To think schoolgirls wearing exposing skirts isn’t a feminism issue but a safeguarding one?!

Following on from the thread about skirt length inspections, AIBU to think stopping underage girls from revealing their underwear and bum cheeks to male teachers (or any teachers) isn’t ‘internalised misogyny’ but basic safeguarding?

Or am I just ‘not enlightened enough’ to understand that underage girls can expose what they want to grown men as long as they’re ‘happy and comfortable’ with it?

Disclaimer: I believe adult women can wear whatever TF they want and are not responsible for men’s reactions to them, but this is about children which is a different ball game.

Interested to know your thoughts!

Maybe men just shouldn't be teachers.

Botw1 · 24/02/2023 19:54

It's utter nonsense that whole bums, pants and vaginas are routinely on display

No one has to dress so as to avoid discomort in others

Even though teachers on here have said that they see full knickers in their classroom

I have posted this on a few threads but this is what the school in question are deeming inappropriate

I happened to walk behind some schoolgirls today. One of them had her skirt so short I literally could see bum cheek. I’m about as free and easy about nudity as it is possible to be and I will defend anyone’s right to wear whatever they like BUT that isn’t school uniform and I don’t think it’s appropriate school wear.

So why do we have laws about public nudity then?

Mooshamoo · 24/02/2023 19:56

Whatever let them wear what they want i can't be bothered with it anymore. It's up to the teachers to solve it

What exactly is the reason for girls wanting their so short they hardly conceal the buttocks? I saw a bunch of schoolgirls walking through town and actually thought they had forgotten to put their skirts on!! They were literally the same length as their blazers.
I honestly felt embarrassed for them. It's not a good look at all

Agreed. And if it was just something that looked silly, like a ridiculous fashion, that's different, they can crack on But knickers and bum cheeks on display? Totally inappropriate in a public street.

Botw1 · 24/02/2023 19:58

@KimberleyClark

I actually don't know

🤷

Well I'm a woman and I feel uncomfortable if someone shows me their underwear, arse or genitals. That doesn't make me a pervert, and damn right it's down to them not to make me feel uncomfortable.

Exactly.
But the argument is, they’re only children. They should not be held responsible for making you uncomfortable.
If it makes you uncomfortable that’s because of what you associate what you see with.

These days it seems, young people do not believe that common decency should be expected or imposed. They believe common decency should be an option and we should be free to choose whether we are going to behave decently or not without being accountable for our choices.

But saying something is ‘too short’ ie shorter than their rule isn’t saying it’s inappropriate or sexual.
Some schools have knee high, some have just above, some have calf, some have ankle.
Frankly it doesn’t really matter what, if you’re not going to support the schools rules and tell your child sometimes they just have to do what they are told then don’t enrol in that school.

Pastapizzalover · 24/02/2023 20:00

I think people should read the other thread.

A school has herded every girl in school and had male teachers measure their skirts.

No one has defended wearing tiny skirts.

People have said trousers are a solution.

But this isn’t a case of just telling girls to roll down their skirts - that is fair enough. This is a case of girls wearing the school authorised skirt but it being an inch above the schools declared cut off point so being treated as a problem.

OP do you worry about boys wearing shorts for PE? Is that a safeguarding concern if they’re above the knee?

Exactly this.

show your thigh in PE ✅

Why can't they just wear trousers?

Presumably the issue then would be how tight they are so the male teachers would need to line then up and inspect their bums instead

VestaTilley · 24/02/2023 20:13

Agree. I also don’t know why we don’t just do away with skirts in schools anyway and get all children to wear trousers. (No, not for “modesty” but to protect girls from the inevitable harassment).

Fairislefandango · 24/02/2023 20:15

It would be extremely naïve or disingenuous to suggest that it's not perfectly normal for many teenage girls to want to dress in a way that is revealing, provocative, rebellious and which will be attractive to the opposite sex. They don't do it by accident. But adults should not be encouraging them or allowing this in schools. Neither should there be any suggestion that this way of dressing is what causes sexual harassment or assault by men and boys. That is caused solely by the perpetrator.

princesssugarless · 24/02/2023 20:16

The skirts I have an issue with are the super short Lycra ones that barely cover bottoms and indeed sometimes don't. I don't care if students roll up a knee length skirt, I don't want to turn round and see someone's bottom or pants . It's not misogyny, it's not female empowerment, they look ridiculous and they are not following a perfectly reasonable dress code. (Ours is reasonable and doesn't specify knee length - it can be shorter but shouldn't be stretchy) Majority of workplaces have a dress code , very few of them contain skirts the same length as Julia Roberts wears in Pretty Woman. Don't get me started about if the girls sit on the floor . I have the same issue with leggings to be fair , a lot are see though and look absolutely stupid with a shirt and blazer.

Fairislefandango · 24/02/2023 20:16

You think that trousers prevent sexual harassment?!

I wore trousers all through secondary school

The sexual harassment started when I was 12

Riapia · 24/02/2023 20:20

The sole reason for rolling up the skirts.
Attention.
We all know that.

I was just thinking : if we saw a load of teenage boys out on the street wearing tiny shorts that showed half their ass cheeks , what would we think?

I would think it's against public decency,
I would also be concerned for their safety and they are underage and are walking around a public place with half their naked bums on display.

There would be uproar

The sexualisation of women has become so normal that it is seen as ok by some people for masses of young teenage girls to do this , even though they are underage.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 24/02/2023 20:33

For the love of God, can people read the actual facts of the matter as related on this forum by a parent of a child at the school in question ?

They are policing whether skirts are precisely knee length. Not rolled up, not flashing underwear and anatomy, but whether an unfortunate female student might have grown two inches making the skirt just above knee length.

An overtly rolled up skirt may be an issue to be commented on on a few pupils, although the obsession with policing what young women are wearing and how helpless men are in the face of such temptation is mind boggling, however every girl in that school were herded around and inspected by male staff members for the transgression of their skirts not being exactly knee length. If that doesn't sound sinister to you, I wonder what it would take.

This is a wholly unrealistic and unreasonable scenario because children GROW. Are they looking at the boys trousers with such interest and being punitive if they've had a growth spurt and suddenly said trousers are exposing their socks?

I highly doubt it

There's an ongoing thread about boys with their hands down their trousers on their genitals

Its been going on years from young boys to young men

Can you imagine the uproar if girls started walking around with their hands down their trousers/skirts?

Boys touching their genitals in public is so normal it is seen as okay by masses of people
