to be sick of hearing the 'CLASS' card played on mn?

Is it just me? Or is anyone else sick of hearing the class divide thing mentioned on here?
As soon as someone mentions disciplining children, supermarkets , etc, it turns into a big class debate!

Why?

Why, in this day and age, when there is such a MASSIVE range of people no living in the UK, do we still give a flying toot about peoples class?

I think you can omly get insulted so much before you have to reply and 'play the class card' as you put it.
I just get tired of not having my opinion heard and of people lumping everyone together- like all wc are poor, uneduacated and have abuse problems-well, tes some do but alot are in well paid jobs, have a great education and care about the environment.
Sorry, I don't want to start this again but these lazy generalisations are what really piss people off.

Desiderata · 09/02/2008 21:05

I think you'll find, dizie, that the MC people on this thread would find your assumption that they read the Daily Mail somewhat amusing

I read it, of course.

I think you need to chill out. That post was rather ... angry.

AitchTwoOh · 09/02/2008 21:06

yes, and lazy generalisations such as 'you all think you're the dog's bollocks' piss others off too. and was designed to, i might add.

WaldenYapp · 09/02/2008 21:07

This is why:

the majority of Mumsnetters:

don't smack

don't argue with their husbands if they indeed have any,

and simply dont do anything because they are on here all of the time!

expatinscotland · 09/02/2008 21:07

Only read the OP.

Yes, it is tiresome and a real yawner, the whole 'class' thing.

It's boring, too.

AitchTwoOh · 09/02/2008 21:12

ayyyyyy-men, expat.

scottishmummy · 09/02/2008 21:12

Class Schmass i dont give a flying feck frankly

expatinscotland · 09/02/2008 21:14

Moony's thread is far more fun, all! And it's so far been light-hearted.

Come along.

i think you all have an inferiority complex. no matter what your start in life, if you work hard enough you will have a good life - there is no excuse - why work one job when you can work two?

whilst working those two jobs study for a degree, a masters ( that you wll have to fund) and a PHD ( self funded) between the hours of 1am and 1,30 am over 20 years at te university of pheonix.

after all on council esates parent onlyparet by force. walk down a MC street - sya someone with a PHD and they paret much better becuase education gives one analytical skills that on needs fr parenting. after all i can give up shoppingat waitrose for lent and give my money to the deserving poor whilt we taret our parenting resources at council estates ( where they beat fuck out of kids) becuase those of us who have PHDs, shop at waitrose or consider OURSELVES to be middle class - dont need the resorces spent on s - bcuase e much rather have our head up our arses

booge · 09/02/2008 21:16

Agreed, it's a right yawn. This last week it has felt as if Mumsnet is having a class war. I'd rather talk about makeup and thats not my thing either.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/02/2008 21:20

Expat, you say so much by saying so little. Agree 100%.

Tis very yawnsome.

mylovelymonster · 09/02/2008 21:25

I enjoy pigeon-holing people into two main groups:

  1. Horrid ignorant rude arrogant f&@^s
  2. Pleasant warm considerate courteous folk

Either can be of any financial situation/education/up-bringing/supermarket persuasion.

Aren't those of us who have to make a living working class these days? I consider being called middle class a huge personal insult.
And another thing, inverted snobbery is just as odious as the conventional kind.

mylovelymonster · 09/02/2008 21:29

Yes, very sick of all the silliness on MN. Very basic and tribal. Much rather talk about music/hot men/clothes/lovely baby stuff.

duchesse · 09/02/2008 21:29

As an expat child who's returned to the the UK, all I can say it's very English (not sure about Wales and Scotland as have limited experience) to worry about this completely intangible thing called "class". I think if as a country we focussed more on decent core values (being friendly, contributing to our society, caring about others, etc...) instead of where we all do our shopping, we'd probably get along a lot better.

fwiw, I don't actually believe in class; they're a handy way of keeping people busy trying to stay, rise above, or avoid their perceived social group. Class in my view belongs in the same place as eugenics and ingrained racism: in history books as a fascinating way people had of feeling superior to others.

duchesse · 09/02/2008 21:32

ps: I think people of any background can display "snobbery". Whether or not something is snobbish seems entirely subjective. Pulling the snobbery argument is cheap and impossible to counter. Accepting the existence of "inverse snobbery" postulates the existence of an accepted hierarchy, in which one "group" is morally superior to another; so inverse snobbery can go as well in my book.

This is really quite a tribal country.

DeeRiguer · 09/02/2008 21:38

lol walden yapp
nail on head moment there!

my lovely monster its so true, there are people here i truly dont agree with or have uspet! and they turn out NICE you find out that and like them though not maybe agree

there are other feckers who should just put their P60 and property portfolio, fat bank statement on their profile and be done with it...
they make it dull cause they are dull
living a plastic tedium of a life, with not much class either

Quattrocento · 09/02/2008 21:41

swearing off waitrose for lent to go to 'tesco, the poor people's shop'

Quattro is very late into this debate - did someone really give up Waitrose for Lent and describe Tesco as the poor people's shop?

Did they really?

Gosh

Who did that then?

AitchTwoOh · 09/02/2008 21:42

some silly twit trying to be smart, quattro, pay them no heed.

Quattrocento · 09/02/2008 21:42

Custy

You are talking nonsense, and I know you are talking nonsense deliberately. It's much more fun when you are talking sense, which is most of the time. You need your rhubarb

Girls, girls, girls - seriously in danger of going off on one. What's wrong with everyone.....why can't we all just join hands in spiritual love and understanding? Sharing in the warmth and human insight our mutual motherhood has bestowed upon us?

PS Waitrose rocks. Do they have rhubarb at the moment?
