4two · 26/02/2023 22:46

I'm guessing the OP's dog found the leftover hedgehog "shell" left by a badger @BrigitteBond. To eat a whole hedgehog that quickly would be pretty incredible even for a lab.

Hibernation depends upon winter temperatures ie how cold it is and they will come out occasionally and sometimes move nests. Badgers will also dig them out of their nests

Mariposista · 26/02/2023 22:47

OP I just knew your dog would be a labrador before I saw the pic (he is gorgeous btw). My lab has eaten so much poo I can't count the times (sheep, cow, fox, dog, cat - you name it, he has eaten it). 4 face masks (no 3 took 3 weeks to pass through), my mum's gardening glove (which he sicked up twice and re-ate it before I managed to stamp in the nice pile of sick to stop him going for a 3rd attempt), snails, ants, flies...but he has never actually eaten anything that big, still alive. He is sat next to me now asleep, and I will not be giving him any ideas. Good luck - you have the sympathy of another long suffering lab mum hahahaha

Nellieinthebarn · 26/02/2023 22:49

I'd be really worried that the hedgehog died from eating poisoned slugs and could pass the poison on to your dog. Contact a vet to ask what to look out for.

2bazookas · 26/02/2023 23:03

The HH hasn't got rabies, but it probably had fleas; so watch out for transfer to dog then you.
Hedgehog fleas can bite humans , don't ask how I know....

Surplus2requirements · 26/02/2023 23:30

Hedgehogs are delinquents, terrorising upstanding neighbourhood dogs and trying to steal their food
Here's one I caught breaking into my home

If you recognise it please contact the police

MakingTheVeganYorkshirePud · 27/02/2023 00:04

If he 'ate it all', then my concern would be the spikes. I'd definitely be ringing the vets whether he was presenting well or not.

The other day I found a sicky bile patch on the floor. In the centre was a magnet the size of a £2 coin. Fuck knows where he got that from?

I'm now using one of those fabric muzzle type things when we are walking because I have been unsuccessful with the 'leave it' command - feel a bit of a failure. He eats sticks constantly, and anything else in sight (not a hedgehog yet), and I'm really scared he'll hurt himself. Like others, he is a rescue who was starved.

Labralion · 27/02/2023 20:00

@VandaMay how's the dog today??
