Why is there shops full of clothes for women who are skinnt but nothing bigger i hate going clothes literally can never find anything in a size 16 it's all size 6 and 8 is the fat back in the 90s discrimination trend coming in again?? Shouldn't need to skinny to look nice??

OP posts:
franglais123 · 20/02/2023 08:42

I’m a size 8 but I’m not skinny.

Last time I was in M&S there were lots of bigger sizes - I struggled to find the smaller ones.

The very cheap shops are probably aimed at teenagers who are likely to be in the smaller sizes?

Einszwei · 20/02/2023 08:42

In most mainstream shops it's because 16 is a popular size. A 6 is far less common.

JennyDarlingRIP · 20/02/2023 08:43

I really don't find this anymore, I've been everything from an 18 to an 8 and there is definitely a lot more choice in larger sizes than twenty plus years ago. There are shops that go up to size 26 now that definitely wasn't a thing in the 90s

name985 · 20/02/2023 08:43

More people in UK are size 16, so it's more likely these clothes have been sold. Far less people are size 6-8, so more likely these have not been sold.

Clothes shops are businesses and they need to make money, so they aren't going to deliberately only sell small clothes to make you feel bad.

SallyWD · 20/02/2023 08:44

What shops do you go to? Whenever I go clothes shopping (M and S, Next etc) I get frustrated that clothes are either small sizes (6 and 8) or large sizes (18, 20, 22). Nothing that fits me at a size 12. I think they probably have my size to begin with but they run out. Anyway, I always see larger sizes.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 20/02/2023 08:45

There’s plenty in those sizes in all shops? Except very high-end designer stores and I can’t feel sorry for anyone who’s shopping at that price point.

Comedycook · 20/02/2023 08:46

I think all the medium/larger sizes get sold first...as in size 12/14/16. Usually the stuff in the sale is in the tiny sizes. I don't think shops have realised they need to put more of certain sizes on the rails.

Teriyakieverything · 20/02/2023 08:47

Stop labelling anything and everything 'good'/valued as being a 'privilege'/exclusionary and then trying to induce guilt and make out it is a 'bad' thing because it is not 'inclusive'.

ChaToilLeam · 20/02/2023 08:47

There’s far more choice in size 16 than there used to be. It just sells out fast.

Yerroblemom1923 · 20/02/2023 08:47

I think because your average woman is a 14/16 those sizes will sell out fastest. If you ever look in the sales or outlet stores there are loads of either tiny sizes eg 4/6 or large eg 20 + because those are the sizes that don't sell as well.
It's nothing personal, OP.

Whyisitsososohard · 20/02/2023 08:48

I think clothes stock is a tiny part of what skinny privlidge is. I've gone form a 22 to a 14 do not skinny but getting clothes is so much easier.

You'll have people here telling you it's not a thing and the price you pay for being fat though...

AngeloMysterioso · 20/02/2023 08:49

I find the opposite… I’m an 8-10 and I can hardly ever find clothes in my size.

TrainedObserver · 20/02/2023 08:51

i am size 8 to 10 now but when smaller I was told shops only buy in a couple of size 6s so I could never find any. There seemed to be many more bigger sizes.

I guess we search partly with our own wishes in mind, so notice the absence of our sizes more.

Ndd135632 · 20/02/2023 08:53

Huh? Can never find clothes for my size 6-8 daughter. Stop moaning

Maybebabyno2 · 20/02/2023 08:54

I'm an 8/10 and really struggle to find stuff.

Sparklfairy · 20/02/2023 08:55

I don't find this at all. Even if I manage to find my size - 10 - I can't seem to find anything in the shops that actually has a waist.

FYI 6 and 8 aren't 'skinny' - which was a more socially acceptable way to say 'skin and bone' but is now used in a passive aggressive way of saying 'slimmer than me'.

heatdeath · 20/02/2023 08:56

Lol at size 10 being “skinny”

SallyWD · 20/02/2023 08:58

Yes because on Mumsnet only a size 0 might be considered skinny. If you're very tall size 10 could well be on the skinny side.

Perry34 · 20/02/2023 08:59

Because they sell out before size 6-8?

iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort · 20/02/2023 08:59

I do find this in Primark but not anywhere else

Primark is all size 4 or 2XS
Looks like something my granddaughter would wear

My fat ass goes off to MS or TK Maxx - loads of choices there

twitterexile · 20/02/2023 09:00

I see more larger sizes than I used to. I was a teenager in the 80s and size 14s were a rarity and you felt enormous if you needed to wear a 14.

Bigbadfish · 20/02/2023 09:01

It's not skinny privilege. It's not a conspiracy. No one is out to get you or show you up.

It's supply and demand.

WaltzingWaters · 20/02/2023 09:02

I generally find the opposite. I’m a size 8/10 and always find there’s loads of bigger sizes and I can’t find stuff in my size.

The other sizes are so popular, they sell out first.

Incidentally, size 4 and 2XS is incredibly difficult to get hold
of anywhere but Primark; all sizes can have issues

WandaWonder · 20/02/2023 09:04

I just figure the larger sizes sell out quicker so the 6-8 is what's left

It does annoy me though
