To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

@Maireas Indeed i can't complain! I had like a few months of hot flashes etc., but managed with hop-extract. It was mostly the years of insecurity, being in my 50's and still fertile? You must be kidding! But hey, better healthy and fertile than suffering right?

Maireas · 19/02/2023 23:03

Right. It can be really rough.

Rollingaroundinmud · 20/02/2023 09:57

I am glad I found this thread. I may have one last hoorah in my 40s and hop extract for menopause I hope it works for me.

Blimey - three more! How many is that on this thread now?
Most people on here seem to know a 50 year old (and beyond) who gave birth.

Well it's probably that the title of the thread is attracting people who have had this unusual experience/had knowledge of it, rather than a random sample happening to contain many people who know someone who has conceived at 50ish.

Maireas · 20/02/2023 10:34

Yes, I think you're right, @tattygrl
It's certainly not representative.

CocoFifi · 20/02/2023 20:39

yep and all conceived naturally

Bib1234 · 23/02/2023 17:41

If you’re having periods you have a chance of getting pregnant - you’ve gone through your whole life knowing that 😂
btw I tested negative til I was a week late - a negative test the day before you period is no guarentee

I get the impression some posters want OP to be pregnant!

Some weird wishful thinking from posters even though OP said she didn't want to be pregnant. 😩 Not every pregnancy is happy news.

Yes, this! I did a test a few days after I was due it was negative. Buy u still felt pregnant, and more than a week later, no period. When I tested again, it was positive.

So please OP do another one in a week to be safe

This is what worried me
Testing before your period is due isn't necessarily accurate.

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 24/02/2023 07:00

How old were you @bib1234 when that happened?

Not sure why that’s relevant tbh but I was in my 40s

Quite a bit of confusion on this thread. Getting pregnant at 49 with own eggs is very very different to getting pregnant with donor egg (usually women under 30). The latter changes are not much lower than a 40 year old getting pregnant. It's the age of the egg that is the determinant factor.

Also getting pregnant naturally at 45 is rare but nowhere as rate as 49. My grand mother gave birth to my mother, her first and of course o my child at that age.

Healthy eggs decrease significantly after 40, and even quicker after 49 to a point that they are just about non existant. So although possible, a natural pregnancy at 49 is very rare and one that leads to a life birth almost unheard of but of course, still a possibility, as is winning the lottery if played in the first place.

This is my understanding too. Egg quality is the issue over about 40, not necessarily not ovulating. The use of donor eggs would presumably make comparison of historic data difficult.

It's negative! I feel hugely relieved and still a bit stupid.

DH bought clear blue not the early one but as I'm due on tomorrow I think the result is correct.

Thanks very much for keeping me company during a shitty week.

Glad to hear it OP!

Holyguacamollie · 24/02/2023 15:55

My period started yesterday so I'm definitely not.

Thanks again for all the kind replies, I'm going to make sure I'm protected from now on for a few more years.

Thats a relief. Thanks for the update.

@Sennelier1 - so at 54 you had the fertility of a 35 year old and you had the menopause at 58? So a very rapid change. Were you not perimenopausal?

I had my last period at 45. That was the first sign of menopause. No symptoms of peri menopause before that.

xJoy · 26/02/2023 09:05

I'd get periods if I stopped taking progesterone but it doesn't mean I could get pregnant. Two very different things.

Stewball01 · 28/02/2023 14:01

🤷‍♀️ . Good luck.
