Calling all Violet’s / mothers of Violet’s

i had a DD recently and called her Violet. I have struggled since with the name - I like it myself but I worry my lovely DD will be bullied because of a name I gave her - I think this was triggered by a thread I read on mumsnet saying it’s like violent / vile. I’m tying myself in knots worrying I’ve ruined her life and it’ll be all my fault. I’m also in Northern Ireland and the name isn’t as popular here as the U.K. and I worry about regional pronunciation.

if you have a Violet in their teens / are an adult Violet have you been name called or bullied because of your name?

I guess as it’s AIBU (although I’m mainly posting for traffic) AIBU about my babies name.

It’s a lovely name; don’t worry.

How long ago was she born? You sound as though you might be a bit anxious, or fixating. Have you talked to your GP?

My grandmother was called violet, it was on my shortlist if DS had been a girl. I've never heard it looked to vile/violent outside of MN

Great name.

Turnipworkharder · 23/02/2023 22:10

It's a nice name.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 23/02/2023 22:10

WordtoYoMumma · 23/02/2023 22:11

Gorgeous name! My friend has a daughter Violet,.never been associated with Violent or Vile! Although when she was a teenager she decided to go by Lettie. Which I also think is a great name!

TinySaltLick · 23/02/2023 22:11

Due to the proliferation of more interesting and varied names, bullying because of a thing is less prevalent than it was 30 years ago

Maybe someone who works in a school can corroborate

It was on our shortlist of 3 for first child

strawberriesarenot · 23/02/2023 22:12

Would never have thought of those associations. It's a lovely name.

Mum2jenny · 23/02/2023 22:12

Violet is a nice name and I know several youngsters called that. Ignore the others

Streamside · 23/02/2023 22:14

It's a beautiful name, I live in Northern Ireland and I know at least 5 Violet's and they range from babies to an 80 yr old. It's a lovely delicate little name and only makes me think of the flowers. Locally you'll notice that some people will drop the o so they pronounce it like Vilet but that tends to be older people. Enjoy your baby and the name, it's lovely.

Maybebabyno2 · 23/02/2023 22:15

Personally love the name and would have it on my list if my surname wasn't also a colour.

blindmelon123 · 23/02/2023 22:15

I love it!

23Elfie · 23/02/2023 22:16

I know a little Violet she's a lovely little girl and everyone who meets her first time says oh what a lovely name - I wouldn't worry x

AnotherSpare · 23/02/2023 22:17

When I hear Violet I think of bright coloured pretty flowers, never of anything vile.
Here on this site people associate names with things that just doesn't happen in real life.

nurseynursery · 23/02/2023 22:17

Not what you asked but I LOVE it. My imaginary third child is called violet.

Gazelda · 23/02/2023 22:19

I know an 8yo Violet. She's funny, feisty, interesting and extraordinarily lovable. I don't associate any negative word with her.

Babdoc · 23/02/2023 22:20

If she goes on a diet as an adult she can be a shrinking violet… Grin
Nah, it’s a nice name.

Nixynic · 23/02/2023 22:25

Violet was on my shortlist of names for each pregnancy but I was never brave enough to choose it. I do regret not using it every now and again. It’s a beautiful name, still quite unique but everyone has heard of it and knows how to spell it.

wheeltrims · 23/02/2023 22:30

I have a nine year old Violet and still absolutely love her name. Never ever been an issue with bullying or anything of the like due to her name or anything else. She's feisty too and loves being called Violet. Her friends call her Vee.
I chose it because it's colourful and pretty, not overtly popular (more so now probably then when we named her) but not so unusual it's unheard of.

wheeltrims · 23/02/2023 22:32

... I also have a friend from NI and the way he pronounces her name is lovely

toastofthetown · 23/02/2023 22:32

I don’t have any children, much less children called Violet, but children aren’t bullied because of their names. A confident popular child will have no trouble regardless of what their name is, and a bullied child can have any name turned against them, no matter how innocuous seeming. Sarah was one of the most popular names when I was at school, and most wouldn’t say it was an obvious target for bullying, but that didn’t stop one girl being known as Psycho Sarah throughout high school.

willowrose30 · 23/02/2023 22:33

We have a Violet. Vivi for short.
She is always complimented on her name. A family member did mention the Violet/Violent association before she was born and it did play on my mind for awhile.
Ultimately we did choose the name and have zero regrets.

It doesn't cross my mind at all now and honestly can't see it being an issue when she's older.

Prettybutdumb · 23/02/2023 22:34

We have a little Violet in DD’s school, such a lovely name!
