DS 14 fruit football again....

Hey all,

Original thread (www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4745202-ds-and-mates-playing-football-in-garden?page=1) (for those who haven't seen the original thread, DS 16 and 14 recreated the following)

Here we go again - DS 14 told DH last night that he wants to play football again on the weekend (with fruit) as he did last weekend, however he wants only him and his older brother (DS 16) this time as he didn't get to destroy as much fruit as he wanted and said he really enjoyed him self and wants to try again - see if he can win his brother this time;

DH was in a bit of a hurry last night so told him it'd be fine, however i'm not sure at all as it's a lot of money to spend on fruit over two weeks to do the same activity.

Would it be reasonable for me to stop him this time? They did both leave it clean and tidy last time (and they paid for the fruit too). Don't want to ruin his fun and bonding time with his older brother too either though.

AIBU?

YANBU - stop him from playing and ask him to do another activity
YABU - let him crack on with it and play

I stand by my original vote - it doesn't sit well with me.
The argument that you should be thankful they "only" want to destroy fruit rather than town centres, other people, themselves (drinking and smoking) is a poor one IMO.

There are plenty of activities which can be just as fun which don't involve the wilful waste of food.

Stompythedinosaur · 23/02/2023 11:27

I think you should let them get on with it tbh.

I don't think you'll get a clear answer on your vote as you've allocated YABU and YANBU in the counter intuitive way.

I think YABU and should let them play, but you've asked people to vote YANBU if they disagree with you.

Cherrysoup · 23/02/2023 11:34

Waste of food and tbh, shelves in some supermarkets are empty of fruit. Tell him to watch the news and stop being a pest about it.

LivMumsnet · 23/02/2023 11:36

We've now edited your original post, @SoccerMum1 , as requested. Hope that helps. Smile

Eastereggsboxedupready · 23/02/2023 11:38

I imagine a lot of families would be thankful for so much food...
Surely water bombs would work just as well?

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 23/02/2023 11:40

YABU. If he’s paying for the fruit he can do what he wants with it.

It isn’t his fault that not everyone can afford fruit 🤷‍♀️

Botw1 · 23/02/2023 11:42

Why do you need multiple threads on this?

The whole thing is weird.

Tell him no and that's the end of it.

This ^^ exactly.

It just comes across as a bit goady and attention seeking.

GoodChat · 23/02/2023 11:43

I think it's a one time activity. Don't they have empty coke cans they can knock off the top of the goal or something?

SoccerMum1 · 23/02/2023 11:44

Sorry @DuplicateUserName and @Botw1 - they did play last weekend but DS 14 wants to play himself with just his older brother, again this weekend hence this post

They’ve done it once. You can do the same thing with their old stuffed teddies hanging from the goal etc - same game, less waste!!

Sugarplumfairy65 · 23/02/2023 11:45

What a disgusting waste of food. What kind of lessons are you both teaching your son?
It doesn't matter if its his money and he can afford it. It's shameful

PuttingDownRoots · 23/02/2023 11:46

Multiple threads about fruit and veg shortages.

Bd he just wants to smash it up?

Botw1 · 23/02/2023 11:47

@SoccerMum1

Yes.

I understood that.

I don't understand why you need to consult Mumsnet a second time over a trivial issue.

Make up your own mind.

I wouldn't have let him do it all never mind twice but what I think is irrelevant

Yes, why didn't you just continue your previous thread?

lummsnet · 23/02/2023 11:47

What a waste of good food

cocksstrideintheevening · 23/02/2023 11:48

This is just bizarre.

MuggleMe · 23/02/2023 11:48

I mean, it's about a fivers worth of fruit. I wouldn't mind either way (hopefully the pineapple still edible after!). But equally possible with coke cans etc.

HomeSweetLove · 23/02/2023 11:49

2 threads about kicking a ball at some fruit. 😂 Just let them get on with it.

Are those the values we want to instil in our children?
We can afford to waste food, sod everyone else.

What does it matter? If someone can’t afford the fruit then they aren’t being affected by these kids buying it and using it as they wish.

'Hence the post'

Yeah I think we get why 'hence the post' but you're very transparent in the goady nature of it, given the cost of living crisis etc and I'm sure you know it.

Well that's at best. At worst, you're really asking the internet if you should stop your own kids doing something you don't want them to do?

CrystalCoco · 23/02/2023 11:55

I haven't read your other thread so apologies if this has already been mentioned, but ff the fruit is destroyed / inedible afterwards then it's a no from me.

I can't stand food going to waste and there's enough of that goes on already without deliberately doing so.

GoodChat · 23/02/2023 11:57

They are because supermarkets reduce the price of such foods before they go off, so they might not afford them at full price but be able to enjoy them at a reduced cost.
