As time goes on, the criticism of how she handled Covid is growing. Our restrictions in Scotland went on for longer, and were stricter than in other places. Schools closed longer, hospitality closed longer, masks for longer, rules about not leaving your council area and all other manner of nonsense. At the time many people bought into the "keeping us all safe" rhetoric that she was spouting. Those of us who didn't were either "Toaries" or "covidiots/deniers", or both. But with increasing evidence that despite the much more severe rules in Scotland we did no better and no worse than England, Wales or N Ireland, many people are questioning whether the impact on everyone's lives, education and the economy was worth it.

I agree, I'm amazed that people defend her on this. She went into full on Big Brother dictator

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 15/02/2023 12:04

She chose her hill. Hope it was worth it for her.

Riverlee · 15/02/2023 12:05

That’s a shock. I don’t know the ins and outs of her politics (live in SE England), but, as a leader, she seemed fairly ‘steady’, for want of a better word, especially compared to English politics in recent times.

CalishataFolkart · 15/02/2023 12:05

Ah fuck

Riverlee · 15/02/2023 12:06

Apart from the gender fiasco. Was that her downfall?

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 15/02/2023 12:06

@ismuthe unquestioning “do what we’re told by the high heidyins” behaviour of Scots during covid was embarrassing. Zero need for the extra restrictions and they had no positive benefit. All designed by the nationalists to create ‘otherness’.

Butchyrestingface · 15/02/2023 12:06

I stood next to her at the old Warehouse on Argyle St once as we both eyed the same dress on a rack. She was fractionally taller than me.

I don't think it's fair to bring covid into this at all. We did have restrictions but they were incredibly popular here.
I think NS has just experienced menopause and the discrimination that goes with it and has just thought fuck that.

are we to take it that you don’t believe it’s ok to criticise female politicians based on their policies and the outcomes?

Trying to turn legitimate criticism of a senior politician into menopause discrimination is outright offensive.

medianewbie · 15/02/2023 12:07

As a woman in Scotland I am glad. As a parent of an Autistic child who 'thinks she might be Trans', I'm relieved - that process needs responsible adults around- NS was not one.

Longtimeloiterer · 15/02/2023 12:07

Was not expecting her to do that!

Given the whole trans row it was the right thing.

<cough> MISSING MONEY <cough>

saturdaymorningbored · 15/02/2023 12:12

There is no way she would have done this if there wasn't something damaging about to come out.
I'm guessing it is something to do with financial irregularities investigations.
It would have been nice to think it was regarding the male rapists saying they were female but i don't think she cares one jot about that

This. Police enquiries into SNP, and specifically Ms Sturgeon and her husband are going deeper….
she’ll be hiding out in Portugal this time next week

Elphame · 15/02/2023 12:14

Thank goodness.

Now for Drakeford. He's already stayed longer than he promised when he took over.

Why is it not fair? Given how poorly Scotland faired with covid?

From my own experience her handling of covid at the start was very well received, but support for the rules started to lessen when the levels were introduced as they made zero sense. And I know, again in my own experience, people are now looking back thinking why did we follow these crazy rules.

Her handling of covid wasn't good. And she deserves to be questioned on that.

I agree. I do think she left before she was pushed.

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 15/02/2023 12:18

Her Covid rules were more about being different from Boris. Agree that looking back it's hard to understand how she managed to convince so many that her action was proportionate. How it was OK to have thousands mingling at football matches while it was simultaneously not OK to have a friend in your front room for coffee.

I'm not Scottish but I have seen more of that lately.

That would make a great t shirt slogan.

Aaron95 · 15/02/2023 12:21

I doubt this has anything to do with the GRC. It has been coming for a while and is probably more to do with independence and the fact that every leader has a natural shelf life. Add in as well that it is an incredibly stressful and demanding job.

Now that the SNP cannot hold a referendum, there is no legal, peaceful route to Scottish independence. The party is due to hold a special conference in March to debate the route forward. Sturgeon has probably taken the campaign as far as she can in that direction. She now has baggage from other unpopular policies which the press are seizing on at every opportunity. She is resigning to allow someone new to determine where the SNP goes from here.

Botw1 · 15/02/2023 12:28

@HufflepuffRavenclaw

It wasn't.

TangledWebOfDeception · 15/02/2023 12:29

Absolutely right!

There is no impossible conundrum AT ALL.

They all, male or female, absolutely SHOULD be blamed for the absolute shit show of a mess they have created, driven and perpetuated. And women who betrayed other women absolutely do NOT get a free pass!

Hbh17 · 15/02/2023 12:32

I still think that she ran with the gender stuff to force a confrontation with the UK Govt & then thought she could use that to push forward with independence. Even tho the GR Bill was not in her manifesto & is, seemingly, not supported by the majority of her electorate.
Then it all blew up on her face.
But from what I can see, she has failed on independence, on Covid (too many rules for too long) and on health & education.
The hints about financial issues are tantalising but, even without that, it was obvious that she had reached the end.
