Calling all Violet’s / mothers of Violet’s

i had a DD recently and called her Violet. I have struggled since with the name - I like it myself but I worry my lovely DD will be bullied because of a name I gave her - I think this was triggered by a thread I read on mumsnet saying it’s like violent / vile. I’m tying myself in knots worrying I’ve ruined her life and it’ll be all my fault. I’m also in Northern Ireland and the name isn’t as popular here as the U.K. and I worry about regional pronunciation.

if you have a Violet in their teens / are an adult Violet have you been name called or bullied because of your name?

I guess as it’s AIBU (although I’m mainly posting for traffic) AIBU about my babies name.

Ignore MN, there are posters that love to come up with the most absurdly stupid connections in order to mock a name.

I’ve nannied in London for over 15y, I have known ALOT of Violets and not once has anyone, adult or child, ever made the connection of vile/violent.

it’s a beautiful name and congratulations!

I'm in NI and love the name Violet. I know 2 of Primary age but both are in England, but I think it's becoming more popular in NI now

Usernameisunavailable · 23/02/2023 22:36

It’s a pretty name. People come up with some very odd comments on Mumsnet sometimes. Don’t worry about it.

Ihatethenewlook · 23/02/2023 22:37

I haven’t seen any of those threads. I think violets lovely. It’s a little bittersweet for me as it reminds me of a little girl who was killed by me a couple years ago. I had the misfortune of admitting on here I had a son called sonny. I had 4 full pages of the most vilest comments you would imagine over what I thought was a perfectly normal and lovely name.

PermanentlyinUAT · 23/02/2023 22:37

It’s a beautiful name, OP.

PurpleButterflyWings · 23/02/2023 22:38

Don't worry, people always find a reason to take the piss out of peoples names, no matter what it is. Violet is quite a sweet name. BUT, if you are really worried, could you give her a bit of a nickname/change it slightly? Say a nickname like Letty??? My friend's mother was called Violet, and they called her Letty.

Fairislefandango · 23/02/2023 22:38

Lovely name. I am a teacher and there are several Violets in my school. All seem perfectly popular and I've never heard anyone call them any silly version of their name or nickname related to their name.

Wow, rude! Sonny is cute!

WaltzingWaters · 23/02/2023 22:41

It’s a beautiful name. Don’t worry about it at all.

Sargentpeanutbutter · 23/02/2023 22:42

I grew up in NI with a Violet who was a horrible nasty bully and certainly not delicate in any way ! Hopefully your violet will be the opposite. I also know a lovely 'Vi' 😁

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/02/2023 22:42

It's a beautiful name. My beloved Nanna was Violet and she was the kindest, loveliest person ❤️

AcrobaticCardigan · 23/02/2023 22:44

Violet is a gorgeous name! Really lovely. I’ve never heard or imagined any negative connotations.

TwooTwitt · 23/02/2023 22:45

I have a Viola who was very nearly Violet! We call her Vivi but her school friends call her "V" so she prefers that these days.

Never had any indication that it's disliked or caused her problems. The girl in her year who has a name issue is called Clare- she gets called Clare the Bear (for some reason) and hates it. So you just never know.

Wavesandsand · 23/02/2023 22:45

Violet is lovely and I think it's particularly lovely in a NI accent. Lettie is also a lovely nickname.

You can pick fault in pretty much every name if you want. 'Scarlett' starts with scar, Grace can be mistyped as Grave, Amelia is a disease, Lily rhymes with willy etc, etc, etc.

Violet is beautiful. I don't have a Violet, but it was on the list and it's the only one 10 years later that i have regrets over. Dd who was nearly a Violet (and knows that) wants a future dd named Violet.

LulooLemon · 23/02/2023 22:47

Gorgeous name

JustMaggie · 23/02/2023 22:48

It's a beautiful name, please don't worry OP

Is there an unfortunate typo here? I'm hoping so anyway

VioletPickles · 23/02/2023 22:51

I have a Violet and she loves her name. Never any bullying or mean comments .

baxtersm · 23/02/2023 22:51

I love the name and I'm from NI.

Potaytocrisps · 23/02/2023 22:52

I'm from NI, I really like the name Violet and think it's classic but not fusty, but yes there are people at home who will pronounce it Vile-it, the same people who say Nile for Niall or Cathern for Catherine. If you say it like that, please stop!
But it would annoy me hearing others say the name, Amelia is such a pretty name but then a relative said it in Belfast accent and totally put me off. In England you can change the name until the baby is one year old, not sure if it is the same in NI?
Not saying you should change the name but if there's another name you love look into it.

Gardenerboo · 23/02/2023 22:53

I have a teen Violet. Never been bullied about her name. Only ever had compliments.

MuchasSmoochas · 23/02/2023 22:54

From NI, don’t know any Violets and I think it’s a beautiful name OP. It’s a forgotten classic 🥰

Lilyyy · 23/02/2023 22:54

My DD’s middle name is Violet, after my great nan who was called Violet. It’s a beautiful name.

Jellybean23 · 23/02/2023 22:55

Violet doesn't have any negative connotations for me, it's a lovely name. My mum's friend was called Violet, Vi for short (rhymes with 'my'). Don't waste your time worrying, you have made a bad choice.

Viviennemary · 23/02/2023 22:55

Nonsense. Its a really nice name. One of my favourite names.
