DS 14 fruit football again....

Hey all,

Original thread (www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4745202-ds-and-mates-playing-football-in-garden?page=1) (for those who haven't seen the original thread, DS 16 and 14 recreated the following)

Here we go again - DS 14 told DH last night that he wants to play football again on the weekend (with fruit) as he did last weekend, however he wants only him and his older brother (DS 16) this time as he didn't get to destroy as much fruit as he wanted and said he really enjoyed him self and wants to try again - see if he can win his brother this time;

DH was in a bit of a hurry last night so told him it'd be fine, however i'm not sure at all as it's a lot of money to spend on fruit over two weeks to do the same activity.

Would it be reasonable for me to stop him this time? They did both leave it clean and tidy last time (and they paid for the fruit too). Don't want to ruin his fun and bonding time with his older brother too either though.

AIBU?

YANBU - stop him from playing and ask him to do another activity
YABU - let him crack on with it and play

This is so disrespectful.
There's a reason why almost all cultures have a tradition of giving thanks for food and for people to be just destroying it for fun is quite disgusting.

What a disgusting waste of food. What kind of lessons are you both teaching your son?
It doesn't matter if its his money and he can afford it. It's shameful

I agree with this. I would be ashamed of my child wasting food in this way.

WiddlinDiddlin · 23/02/2023 13:25

If they're taking waste 'about to be thrown out' veg/fruit off teh greengrocer then a/ why are they paying for it and b/ why the thread at all.

So I don't really believe that...

I'd say no, food waste isn't appropriate, think of something else that would be fun - car wash sponges wet with water soluble paint (very thin) so it goes SPLAT as its hit with the ball? or if the short term staining is an issue, just different colour/sizes of sponges dipped in washing up liquid foam, they'll splat well and the sizes provide a challenge.

Empty pop bottles full of water could also be fun. Ditto water balloons.

thanks all for the posts - just to clarify a few points

this is an idea they've had from a video they've seen on youtube - they tried it last week (after the majority of the posters on the previous thread said it looked fun, let them do it etc) with some friends, however DS 14 wants to do it with just his older brother this time.

they do understand the importance of food - all the fruit which they purchased was gonna be thrown out by the local grocers anyway so was close to expiry

Just posting here to see what others think - there's a lot worse they could be doing (but a lot better too) - it's which battles do I pick and fight

it's which battles do I pick and fight

Why do they need to buy fruit when they have a wet lettuce at home?

Floralnomad · 23/02/2023 13:35

It was a stupid idea the first time , it’s still a stupid idea - why not get them to invent their own football game rather than blindly following morons on you tube .

this I do not believe. Most grocers will reduce it so that people who can't afford full price can buy it. It doesn't get thrown out.
If it doesn't sell at reduced price it goes on one of the free food apps and gets snapped up by people who can't afford even the reduced price.

Killingmytime · 23/02/2023 13:37

I personally think yabu.
I don’t think anyone should be destroying good food like this. It’s quite sickening.
i Hope either way he enjoys bonding time with his brother though!

lummsnet · 23/02/2023 13:41

You could've chopped the fruit up and frozen it for smoothies. Discarding any bad bits

DrFoxtrot · 23/02/2023 14:45

See you in a couple more weeks OP, when they decide they want to play again.

Agree. OP last time you said you gave them £25

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/02/2023 14:55

I think once was fun and they wanted to try it

Now needs to be stuff that isn't good that could be eaten :given esp if these col times

Wet sponges - water balloons - plastic bottles - tins - cuddlies - paper plates etx all could be used
