I used to work in the sexual health field in a suburban area. It is not a rare or unusual practice, not even amongst perfectly ‘average’, heterosexual couples of all ages and backgrounds.

It is more unusual than cunnilingus or fellatio, sure, but it isn’t rare. As for the appeal, I think it’s the porn factor, added to the taboo/naughty element and there are likely pluses for the recipient as there are nerve endings in that area.

Anal interestingly is a lower percentage the younger the respondent, only 24.4% of females in the age 24-35 age group

So not 'common' at all
