School toast

Today I forgot to pay my 6 year olds toast money which they have at morning break. They gave every single child a slice of toast besides my daughter.

I have never forgotten before. Could they not have just put a note in her book bag as a reminder? Or sent a text.

You pay online for the term so I have paid it now (20p per day) including todays… even though she didn’t get any.

Should primary schools be more understanding? It’s not the child’s fault, it was mine.

Is it fair to single them out ? Toast for you, toast for you, NO toast for you , toast for you….

No way would I let a child go without, for 20p, the worlds gone mad.

We can't see how much is on the account. It just says whether it's in credit or arrears. Blanket rule as last year, when staff had discretion, we ended the year a few hundred pounds down and can't afford it.

Hilarious that people are saying it's your fault so what do you expect. If I worked at the school, I'd have eye rolled at you not paying but for the price of single slice of toast, I wouldn't let a child feel excluded like that. It's so bizarre.

Well technically it is their ‘fault’ but the school were harsh for the sake of a one off!

donttellmehesalive · 20/02/2023 18:35

But there isn't time to consider whether it's a one off or not, with a queue of 350 children and 15 minutes to serve them.

So the teacher should have left the class, gone to the kitchen and made some more toast specifically for a child whose parents hadn't paid?

Dominoeffecter · 20/02/2023 18:35

Is this breakfast club?

So you are saying they made the toast in advance checking in advance who had paid x 250

LyndaSnellsSniff · 20/02/2023 18:50

How do they make so much toast?? Has the kitchen got one of those huge toasting machine like they had in Victoria Wood's dinnerladies??

I totally understand how you feel, my 5 year old reception child came home in tears today as they had pancake tasting, my son didn’t get one because he has a dairy allergy so he sat watching everyone else eating pancakes distraught at being left out. I have asked his teacher multiple times if they are doing cooking or baking to let me know so I can sort out a dairy free option for my son, she didn’t let me know I’m not asking her to make an alternative so I don’t understand her problem, this has happen multiple times now.

it makes you feel so rubbish as a mum thinking about your child sat without anything whilst everyone else is tucking in doesn’t it.

That’s so sad. My DS is allergic to eggs and last year his teacher made egg-free pancakes for the entire class.

Pancakes are so easy to adapt. There was no need for your DS to be left out.

One thing that was recommended to me was that I provide a box of shelf stable treats my DS can definitely eat to be kept at school. So he has a box of individually wrapped oreos (his favourite) in his teacher’s cupboard. If there’s ever any doubt over whether he can eat something then they just give him those and he doesn’t feel left out. Not quite the same as pancakes, but better than nothing.

They probably get people habitually forgetting to pay. This is your fault, not the schools.

Oh give over, like they've not got the whole term to recoup their money!

Exactly this!

Dondigdu · 20/02/2023 19:08

Orrr that's tight.

When my DD started school in reception I had no idea the school even did toast if you paid for it. DD came home on the first day so upset because everyone else had gotten toast and theyd told her she couldnt have any because her parents didnt pay for it 😭

Shes 8 now and it still makes me feel sad thinking of that poor little 4 year old just wanting some toast

I went in the day next and tried to pay for the toast for the term but they wouldnt let me

I've paid for toast every term since 😅

Glulam · 20/02/2023 19:12

The person making the toast will just have had the numbers for that day from the office. There won’t have been a deliberate show of passing over your child. I understand that it’s frustrating but they can’t be seen to favour one child over others. There will be others who haven’t paid - whether deliberately or by accident - and won’t have toast. For you this is one day, but there is a wider context.

Dominoeffecter · 20/02/2023 19:18

So this isn’t breakfast club?

OldTinHat · 20/02/2023 19:20

Its been nearly 20yrs since my DC were at primary - do the schools not give them a free piece of fruit anymore?

Probably a stupid question...

20p for a slice of toast though? I'm speechless.

whatsup00 · 20/02/2023 19:24

I feel a bit sad about this as I bet there are kids who want toast whose parents don't pay the 20p so they can't have it :/

user375242 · 20/02/2023 19:30

I'd be tempted to go to the office and ask for a refund of 20p to prove a point how petty it is to leave a child out because they hadn't paid on the first day back.

BertHandsome · 20/02/2023 19:30

Honestly, if they were this petty with my child I’d email them and say something like I want the 20p refunded for today as she didn’t have any, and wouldn’t let it drop. But I’m an arsehole 😂

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 20/02/2023 19:36

Fairycake89 · 20/02/2023 14:28

Yep…20p that I’ve still had to pay even though she never received it haha x

Tell him to give her 2 slices tomorrow.

timetorefresh · 20/02/2023 19:36

I really want some hot buttery toast now. Had they had something for breakfast? Not sure I'd be wanting to pay 20p for a slice of toast every day

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 20/02/2023 19:36

*them

Forever42 · 20/02/2023 19:36

Totally beside the point but what is this toast business? I've been a primary teacher for 20 years across multiple schools and never heard of toast for snack. Who has time to make this? Our kitchen staff are run off their feet preparing school dinners.

At my school you get free fruit in KS1 then you bring your own if you want it in KS2.

That’s what I’m wondering, my son gets breakfast from breakfast club (incorporated into price) but on the mornings he doesn’t go I give him breakfast.

Smartiepants79 · 20/02/2023 19:40

Oh god, it’s threads like this that make me wonder why my school does nice things like this.
At my school this toast has bought by a TA, on her own time. Lists organised by staff. Toast Cooked by a TA on her own break time.
’It’s just 20p’ - how often do you reckon they hear that. Add in all the parents that don’t bother to pay it back and schools good will rapidly runs out.
Remember to pay for your child or accept that they may go without. This is on you not the school.

Bread, she’s buys bread 🤭

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/02/2023 19:43

Ah see this happened in our class BUT they gave toast to the child whose parents hadn't paid and didn't have enough for the whole class so MY child didn't get any as he was at the back of the queue. I had paid for the whole school year back in September!

He ended up with an extra pear but I (secretly) wasn't happy that he missed out due to another parents lack of organisation.
