AIBU To Hope that Schools Do Not Book this Performer?

A trans cartoonist cartoonist called Sophie Labelle has had a couple of events cancelled on an upcoming tour due to serious concerns about safeguarding.

As recently as 2021 Sophie has produced ‘diaperfur art’ which is cartoons taken from real life pictures of other people’s babies and toddlers and sexualised them into art for men with a ‘diaper’ fetish.

This person was booked for a speaking event at Sheffield Library which was billed as family friendly, suitable for children and among others, at a Temperance pub. These events have now been cancelled after protest that they should have an 18 rating and it is certainly not suitable to have this person talking to kids (Sophie has also hosted a reading event for children in a sex shop in Finland, surrounded by sex toys).

As a snap back for the cancelled events, Sophie has claimed that Sophie has also been booked to talk at several middle schools in Scotland and that parents don’t know about them.

Bearing in mind that a Scottish school thought it was suitable to book a drag Queen called Flow Job to appear at a primary school with Mhairi Black (FJ also had some very questionable social media content)

AIBU to hope that Scottish schools would do their due diligence (the information is freely available) and not book such an unsuitable person?

Do any Scottish parents know of any ‘surprise’ guests scheduling at school events in the next month or so?

I had a bet with myself before opening the thread that this would concern a trans person. Looks like I won.

@lazycats So blame us for talking about it...? Why not blame the trans person who is doing this and therefore giving trans people a bad name? No, that would too difficult wouldn't? Just blame the messenger/whistleblowers and ignore the fact that if they didn't do these things, there would be nothing to discuss!

lifeturnsonadime · 25/02/2023 11:44

How anyone can defend this I have no idea.

Why, as a society, have we got to the point that a woman can be interviewed for a public order defence for telling the truth which upsets people who believe in gender, yet this is absolutely fine and dandy and is being promoted by Local Authorities?

The world's gone mad.

lifeturnsonadime · 25/02/2023 11:45

Sorry that should have said 'interviewed by the police for a public order offence for telling the truth'.

It's absolutely insane that telling the truth is a crime but parading a nappy fetish and normalising pedophilia in the name of 'art' is not.

After watching that video, I’ve realised that the target audience is adults. Any children/young people that attend will be a bonus for Sophie.

I think people who don’t see the issue with this person doing public talks are assuming that Sophie is operating under normal rules for society. Sophie has claimed to exercise Sophie’s fetish ‘responsibly’ so some people think ‘oh that’s ok, he knows it’s not ok for people to harm children’.

Anyone who watches that video will understand the issues with this assumption. I reiterate, Sophie produces material that involves children for men to use for masturbation purposes. The boundaries of what is ok have already been broken. From looking at things that Sophie has already said in public, the talks are likely to include some aspect of boundary pushing and normalising harmful behaviour.

The danger is not specifically to children in that audience on that particular evening, the danger in the longer term is about normalising behaviour that should not be normalised. It is important to remember that predators can play a very long game.

Spot on, Richard. That's very well put, you should send that to Sheffield Libraries and any relevant MP's (all of them?). The TRA's are clouding the issue with transphobia and bigotry and they are missing the key points you have made in your post.

Update. Sophie Labelle has allegedly assaulted a journalist in the street and tried to steal his notebooks after an interview. He’s got audio of a very brave woman helping him out. __

Yes. I saw that. It is no surprise considering the lack of boundaries this person has. I do hope that the police get involved.

Jean Hatchet was harassed by this person at the show in Sheffield library (ie. This person made unwanted remarks to Jean) and was shadowed by a woman the entire time she was there. As if Jean would ‘make trouble’. All Jean did was sit and take notes (read by the other woman) and take in what was happening and left when she had felt she has seen enough. But apparently, Labelle ‘chased’ Jean out with their comments … or some other weird claim.

I doubt they have a healthy perspective on acceptable behaviour.

SinnerBoy · 04/03/2023 09:57

That's quite sinister and intimidating for her. What was the woman going to do - snatch her notebook? Why would she need to read over Jean's shoulder?

Being trans is irrelevant and the nappy fetish isn't an inherent problem in itself. But no, a person with an open nappy fetish isn't an appropriate performer for children. Stick to the adults. Why is that even a problem? Plenty of artists of adult stuff accept they're not going to be invited to be on Sesame Street because it wouldn't be appropriate.

Being trans is not irrelevant, because being trans is why they’re given a free pass on this shit. Do you think a regular perverted bloke would have been invited to speak to kids?

It was purely intimidatory behaviour.

I’ve just received an Alumni newsletter email from my old University (in Queensland, Australia).

”Author talk with Sophie Labelle” March 13 (In person event)

“Sophie Labelle is a neurodivergent trans cartoonist and novelist, she will speak about her art and activism, comic-making, community building and empowerment through art, followed by a Q&A and book signing.”

YouJane · 08/03/2023 19:09

It's unbelievable that this is still going on. Labelle shared a message she received from one of the venues saying 'this is 100% the hill I will die on' or something like that, in reference to not cancelling the show. So these people are ok with what Labelle is/does? I don't get it! It's purely because they are under the shield of TRANS. If it was a man saying and doing the things Labelle does no way would he be welcomed to any venue, he would be cancelled, shunned, and possibly arrested, and rightly so. It's bizarre that people are so aggressive in their defense of this person - even to the point of intimidating journalists in a library ffs! And now there are supposedly more dates coming in June! Jesus wept!

YouJane · 08/03/2023 19:17

It's also downright slanderous that Labelle keeps saying 'anti-trans' and 'transphobes' have targeted the venues, sent threatening emails, threatened and intimidated staff, threatened violence, threats threats and more threats. I don't believe a word of it. Personally, I just emailed a link to the Reduxx article and let them figure it out for themselves. I never even said my opinion on the matter, just wanted to make them aware of the kind of person they were platforming. Except for Sheffield Council - they seemed to want to pretend that this was just an online smear campaign (and not something Labelle actually ADMITTED to) and so I had to give them a piece of my mind about it. Worth mentioning that at no point did I threaten anyone with anything. Although they still probably think I'm just a nasty hateful bigot. Shrug.

Also laughable that Labelle is crowing about selling out events - I have heard from multiple sources that the events were not even close to selling out, I mean, The Critic article about Sheffield said there were rows and rows of empty seats lol. Yeah, congrats on your sell out tour, Soph. Furthermore, the people who objected to your presence actually managed to get several of your dates cancelled and one moved to a random industrial complex in Bradford somewhere - so wtf are you even talking about 'they didn't manage to get one talk cancelled'. This person is full to the brim with lies and delusion.

I also emailed several of the venues in Australia too, in case they weren't aware. Looks like they just don't care.

Nothing to do with the identity- it is pedophilia whatever the person's sex or identity- being paid for by the tax payer with parents or teachers offering up children to worship at the church of Nonce.
