DS 14 fruit football again....

SoccerMum1 · 23/02/2023 07:35

Hey all,

Original thread (www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4745202-ds-and-mates-playing-football-in-garden?page=1) (for those who haven't seen the original thread, DS 16 and 14 recreated the following)

Here we go again - DS 14 told DH last night that he wants to play football again on the weekend (with fruit) as he did last weekend, however he wants only him and his older brother (DS 16) this time as he didn't get to destroy as much fruit as he wanted and said he really enjoyed him self and wants to try again - see if he can win his brother this time;

DH was in a bit of a hurry last night so told him it'd be fine, however i'm not sure at all as it's a lot of money to spend on fruit over two weeks to do the same activity.

Would it be reasonable for me to stop him this time? They did both leave it clean and tidy last time (and they paid for the fruit too). Don't want to ruin his fun and bonding time with his older brother too either though.

AIBU?

YANBU - stop him from playing and ask him to do another activity
YABU - let him crack on with it and play

One thread wasn't enough to whip up a froth for you?

If this is real your kids are gross and need some lessons in food poverty.

NamelessTemptress01 · 23/02/2023 12:01

Post on your local Fb group asking if anyone has any fruit on the turn that you can have

Hankunamatata · 23/02/2023 12:04

Perhaps I'm ba humbug but no food should be wasted like that. It would be a big no for me. Not only is it a waste fruit is pricey

Purplehyena · 23/02/2023 12:08

It’d be a no from me, whatever the circumstances. The flagrant food waste is just distasteful for so many reasons (cost of living, shortages, environmental etc). None of those are the kid’s fault of course, but just no. Water balloons, soft toys etc would have just the same (if less instagrammable) effect surely.

This!

SoupDragon · 23/02/2023 12:10

Why on Earth would you let him do something so pointlessly wasteful? Just play actual football and stop wasting food.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/02/2023 12:12

What the fuck is fruit football?

What a waste of food. Entitled and privileged yet despicable all at once.

AnnoyedFromSlough · 23/02/2023 12:14

Seems like a sneaky way to increase youtube views to me.

Oh this.

This ^^ exactly.

It just comes across as a bit goady and attention seeking.

It really does..

lummsnet · 23/02/2023 12:15

Oh this.

Yup

SoccerMum1 · 23/02/2023 12:19

thanks all for the posts - just to clarify a few points

this is an idea they've had from a video they've seen on youtube - they tried it last week (after the majority of the posters on the previous thread said it looked fun, let them do it etc) with some friends, however DS 14 wants to do it with just his older brother this time.

they do understand the importance of food - all the fruit which they purchased was gonna be thrown out by the local grocers anyway so was close to expiry

Just posting here to see what others think - there's a lot worse they could be doing (but a lot better too) - it's which battles do I pick and fight

It's a disgusting waste of food. What kind of lesson are you teaching him. Yes of course you can say, " it's my money, we can afford it." But in our current climate, its disgusting. Like burning £20 notes in front of a homeless person. Many people I know are struggling to afford their groceries, and going to our local food bank.

thaegumathteth · 23/02/2023 12:20

What a bizarre thing to keep posting about

TheOrigRights · 23/02/2023 12:21

So if most people think it's wasteful and wrong will you stop them doing it?
Why can't you make your own mind up?

HowToExplainRight · 23/02/2023 12:22

agree with those saying it's a waste of food.
use water balloons . Or give them a few bottles of cream and see if they can make butter 😂

How do you get through life and parent teens if you have to get mumsnets opinion on this? And twice? 😅

BabyOnBoard90 · 23/02/2023 12:23

Some parts of the world people have no clue when the next meal will be.

Other parts, people discard and play with food like it's a toy.

Brefugee · 23/02/2023 12:23

wanting to waste food? and parents going along with it?
They need to do a few volunteer stints in a foodbank.
Wasting food isn't funny.

LakeTiticaca · 23/02/2023 12:25

Instead of destroying food why don't you send him down to the local food bank to volunteer his time.

Manopadmanaban · 23/02/2023 12:27

How many times are you going to post? Haven't you got anything else to do?

Bonjovispjs · 23/02/2023 12:32

I wonder what thread 3 of fruit football will entail? 😀 And yeah, your wastefulness is gross, but surely you can make your own mind up about what to do without having to ask us?

Tinkerbyebye · 23/02/2023 12:35

Sorry but I would be telling them if they have money to buy fruit to destroy it in a stupid game, they can buy the fruit and donate it to a food bank

its a waste of good food, which appears to be in short supply

pastabakes · 23/02/2023 12:35

YABU. We’ve seen 16 year olds arrested for local stabbings, thefts, all sorts.

Yes it’s wasteful, but if my kid just wanted to play with fruit and bond with their sibling then absolutely, go ahead, smash that watermelon!
They’ll get voted of it soon enough, but it will still be a fun memory to look back on.
