To be surprised these children don’t have proper beds?

Out of DC’s friends whose houses we’ve visited, I’ve seen three who don’t have proper beds, just a mattress on the floor. I’m really surprised because these aren’t poor families by any means (professional jobs, foreign holidays, nice clothes, etc) and the parents all have beds themselves! AIBU to think a bed is one of the most basic things you’d buy your child if your standard of living is generally good? Or is this totally normal?

All children should have a proper bed. I don't care how trendy it is to sleep on the floor.

SS would be all over a WC family if their children didn't have a proper bed.

nonsense, a mattress is a perfectly adequate bed. I have many times in my life has a mattress on the floor for several years, no difference what so ever to having a mattress on a bed frame,

my children went from cots to floor mattresses for several years, as has happened in my family for generations,

The only advantage a bed has had for me as a young adult is storage space underneath

As an older adult, I find getting in and out easier, but still sleep on the floor regularly, when we have visitors, or are visiting somewhere else, on a blow up mattress normally

Wait until you discover "to the floor" beds for adults with additional needs, to stop them falling out of a regular ned. That will blow your mind!

Mine had floor beds, my youngest is 21 so It's not a new thing, we just didn't fancy them injuring themselves if they fell out. They had raised beds from about 8.

Ha, I guess showing guests round the house (not exactly “inspecting” 🤔) isn’t the done thing then?

I have never, in 40 years of having my own house, taken any guest, close friend or otherwise, to look at my bedroom. And I have never been invited to look at anyone else's bedroom. I must lead a sheltered life.

BertaHoon · 23/02/2023 23:50

I quite like a mattress on the floor. These days though, rolling about like a whale trying to get up and the fear of spiders puts me off.

It does make a room look a lot bigger.

BertaHoon · 23/02/2023 23:51

I would probably go for a low futon type though if we were to do this. For daughter I mean. I need my bed bum height now 🤣

Verbena17 · 23/02/2023 23:52

I’ve always been a pretty poor sleeper.
However, out of the few amazing nights sleep I’ve had in my 40+ years, the best were when we were moving military quarters and always had a mattress on the floor after the first packing day, and the bed frames had been taken down.

I’d be more worried if the kiddos didn’t have a mattress or had filthy bedding, but not that worried if there’s just no bed frame.

OutofEverything · 23/02/2023 23:52

It is not a floor bed. It is a mattress on the floor.

InsertMoniker · 23/02/2023 23:52

I think people are very narrow-minded. A comfortable, healthy, warm and safe place to sleep is required, but a bed frame is not. If social workers are thick enough to judge on that there's no hope

Exactly

katepilar · 23/02/2023 23:54

Some people like sleeping on the floor. Also if the children are little/small, its practical.

Exactly again

Weallhaveavoice · 23/02/2023 23:59

we had raised beds
we moved house
got rid of the beds and bought double mattresses for all 3 children.
Have been looking for some antique beds for 2 years now but boys have all said they prefer to be near the floor,
We have always slept on a mattress on the floor, Used to have a futon at one time but dont even bother with that these days

Its not necessarily a financial choice

I doubt she has crept round them on her own… children often want to show you their rooms or toys in them when you visit, I don’t think it’s odd at all

Their parents rooms though??

Nah 😂

QueenCamilla · 24/02/2023 00:00

I slept on a huge mattress on the floor (with a John Lewis headboard for the class points) for two years recently. Everything else was low to the ground too. It made my low-ceiling rental look spacious and 70s retro cool.

No mould. And no creaky springs or banging when... Banging. Highly recommended! 😁

QueenCamilla · 24/02/2023 00:03

My 9yo just slept in a sleeping bag on the floor. It's a treat for a good week at school 😀

Have you never been in a friend’s bedroom when you visit their house??? Given a tour when they move in, come and have a look at my new dressing table, no? These are all totally normal things

anunlikelyseahorse · 24/02/2023 00:05

I remember before profiling hospital beds were a thing, dementia patients were occasionally nursed on a mattress on the floor.
Can't get worked up about it, we go camping and just use a camping mat, I have occasionally been tempted swap sleeping arrangements with Ddog when camping, as she has a special camp bed that looks so much more comfy than my thin foam camping roll!

Ponderingwindow · 24/02/2023 00:12

We never put dd in a cot. She went from her bassinet to a mattress on the floor. You just baby-proof the entire space. Floor beds are great.

we did the same in our room when dc was little and only elevated again when it was safe. I admit I quite prefer the elevated bed with my middle age body, but from a parenting and sleep perspective, the floor bed is a win.

QueenCamilla · 24/02/2023 00:15

My mattress on the floor here

ringofrosies · 24/02/2023 00:16

Personally I prefer to have beds but these children aren’t living in squalor with no (or dirty) bed linen on a bare mattress. Maybe the children like it and sleep better like that.

No. Never been any call for going in anyone else's bedroom. I suppose new material possessions aren't a talking point. I did once get taken to look at a friend's new bathroom but only because the fitters had done a shit job and she wanted to get opinions before she complained.

Owlatnight · 24/02/2023 00:18

I thought mattresses on the floor were a no-go because they create damp

I’d say you are quite unusual then. Your new material possessions quip did give me laugh. Could be looking for a book or showing me a problem with damp. I honestly can’t think of a friend’s house I have been in where I haven’t seen their bedroom for one reason or another.

Strawberrydelight78 · 24/02/2023 00:21

There is such a thing as a floor bed. They look like a mattress on the floor but they do actually have a base. Might have been one of those. They don't need a bed guard with them because they are close to the floor.

Just happenstance then. I've seen quite a few bathrooms but no bedrooms.
I'm now wondering why my friends don't let me in their bedrooms.
