Off work sick at the moment and looking through my post. Junk mail from Hotel Chocolat advertising Easter eggs at £86 each. I am definitely a grumpy old hag and I know I don't have to buy one but seriously 😳. Is it just me that finds this crazy and a total waste of money??

Even in the supermarkets I have noticed large eggs for £8 upwards. What happened to the £1 ones you used to be able to get in Asda?

Morrisons have them cheap at the moment

Before I answer, I want to know how much chocolate is in that.

Here's a hand-painted one in Fortnum's for £100. www.fortnumandmason.com/hand-painted-chick-easter-egg-500g

That chick will peck your eyes out if you try to eat it.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/02/2023 17:22

I always buy a really expensive, fancy egg

Don't go out/don't go on holiday/just get a couple of books for Christmas

It's my major treat for the year and I had the green floral painted one from Bettys last year - was £40, it was WONDERFUL

Mamamia7962 · 23/02/2023 17:24

I don't see the problem really, if someone has £86 to spend on an Easter egg that's no one else's business. There's always been rich and poor people and that is never going to change. Everyone has different priorities of what is essential to them. There was a thread on here once where someone was moaning about not being able to afford to put their heating on but she was happy to spend something like £60 a month on pet insurance!

CPL593H · 23/02/2023 17:34

Sometimes it isn't about wasting money or (eggs)travagance but priorities. Very unwell DH, no holidays/meals out etc for years, all v difficult. I try to mark the "special" events a bit more lavishly than I might otherwise with expensive/special food, gifts etc from eg Fortnums (even though the last 2 Christmases, an Easter and a couple of birthdays have involved much input from the NHS emergency services, I try)

It's not just egg. It also comes with pralines etc.
Kilo of better chocolate and this viraty. It's not actually THAT bad price

Hi, egg

HerRoyalNotness · 23/02/2023 18:28

I’d like to buy some of their smaller ones but the bastards have withdrawn from the US market. Yet to find a replacement. I was going yo try a chocolatier in the town near me but they wanted $18 for shipping on top of the astounding price of the chocolate

sad times

I normally get the £30 one. That’s probably also obscene to many.

Anyway I have realised I like the idea and the appearance more than the taste. Am sticking with a galaxy minstrels one this year.

I agree with that.

Her pets come first.......albeit they may be a bit chilly!

Am I the only person who doesn’t like hotel chocolate?
I thought it would be lovely but I was actually very disappointed when I finally tried it.
I actually prefer cheap Aldi chocolate.

SnottyLottie · 23/02/2023 20:23

Those Fortnum & Mason ones are too stunning to eat

SpookyBlackCat · 24/02/2023 00:17

I live abroad and I recently spent around 50 pounds (including postage) on an order of Easter chocolate from British Cornershop. It’s just things like crème eggs and mini eggs, but I’m really eggcited!! It’s a lot of money but sometimes it’s nice to have a treat. I really miss crème eggs!

I think the point I am making then is that there is such a disparity between rich and poor. It feels sad to live in a society where some people can spend that on chocolate when many people have to choose between heating and eating, or go without food in order to feed their children. It troubles me

For christ's sake, havexanother pop at the 'rich'. Take a look at who spends most at times such as easter or christmas. You see people who 'look poor' with trollies stuffed to the gills with stuff 'they cannot possibly afford', and 'rich people' with barely a hals-cucumber in their baskets.
I don't really eat chocolate, but will save to buy a tiny bar of a v expensivexstuff because I enjoy the treat, I don't have to stuff my face with a kilo bar
Easter eggs are and always have bedn a con. But try, if you mind can stretch that far, to consider how chocolate and consequently, easter eggs is grown, harvested, transported, processed, packed and transported. And you want all that for axquid.
Would you consider your output to be worth only £1

Bubblebubblebah · 24/02/2023 07:38

Can anyone say where rich starts? Because for me rich starts at millionaire level, like 2+mil networth?
I feel like this price isn't particularly in rich person brackets, considering my not even 5% of the above networth arse could easily afford it.

londonrach · 24/02/2023 07:42

Hotel chocolate is yuk anyway. Too bitter with nasty after taste. Morrisons doing small Easter eggs for 75p.

No you not. Think it's the worse chocolate I ever tasted. The best is from a little shop in brugges but can't get there easily. Hotel chocolate has a very nasty aftertaste but think it's abit like this prime craze... However everyone likes different things so maybe some people like the nasty aftertaste.

Havanananana · 24/02/2023 07:57

Aren't people supposed to work harder and do extra shifts so that they can afford to wrap a turnip in cooking foil and pretend it's a £86 Easter egg?

User158432907 · 24/02/2023 08:12

I quite like Hotel Chocolate, I usually pop on during the sales and buy it when its half price, should be a sale soon with Mothers Day and Easter so will order a variety then.

ImAvingOops · 24/02/2023 08:28

£100 for a white chocolate egg from Fortnum&Masons? No thanks. For that money it should be milk chocolate!

I agree with the OP - for most people £86 is a mad amount of money for a chocolate egg. I wouldn't even pay £15 now - I have 4 kids and a dil and I'm not spending the equivalent of a food shop on chocolate, even if I can afford it!
Mind, I don't by Diptyque (sp?) candles either.

For around a fiver, you can get a big bar of marabou chocolate from Amazon, which is the nicest chocolate imo.

Luoisa · 24/02/2023 08:38

£86 does seem insane for an Easter egg. But we are not very big on Easter in our family. A little egg and job done. So could never imagine spending this on an egg, although I am intrigued by it and it does look amazing I've just been nosing at it.
