How much for an Easter egg!!!????

Endofmytether1 · 23/02/2023 14:58

Off work sick at the moment and looking through my post. Junk mail from Hotel Chocolat advertising Easter eggs at £86 each. I am definitely a grumpy old hag and I know I don't have to buy one but seriously 😳. Is it just me that finds this crazy and a total waste of money??

Even in the supermarkets I have noticed large eggs for £8 upwards. What happened to the £1 ones you used to be able to get in Asda?

They are now £1.25 but smaller

I think the point I am making then is that there is such a disparity between rich and poor. It feels sad to live in a society where some people can spend that on chocolate when many people have to choose between heating and eating, or go without food in order to feed their children. It troubles me

Theres always going to be and always has been a disparity between rich and poor.

Even in communist and socialist countries there is disparity to a greater or lesser degree

LucyLeave · 23/02/2023 16:19

HC is overrated anyway.

'£86 really isn’t expensive for something nice though'

Oh to live in your world.

I’d hate to live in a world where you cry over £86 tbh

User158432907 · 23/02/2023 16:21

It's no more waste of money though than expensive alcohol, champagne to me is a waste of money because I don't like it, it's a present or a celebration, not the weekly shop. Meals out are expensive too.

Dahlietta · 23/02/2023 16:22

Those aren't their standard eggs though. Those are expensive, but nothing like £86. I always got the impression those were for sharing (but would happily eat one by myself).

Bollindger · 23/02/2023 16:23

75p half price at Morrison's.
I got loads the other day.
More than enough for a treat.

Shortbread49 · 23/02/2023 16:24

There Is a hotel chocolate outlet near me after Easter they are all half price or less

I’d rather eat mud than the palm-oil filled non-chocolate muck that you get for 75p. 🤮

LadyOfTheCanyon · 23/02/2023 16:28

Meh. I'm lucky enough to be able to afford one should I want one ( I don't, I'm a martyr to cheap chocolate) but I also give to food banks and charity, haven't voted for the Tories in my life, voted remain etc etc.
I'm certainly not going to abstain on some kind of fundamental principle.

£86 really isn’t expensive for something nice though.

I think you hit the nail on the head with ‘miserable hag’

Ouch!! I am willing to bet that £86 would be considered a lot to spend on an Easter egg by the majority of people and , judging by the votes , I am correct.

Chump change; Betty's will do you one for £375 if you ask nicely.

It's is a lot to spend on chocolate but no more so than spending on flowers, champagne and stuff like that, myself I prefer the chocolate and wouldn't mind one myself.

It troubles me too, it sums up the inequality in this Country really I suppose. And greediness in general grates on me anyway.

An Easter Egg is supposed to be special, celebratory, outside of the everyday.

Like a wedding dress, or wedding cake or birthday present, or bouquet of flowers. A bit of a special one-off.

Surely people don’t buy Easter eggs in an attempt to get value for money?

Easter eggs are hardly a special one off. It comes every year and it's just going to get eaten. Hardly the same as a wedding.
£86 is a stupid amount of money to spend on an Easter egg. Some people have more money than sense.

Rebel2 · 23/02/2023 16:39

These aren't cheap but you get loads of chocolate and it's lovely
Worth watching for their sales too!

Why can't anyone have anything nice anymore or go on holiday or do anything on here that might cost more than someone else has, apart from the property board that is.

xogossipgirlxo · 23/02/2023 16:42

It's 1kg though, lot of chocolate 😅I never had such an expensive eggs, only cheap ones like cadbury.

BluebellBlueballs · 23/02/2023 16:44

Endofmytether1 · 23/02/2023 15:11

It's a kilo of chocolate but it just feels weird/wrong somehow and I am speaking as a greedy chocoholic - you can buy that but can't get tomatoes or cucumbers and so many people using food banks.
The Fortnum and Mason one is at least very pretty but omg at £1per 5g I will stick to a Freddo!

There's been rich people buying expensive weird shit since forever.

I saw a TV programme where someone was spending 50k on a Christmas tree decoration once. That was for ONE decoration.

Grumpybutfunny · 23/02/2023 16:46

Whitney168 · 23/02/2023 15:43

Is it just me who quite wants to order one of these eggs now ... ? 😂

Nope I'm thinking the same 😬 to be fair I normally spend more than that when I add up the eggs, chocolate selection etc for the adult table!

User158432907 · 23/02/2023 16:49

i would quite like one, the chocolates look nice that come with it

PortiasBiscuit · 23/02/2023 16:49

If it’s not Dairy Milk I’m really not very interested.

ronswansonstache · 23/02/2023 16:55

OP I am going to buy one of the £30 ones as a treat for giving up Xmas for lent. I'd never usually spend that much on an Easter egg but it is a special treat & an incentive!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/02/2023 16:56

Why can't anyone have anything nice anymore or go on holiday or do anything on here that might cost more than someone else has, apart from the property board that is.

Oh yes, everyone has to be grovellingly apologetic about having £2.50 available to spend on something non essential but people talk with no humility whatsoever about buying a period detached in the right village in catchment of the right schools and giving all their DC their own bedroom that is spacious enough to accommodate each child in a double bed from age 2.

Just what percentage of the population is this affordable to?

But seriously, most people have some money spare to spend on non essentials so what does it matter what they spend it on. It's all down to choice and we all have different likes and dislikes.

So what does it matter if someone chooses to spend £86 on an Easter egg? They could equally be spending that on a haircut, a candle, face cream, a meal out etc etc. Who's to say that the more expensive versions of these things are objectively any better than the cheap versions.

ronswansonstache · 23/02/2023 17:09

giving up chocolate* for lent
