NC as I'm at work.

I work in Higher Education. Our Institution is perhaps not captured as much as some but still has an "inclusion" policy that says T people should use the facilities they feel most comfortable in. I've kept fairly quiet up till now for fear of being sent for re-education.

I just asked my senior management level boss if he'd seen that FM has resigned, he actually said "She messed up, I'll be honest and say I don't agree with all the gender recognition stuff and the way JKR has been treated is appalling"

The times they are a'changing.

niugboo · 15/02/2023 11:26

The irony. Trans rights killing the careers of women.

beAsensible1 · 15/02/2023 11:27

What a massive loss for British politics and opposition voices against this government.

While people may not agree with her politics, she is excellent, cuts through and tries to have the courage of her convictions based on what she believes is right rather than personality , unkindness and culture war trash.

What a sad day for us all.

GCAcademic · 15/02/2023 11:27

Let that be a lesson to any politician who thinks that endangering women and children, and then smearing opponents of such legislation as bigots, transphobes, racists and homophobes, is progressive or a vote winner.

GCAcademic · 15/02/2023 11:29

the courage of her convictions based on what she believes is right

The trouble is that her convictions were increasingly out of step with the public's views, and she became increasingly authoritarian in her attempts to put her "convictions" into law.

That's assuming that they were actually her convictions, rather than a calculated and cynical attempt to engineer a showdown with Westminster.

This is indicative of how poor Scottish politics is.

The Scottish government has performed so poorly that the first minister is resigning and the leader of what should be a major opposition party insists this is not a day for ‘political attacks’.

He’s clearly confused something like the death of a head of state (where it would be inappropriate to bang on about politics) with a political leader having to resign because she and her government have been dreadful.

Would be appropriate if there were health reasons, I suppose.

The words “hastily convened” as pp mentioned also stood out to me. I hadn’t heard of the financial issues (my head is in the sand clearly, as although I’m not in Scotland I assume this has been widely reported across the UK).

I think I’m getting old. I’m not even outraged and surprised when politicians are found to have let the power go to their heads and either stop listen and get a bit megalomaniacal or become out and out corrupt. I wish our system rewarded politicians for honesty and decency and a desire to do the country proud. There isn’t any politician I trust on any level now and I don’t trust any of the reporting on it either. Hence the head in the sand, I guess. I do want to know but I can’t decipher what I actually think is going on between all the lies and agendas.

frasersmummy · 15/02/2023 11:31

oh my goodness .. talk about milking the moment !!

She has been the (very loud) voice OF the government for many years now. The Scottish government.

She’s not the plucky voice of opposition. She has been leading the government.

its actually amazing that she’s managed to fool people into thinking otherwise.

Butchyrestingface · 15/02/2023 11:32

So apparently she was at a funeral yesterday and thought "Fuck dis shite".

RicciardoPerez · 15/02/2023 11:33

She's a feminist and will fight for women's rights?!

Ummm 🫠🫠🫠

It’s not though, is it?

It’s a failure to deliver on key things and a whole mounting pile of scandals.

Yet, even her political opponents want us all to take a nice deferential moment to pay tribute to St Nicola.

That speaks volumes about Scottish politics. It’s an absolute mess.

StillWantingADog · 15/02/2023 11:35

I'm not in Scotland but the view from where I am sitting is she is (was) an excellent politician of honesty and integrity - even though she didn't get everything right. I don't want Scotland to become independent but believe it is a decision for the Scots.

However most of my Scottish friends are sick to the back teeth of her. I think we have different perspectives from across the border.

Blessedwithsunshine · 15/02/2023 11:36

niugboo · 15/02/2023 11:26

The irony. Trans rights killing the careers of women.

It would not have killed the career of any woman if she was able to identify one!

I am afraid she did not speak up or for us. For women and girls. Nicola Sturgeon sold us all out, she will be remembered for that. Unfortunately NS still talks about ‘rational discussion’ around inclusion again now calling herself a ‘feminist’ of all things!! Despite giving away our rights to middle aged rapists and not being able to even identify the very biological women she is supposed to represent!

About time - she had lost the plot!

Indeed. For a long time, I thought she was one of the more sensible, down to earth politicians. How wrong was I?!

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 15/02/2023 11:37

She is not honest.

For me personally, I think she did us well during Covid with the lockdowns etc. yes she's not for everyone, but for me, it was the whole trans issue and the rapist being held in a female prison, that lost my respect to her.

I had to laugh when she said she is a feminist and will fight for women's rights!!!

I don't understand all the hate she got. She did a good job most of the time.

Blessedwithsunshine · 15/02/2023 11:39

Her answers to the questions are unraveling and muddled. There seems to be something not being said, her words sound hollow.

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst

So?

It's major news. Mn is a big sure with lots of sections. Should there be a limit?

No limit, but it's hard to read them all at the same time.
Big news indeed.

hamstersarse · 15/02/2023 11:40

It is awkward that she calls herself a feminist. I genuinely wonder how she squares protecting women in the feminist sense with putting a rapist in a confined space with them.

The wonders of the human mind!

Me too! That’s the trouble with the current set up. People of making a good sound bite get the popular vote. As pp said, only sociopaths have any chance of doing well in politics as it is now.

ismu · 15/02/2023 11:40

Botw1 · 15/02/2023 11:04

Except its not impossible

Or at least, if people hadn't been so determined to favour imaginary trans rights over actual women's rights, it wouldn't have been

There are no legal arguments that can be made, that's the issue. If there were then it could have been referred to the Supreme Court, but Westminster couldn't do that, it's been stopped in a different way.

I think she's just had enough!

as I said we have a different perspective down here and I admit I am not Scottish. But she is so much better a politician and person than almost anyone in the lying/useless/corrupt/incompetent shit show that is the current Westminster government
