How much for an Easter egg!!!????

Off work sick at the moment and looking through my post. Junk mail from Hotel Chocolat advertising Easter eggs at £86 each. I am definitely a grumpy old hag and I know I don't have to buy one but seriously 😳. Is it just me that finds this crazy and a total waste of money??

Before I answer, I want to know how much chocolate is in that.

Here's a hand-painted one in Fortnum's for £100. www.fortnumandmason.com/hand-painted-chick-easter-egg-500g

Extravagance is the Fairy Godmother of the economy. It’s not for the masses, it’s for the few. It’d be nice, though, eh? And there’s a Hotel Chocolat outlet near me so I’ll grab one for £15 in October 😂

Endofmytether1 · 23/02/2023 15:11

It's a kilo of chocolate but it just feels weird/wrong somehow and I am speaking as a greedy chocoholic - you can buy that but can't get tomatoes or cucumbers and so many people using food banks.
The Fortnum and Mason one is at least very pretty but omg at £1per 5g I will stick to a Freddo!

Tomatoes and cucumbers are being restricted because adverse weather damaged the harvest, not because people can’t afford them.

Verynice1 · 23/02/2023 15:19

Even in the supermarkets I have noticed large eggs for £8 upwards. What happened to the £1 ones you used to be able to get in Asda?

TheFlis12345 · 23/02/2023 15:20

Tesco have loads for £1.25 each.

You can't get tomatoes or cucumbers because of the weather. What does that have to do with Easter eggs?

TheFlis12345 · 23/02/2023 15:23

I don’t really understand the point of this thread, it’s like saying why buy a Porsche when you can get a Ford Fiesta much cheaper? Or why buy a designer handbag when you can get one in Primark? Some people have more money and decide to spend it on fancy things, that’s hardly new news.

Endofmytether1 · 23/02/2023 15:25

I don't think it's just the weather, more a mixture of factors.... UK producers can't afford to pay cost of heating greenhouses, transport etc, Brexit makes importing goods more expensive and requires more paperwork.

Bubblebubblebah · 23/02/2023 15:25

It's not just egg. It also comes with pralines etc.
Kilo of better chocolate and this viraty. It's not actually THAT bad price

Same issue in Ireland. It's mainly down to cold weather in Spain.

My mam's got us all one of the 1KG Lindt bunnies this year, because she's barmy. Apparently she's picked them up from some website for a tenner each though so god only knows what we'll end up with, Lindt Gerbils or something perhaps.

Endofmytether1 · 23/02/2023 15:27

It's not news, just seems so profligate. I feel the same about designer handbags though.

I have to ask.
Do people genuinely believe that no better or pricier products should be sold and everything should be samey and samey price?
I mean... Different people like different things and can afford different things. No need for the moan about "but some people can't even buy x"

Endofmytether1 · 23/02/2023 15:34

I think the point I am making then is that there is such a disparity between rich and poor. It feels sad to live in a society where some people can spend that on chocolate when many people have to choose between heating and eating, or go without food in order to feed their children. It troubles me

An Easter Egg is supposed to be special, celebratory, outside of the everyday.

Like a wedding dress, or wedding cake or birthday present, or bouquet of flowers. A bit of a special one-off.

Surely people don’t buy Easter eggs in an attempt to get value for money?

Whitney168 · 23/02/2023 15:43

Is it just me who quite wants to order one of these eggs now ... ? 😂

Endofmytether1 · 23/02/2023 15:44

Anyway, one good thing about this thread is that it's reminded me that last year I went to the shops too late and the shelves were bare. I shall now stop lazing around and go and buy my Easter eggs 😉

£86!! I was in tesco the other day and saw a lindt one for £15 and i thought that was extortion.

beguilingeyes · 23/02/2023 15:50

I am reminded of the Easter just after we went into lockdown. Waitrose near my work had enormous amounts of Easter eggs they couldn't shift. They were practically giving them away. I took full advantage.

£86 really isn’t expensive for something nice though.

I think you hit the nail on the head with ‘miserable hag’

That has nothing to do with expensive Easter eggs bit with 2 things
1-human nature
2-who you all keep voting in!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/02/2023 16:01

But why single out HC?

Lots of shops sell lots of things for lots of money, that lots of people can't afford.

Look how much the average MN approved Diptythingy candle costs?

Some of them cost more than that Easter egg and all you do with those is set fire to them. You don't even get any chocolate to eat.

There's likely to be loads left in the sale and outlet shops after Easter so you'll probably be able to get one for less than half price at some point.

Oh to live in your world.
