To be surprised these children don’t have proper beds?

Out of DC’s friends whose houses we’ve visited, I’ve seen three who don’t have proper beds, just a mattress on the floor. I’m really surprised because these aren’t poor families by any means (professional jobs, foreign holidays, nice clothes, etc) and the parents all have beds themselves! AIBU to think a bed is one of the most basic things you’d buy your child if your standard of living is generally good? Or is this totally normal?

A trend my arse.

All children should have a proper bed. I don't care how trendy it is to sleep on the floor.

SS would be all over a WC family if their children didn't have a proper bed.

petal they aren’t even all over the ones who are being abused, this wouldn’t even be on the list!

A trend for people who can't be arsed buying their kid a bed lol.

💯

um why are you on line attacking the op like this?

FlappyValley · 23/02/2023 22:54

I mean, do I think it’s a little unusual to buy yourself a bed but not your kids when you can clearly afford to? Yes. Am I accusing them of neglect? No. Just surprised as I’d never seen this among my friends as a kid.

Interesting to know it’s a Montessori thing though - that makes sense!

Don't 'petal' me. It would be seen as neglect. Unless you are into wanky trends.

I can assure you it’s not, it’s perfectly normal.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 23/02/2023 22:56

I can assure you SS can list no beds as a sign of neglect. They did it to me. My children had beds. The sw was a twat.

Perfectly normal to not bother buying your children a bed? Nope.

They are. But not to attack.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 23/02/2023 22:59

Growing up I had a bed which had room to sleep underneath it. Which is what I did until I was about 11, when my parents got a modern divan bed and desk for me going to high school. If you're getting good sleep, isn't that the important thing?

Housefullofcatsandkids · 23/02/2023 23:00

I chose to sleep on a mattress on the floor when I was about 13. I liked how it looked and it felt very Japanese at the time lol 😂
My kids have always had beds but they've all gone through phases of preferring the floor. My ND son spent a good few months sleeping in a large cardboard box filled with blankets when he was about 9!

quietnightmare · 23/02/2023 23:00

@Solittletimeforwine
If you think that's attacking thats your opinion and I have mine.

My god daughter slept on a mattress on the floor until she was 5. Her parents are very well off - it was a Montessori thing and also because she was scared to fall out of her 'big bed' when small and transferring to her own room. So they put the bed frame in the attic until she was more confident.

In fact I've got to get my 2 yo out of our room ASAP and am considering doing the same with him as he's a wild sleeper! Much less of a bump when only 6 inches of mattress to fall from to get to the floor :)

I think it's not a big deal and not detrimental to the child at all.

FlappyValley · 23/02/2023 23:01

Thanks @Solittletimeforwine

@Housefullofcatsandkids my DC (also ND) would love that too!

DGS is nearly 3. He's never had a Moses basket or a crib or a cot. In the day he contact naps on his DM and at night they co-sleep on a mattress on the floor and have done since birth. There is no plan to buy him a bed any time soon. Apparently this all ties in with the style of parenting she has chosen to adopt.

Meanwhile, his DF has the marital bed all to himself, but that's another can of worms.

namechangeforthisbleep · 23/02/2023 23:02

What's the difference tho?

It is unusual to have a bed yourself and not buy them for your children. I would want to make sure the flooring was pretty clean tbh!

CatsTheWayToDoIt · 23/02/2023 23:04

Ok my daughter has this, but in my defence it’s very trendy! I gave her bunk bed away on marketplace and she’s put a chiffon floaty thing hanging down from ceiling over her mattress - she loves it. I’m planning on putting a double bed in her room for when we have guests, but we’ve agreed we’ll wait until Christmas so she can have her floor bed for a bit first.

Am I the only person who thinks it's weird the OP has not only inspected the bedrooms of her DC's friends, but their parent's bedrooms too??

Christ, that'd give me the heebie jeebies if my kid's friends parents did that! 🙈

I doubt she has crept round them on her own… children often want to show you their rooms or toys in them when you visit, I don’t think it’s odd at all
