DP thinks my bag is 'childish and showy'

I'm originally from Sweden and back home people of all ages carry these bags. Last week, I decided to purchase a new KÃ¥nken to replace the one I've had for 10 years. Picked this colour (www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/kanken/kanken-bags/kanken-rainbow-mini?v=F23621%3a%3a7323450792466) this time around to replace the black one I had, and DH absolutely hates it. I use it primarily for dog walks and trips to the local cafe/shops and he thinks it's too showy/childish and feels 'embarrassed' when I take it with me when we go out for coffee together. Confused

AIBU to think that it's just a bag? It's not that bad, is it?

The bright yellow one is a bit ‘I’m zany me! I would make a great kids tv presenter’.

I have to agree, but surely he knows what your style is by now?

Tontostitis · 24/02/2023 05:32

It's a bit grim tbf. can't you just use it when you're on your own? If my dh hated something I would just wear it when I wasn't with him, electric blue leopard print dress I'm thinking of you.

emptythelitterbox · 24/02/2023 05:38

I hope you mention to him that the impact of you having that bag on him is zero.

Ask him how much he remembers about any random stranger. I'm betting nothing.

Showed him this thread and he has grudgingly accepted that this will be my version of his five toed shoes — other party hates it but it's there to stay. Grin

Oh they are so much more "look at me" than your bag. You win

pictoosh · 24/02/2023 06:02

Makes me wonder if he was one of those wee dicks you get at school…the ones who go about publicly humiliating other kids for being different. Why else would he be embarrassed by and make an issue of a yellow bag? He says your bag is childish but that’s exactly how he’s behaving. Fearful of the judgement of others over pathetic things, like a 14 yr old.

emmetgirl · 24/02/2023 06:04

I'd be astonished if my DP had any opinion about any of my bags. Why did yours think you'd be interested in his?

kateandme · 24/02/2023 06:26

i often look at children clothes and think i really think they need to make these things in adult sizes!
who gives a shit.
and why does this men your with continue to make you feel like shit over a fucking bag.your bag. he needs to get over HIS insecurities to be who he wants to be that he is projecting onto you.
carry on.
where whatever colour you want.
that sqaure shape are very in at the moment too.joules white stuff boden they are all doing them.for way beyond my budget but still.
id say someone here is acting like a child and its not you.

HoodieBell · 24/02/2023 06:26

Maybe you could offer to distract attention from it by wearing a neon pink tutu and a tiara with a dildo motif...

Your husband sounds utterly pathetic. I'm a hiker so I wear a bag made with that reflective silver material, wearing brightly coloured bags keeps you safe, especially in winter.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/02/2023 06:28

If he says you're childish...

put your hands to your head touching your thumbs to your temples,
open your hands so you look a bit like a moose and waggle your fingers
and stick your tongue out.

Even better if you can do this in a restaurant.

kateandme · 24/02/2023 06:29

this morning featured the new jelly cat bags today. he would have had a stroke!

Me too

It's a shame because I love rainbows but they seem to have been hijacked. I used to be on a zero waste FB group a few years back and someone used a rainbow background for one of their posts and ended up being vilified for "appropriating the pride flag" along with the fact they asked the "ladies" of the group about eco friendly period products because apparently not only ladies have periods you know! I left the group after that. Anyway sorry OP I am hijacking your bag thread.

AnotherSuperHeroe · 24/02/2023 07:09

Wonder what your DO would think of the LoungeFly range then! And my husband buys me ones that he knows I really want!

absolutely nothing wrong with your bag btw, he needs to get over himself

GoodChat · 24/02/2023 07:11

If he wears 5 toed shoes he's not allowed to comment on anyone's fashion choices, ever ever Grin

Wearing rainbows will probably mean some folk assume you are gay as this happens to my adult DC and her mates.
I think everyone can claim the rainbow as their own though.

Gapmumma · 24/02/2023 07:22

I meant homophobic.
As rainbows are commonly associated as a pride symbol I think this is why he is actually finding issue

Theraffarian · 24/02/2023 07:23

It’s not for me , and out of context I would think it was a fairly cheap child’s bag , however I have one of these which I love , so what do I know Bag

I knew what you meant, but it's a hell of a reach...
More likely he wonders why his partner is toting round a toddlers bag.

StaceySolomonSwash · 24/02/2023 07:32

It's cheerful. You've only got one shot at life so if you want a bright bag you go for it!

Whatever makes you happy, as long as it doesn't adversely impact on someone else's health or happiness is ok with me. 😊

My God, those things creep me out. 😂

CrystalCoco · 24/02/2023 07:40

I can sympathise with your partner, it's one hell of a fugly bag - and in bright yellow...

My DH loves garish colours and I've learned just to turn a blind eye as he's an adult and can wear whatever he likes, but some days 🙄

Plus (maybe you're the same) it often appears attention seeking

Monstermoomoo · 24/02/2023 07:42

If you marry a Swede, KÃ¥nken bags are surely to be expected!

LaPassegiata · 24/02/2023 07:47

I think some people must never leave the suburbs with their identikit mumclothes and workwear.

I have seen these bags all over London, in every colour and on every age. It’s amusing how shocked people are by it!

Bright colours can be great. It’s a bit cliched, unimaginative and pretentious to equate neutral with stylish.

Anyway, if my husband criticised my bag I would be more likely to take it absolutely everywhere.

Absolutely this!!

Tell him you have the bag to distract attention from his feet!!!
