Calling all Violet’s / mothers of Violet’s

i had a DD recently and called her Violet. I have struggled since with the name - I like it myself but I worry my lovely DD will be bullied because of a name I gave her - I think this was triggered by a thread I read on mumsnet saying it’s like violent / vile. I’m tying myself in knots worrying I’ve ruined her life and it’ll be all my fault. I’m also in Northern Ireland and the name isn’t as popular here as the U.K. and I worry about regional pronunciation.

if you have a Violet in their teens / are an adult Violet have you been name called or bullied because of your name?

I guess as it’s AIBU (although I’m mainly posting for traffic) AIBU about my babies name.

Hi OP- I don’t have a DD called Violet but I’ve always admired the name- I think it’s absolutely beautiful and has connotations of a very happy, bubbly, lovely person- sort of like a Violet flower I suppose! It’s a lovely name and I’m going to call my first DD it :) whilst it’s not a hugely common name, it’s definitely gaining in popularity. I see it as being in the same catagory as Maisy, Daisy, Milly, Pheobe- all absolutely adorable names! :)

the reality is any name can be changed to sound like something else. I’m a Becki, and have been called Sweaty Becki, Specky Becki, necky becki (that doesn’t even make any sense!). Kids will find silly nicknames no matter how far fetched it is. So you may as well give your daughter a beautiful name and the confidence to go with it :)

Kitcaterpillar · 23/02/2023 22:58

It's a lovely name.

Don't worry, I've seen my DDs name called 'absolutely disgusting' and 'fucking ridiculous' and my name 'only good for a Labrador' on the naming threads. Don't take them to heart.

Wow, rude! Sonny is cute!

My oh was dead set on it since we first started trying (took 13 years). It’s his family name. I got a little bit of satisfaction on the nasty pp’s as I was upset enough to do some digging, and found 2 of the nastiest ones had named their dc’s on similar threads whose in my language translated to ugly head and crooked nose 😂
@baxtersm where do you think the typo is, sorry?

Backy · 23/02/2023 23:01

@Ihatethenewlook i think the question of the typo is the fact you very casually said in your first post that you have killed a girl called Violet.

I’ve seen loads of those horrible posts. Im
guessing along the lines of Rosie, Millie, Roxy, daisy etc? All beautiful names that were copied off humans!

icanneverthinkofnc · 23/02/2023 23:06

MN is a weird place over names. Violet was due a return. Those of us slightly older would just have a smile and ask if the middle name is Elizabeth. It's probably lost on younger mums though. 😉

Thetigerateit · 23/02/2023 23:08

I don’t think ‘Vile violet’ would really stick as a school insult, it sounds much too posh and silly somehow.

Mariposista · 23/02/2023 23:09

It's a beautiful name. A lot of names can be made to sound like something negative if you really put your mind to it, but I would never make the connection between Violet and Violent. I'd just think of lovely brightly coloured flowers!

That's exactly how it read to me too.

I love Violet - beautiful name.

I meant by me as in location. Are people that obtuse on here that they’d rather pretend that I just posted that I killed a little girl, rather than meant that she’d died by where I was? It’s a bit sad that they couldn’t work it out. Pretty much proves my point that people on here love to jump to the nastiest conclusion to make you feel like shit.

cherish123 · 23/02/2023 23:11

I like it. It's becoming more popular. Mu great-grandmother was one.

PurpleButterflyWings · 23/02/2023 23:11

@Ihatethenewlook

I haven’t seen any of those threads. I think violet's lovely. It’s a little bittersweet for me as it reminds me of a little girl who was killed by me a couple years ago. I had the misfortune of admitting on here I had a son called sonny. I had 4 full pages of the most vilest comments you would imagine over what I thought was a perfectly normal and lovely name.

I know you meant a little girl called Violet was killed, and she lived near you, but what a stellar typo!!! Shock 😆

I knew what you meant @Ihatethenewlook Flowers Don't worry. 😘

In my case no and no.
Quite easy to work out but it did initially read oddly.
Didn't mean to upset you though, although you obviously meant to cause upset with your "sad" comment.

imnotthatkindofmum · 23/02/2023 23:16

I've taught a couple of violets (secondary) no one ever commented on their name, never bullied. I think it's lovely, unusual but not in a weird way

LaMarschallin · 23/02/2023 23:20

Ihatethenewlook

Are you Welsh, btw?
I'm from Wales and "by me" instead of "near me" is quite usual there, I know.

GrettaGreen · 23/02/2023 23:21

I never knew to I read this thread that the o was pronounced! I'm from NI originally and to today thought the o was silent Blush.

Both pronunciations are lovely.

Backy · 23/02/2023 23:22

Ohhhh! Yeah I read it and re-read trying to figure out what you meant. Now you’ve explained I see what you meant, but it didn’t click. I thought perhaps you’d meant to type nearby or something which I guess is kind of what you meant. Anyway I’m not sad thank you!

pleaseandthankyou45 · 23/02/2023 23:34

What? No don't worry

MumofSpud · 23/02/2023 23:47

My DD's middle name is Violet but it really makes me Confused when you get posters saying that a name reminds me of a word and the link is so tenuous - example
Reuben is like rubbish
Lila is like lie about
Veronica is like verucca

I think we, as adults, over think!

NoEscapingMe · 23/02/2023 23:55

It's an utterly beautiful name. It was my Nana's name.and she was a truly special human being. It's lovely.

Mamai90 · 23/02/2023 23:58

OP I'm in NI too and I think it's a beautiful that isn't over used here. I've honestly never heard or thought of any connections between the name and vile or violent until I came on here. I did consider it for DD but we really wanted an Irish name and that's the reason we didn't go for it in the end. You've given her a beautiful name so don't be hard on yourself!

M103 · 24/02/2023 00:28

Lovely name, only reminds me of flowers.

RubbishAtEverything · 24/02/2023 00:40

Violet is one of my favourite ever names! I was going to call my youngest Violet if he was a girl.

It's an absolutely beautiful name!

Yes this is the typo! At least I was hoping it was one
