ARGH! I think it is the other way round.

So many clothes in a size 14 to 16 compared to size 8 or even a 10 on the shelves.

The sales are just what is left over - usually the poorly fitting items where you try on your normal size and it looks ridiculous.

And you should try being a size 10 and nearly 5'11!! So many 14+ pairs of jeans the other day but hardly anything in a 10, then so many of the size 10s short length, as they seem to assume slimmer people are also really short!

And just to get this clear, size 8 is NOT skinny unless you are over 6ft tall. It is a NORMAL size. Most people in a size 14 unless you are quite tall would be considered overweight.

Yes it must be shit to be a size 10 and 5'11!

I'm openly envious of you, you must look fantastic. I'm 5'10 and can only aspire to a size 10 these days.

I used to like Long Tall Sally for stuff but they closed my local branch.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 20/02/2023 09:41

Is that you FatDoctor?

tennesseewhiskey1 · 20/02/2023 09:42

Absolutely untrue - I always find less smaller sizes and loads more bigger sizes.

Seasonofthewitch83 · 20/02/2023 09:42

It is a privilege to be able to be able to shop for clothes in person, absolutely.

Most high street chains generally have shite plus size clothes anyway, so women stopped buying them because you can get better online e.g ASOS.

I brought some jogging bottoms from Yours a few months back and realised that was the first time I had gone into a changing room in about 10 years!

I hate mail order stuff as I never have time to return things if they don't fit, but high street shopping can be really frustrating!

To be fair I'm only a size 10 as I do 2 hours of kickboxing a week and 2 gym sessions, plus on my feet all day as a teacher! If I stopped the exercise I would go up a few sizes as I like my food too much and could never diet!

Whammyyammy · 20/02/2023 09:44

I find the term skinny as offensive as the term fat

MelaniesFlowers · 20/02/2023 09:44

Wanderingowl · 20/02/2023 09:25

It's not a privilege to be a normal, healthy weight. It's just baseline. It's not easier to be a standard size for a human, it's just harder to be bigger than that. Just like it's harder in lots of ways to be very short, as I am, or very tall. Though with our height we don't have any options to change.

Agreed. The option to be a smaller size is open to you OP just like it is to everyone else.

SnowyPetals · 20/02/2023 09:44

If you can't find clothes in a size 16 then you are in the wrong shops. Loads of high street shops stock size 16. It's horses for courses in shops - I find most stuff in Zara doesn't suit my shape so I shop elsewhere. In general I think there are more stock issues than pre-covid and often find my size out of stock (I am anything from a 10 to a 14 depending on the shop). But it isn't about "skinny privilege", I think you are jumping to conclusions.

jonnyfancypants · 20/02/2023 09:45

Which shops are you going to? It's completely normal these days for shops to sell size 16-18.

PuddlesPityParty · 20/02/2023 09:46

Im a size 4-6 usually, and find it hard to find my size in a lot of places like M&S! I know they sell size 6 online but it’s never in store 🤔 Primark are good for smaller sizes tbf. Although I’m trying to buy second hand now.

SmudgeButt · 20/02/2023 09:48

What gets me is that when you get into the plus sizes it's also assumed you're short. Trousers are shorter in length and there's less options for longer hems on skirts. A "customer service" person in M&S once commented to me that it's because "short people are normally quite fat". One of the times I dropped the clothing I was holding and walked over it on my way out of the shop.

KevinsChilli · 20/02/2023 09:48

YABVU to use the term 'skinny' - I bet you'd be offended if someone called you fat? So stop using the term 'skinny.'

And what do you propose fat people wear in the meantime until everyone loses weight?

Shall we just walk around in sacks?

SUCH short-sighted and stupid argument.

Oh well, don't be fat then. Thanks, you have just solved the problem!

It's not the same at all... because of the way society views weight and size. It's one of those things that people think there being really clever by saying. It's not. You need to view these terms in the context of the society we live in.

StClare101 · 20/02/2023 09:52

Skinny privilege? Ridiculous.

Sohappyrun · 20/02/2023 09:53

I’m size 12 and don’t consider myself fat or skinny. I can NEVER find size 12 when I go shopping in the sales, it’s always tiny sizes 6-8 or big sizes,16, 18,20….I assume that’s because 12 is a popular size so they always sell out quick? It’s very annoying!

This is wrong.

The taller someone is the bigger they are. That’s lengths often increase slightly as you go up the size ranges. This was always obviuos when l was cutting and grading patterns for manufacturers.

I do as well. Can you imagine the outrage if someone had posted there’s only fat sizes in the shops and I can’t find anything in a small size?

There isn’t a problem. There isn’t a shortage of size 16-18 clothes.

MelaniesFlowers · 20/02/2023 09:55

There isn’t a problem. There isn’t a shortage of size 16-18 clothes.

The problem is if you are above a size 22/24, the majority of high street jobs do not cater for you.

Argue all you want about the Ifs an Whys there isnt, but that would then fall under the category of the western recognised term 'Thin Privilege.'

C4ou56 · 20/02/2023 09:58

I find I worry about the smaller sized girls when I go shopping. I’m a size 14 and feel chubby but due to size inflation I regularly buy S and XS. I find I only struggle with shopping I store on a Monday, which I assume means they’ve sold out of my sizes at the weekend and need to restock

Climbles · 20/02/2023 10:00

Why are so many people arguing about the semantics of ‘skinny’. It’s very clear from the OP what her point is.
I’ve been everything from a size 6/8 to and 22 as an adult and I’m a 12 now. No issues with finding clothes at all at a size 12 but struggled at both ends of the spectrum. Anything over a size 16 starts to get difficult IME.

Hope551 · 20/02/2023 10:00

@Wanderingowl prior to my pregnancy I would have to shop in kids section 😂😂 found it really embarrassing going into changing rooms with kiddy clothes. Also I never looked particularly fashionable, wearing frilly skirts or floral jeans with strawberry jumpers at 25 😂

SwordToFlamethrower · 20/02/2023 10:02

I wouldn't call it a privilege to have to constantly work out and watch what you eat. It is shitty and exhausting to constantly have to control yourself
