To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

Its very very unlikely and the risk of miscarriage is also very high if somebody does conceive.

Zanatdy · 14/02/2023 14:26

Of course you can be, someone’s always got to be that 1%. I’m 46 and no chance I’m giving up contraception anytime soon. A baby at this stage of my life is not what I want, not when my eldest is 30 later this year and only a few years off 18 with youngest of 3

USaYwHatNow · 14/02/2023 14:27

My mum was a 'menopause baby'. My Nan was indeed pregnant at 49 with my mum, gave birth to her at 50.

containsnuts · 14/02/2023 14:28

I think the oldest natural pregnancies are in women aged 55 so it's definitely possible just not very common and of course more risky.

Africa2go · 14/02/2023 14:29

Yes, friend of a friend recently had a joint party for her 70th and her daughter's 21st!!

Anonymous48 · 14/02/2023 14:30

I'm 50 and still have regular periods, so of course I assume that I could get pregnant without contraception.

rothbury · 14/02/2023 14:31

I’m not sure I can wait a few days to find out OP. Can you not do a test today? 😂

QuietlyConfident · 14/02/2023 14:31

Get pregnant: yes very possibly.
Have a baby: much less likely.
Fingers crossed for a negative test OP.

HistoryFanatic · 14/02/2023 14:31

You can't make us wait a few days, OP. 😁

harrassedmumto3 · 14/02/2023 14:32

Good luck, OP - and please keep us posted!

Thewheelweavesasthewheelwills · 14/02/2023 14:33

Are you my sister, it really seems like something I can see her doing. She's not a granny though so I know you're not her.

In all seriousness just do a test, only way to put your mind at ease. Look we all make judgement errors the chances are minuscule but unless you are willing to deal with the outcome use contraception.

Hope it works out the way you want. Let us know, I'm nosy!

I will update, I hate threads where they don't.

It does happen - DH GM had twin in her early 50s.

Posters on here have insisted it must be some young female relatives baby - but no there weren't any in family at the time and late pg weren't unheard of in her family.

It is however unlikely and very high risk of m/c.

Anyway good luck and I hope the test gives you the answer you want.

BeachBlondey · 14/02/2023 14:43

Friend had a baby at 49. It was a donor egg though. Still, she carried to term, no problem. Another person I know, her parents were 49 & 51, her Dad was 2 weeks from retirement, when her Mum had to tell him they were expecting! Shock didn't cover it, apparently! She (the baby) is in her 30's now, and sadly both parents are long dead.

Paturday · 14/02/2023 14:47

Yeah course! My mum’s friend had a baby at 52. All worked out ok.

Danikm151 · 14/02/2023 14:47

It can happen if you’re still ovulating

Sorry I first read that as the shock killed him!

As I said to the last man I had sex with "If I was trying to get pregnant at this age (nearly 49) it wouldn't happen, but given that I'm trying NOT to it probably would!"

Leirvassbu · 14/02/2023 14:53

Yes you could be. I know a couple of people it has happened to.
Hormones are all over the place perimenopause and you can still get pregnant up until periods stop.

Napmum · 14/02/2023 14:54

Those statistics include people who have been trying to get pregnant for years. Fertility is highly individual. Some go through the menopause early, but many people accidentally get pregnant when they are already menopausal (irregular periods). My great aunt was babysat by her nieces, so yes, grandmothers can get pregnant. There was over 25years between her and her older brother.

Definitely get a test and speak to someone about having counselling around if you want this child or not

Notaboutyouthistime · 14/02/2023 14:54

It would be unlikely to result in a baby.

Serpensortia · 14/02/2023 14:54

If your period is due in a few days it might show up on an early detection test, buy a couple. Test with first wee in the morning, and if negative and no period in a few days, then test again.

If you are having periods, you could get pregnant. Women can have a surge of fertility before their periods completely stop, so it is not something I would be toying with, 49 or not.

notacooldad · 14/02/2023 14:56

I’m late 50’s and for my bad luck, I’m still ovulating and having periods.
I guess there’s always a chance I could get pregnant. What an awful thought. My mums aunt had a child at 55 but that was 54 years ago, but theses things do happen.
