To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

Yep, OP isn’t coming back 🙄

Forgot to quote the post I was referencing.

That's not fair. The OP has already said she had to go help a sick parent and would be away until the weekend. I'm sure she wants to do this in the comfort of her own home with her DH's support, especially if it's unwanted news.

The OP's life is not a soap opera with an update 3 times a week, just to keep you entertained.

@CecilyP, you are proving my point. The very vast majority of these will be donor eggs.

Well I know that neither my grandmother or my auntie were written up as ‘medical history’ when they had their babies at 47
Again proving my point. Each year after 40, the likelihood of pregnancy crashes radically each year.

So again, at 47, it is rare, at 49, it is exceptional. Especially if by the time of birth, the person has turned 50.

The gynae I quoted refers to birth from women's own eggs at 49 and 50. Not 45, not 47 but the exact age of OP.

I don’t think so, as your original quote was as below, so did reference women over 45.

It’s exceptionally rare for patients to get pregnant naturally at 50 or over 45. They make history,” said Dr. David Keefe, an obstetrician-gynecologist and fertility researcher at New York University

The piece I quoted also referenced women over 45 and shows not a particularly large difference between the numbers for 1938 and the last year. Before donor eggs became a thing, births for women over 50 ran at around 50 per year in the U.K. Yes definitely very rare but not unique.

Everyone knows it can happen! It is just rather unusual. No need for melodrama
Silly me, of course you'd know better than the quoted expert!

The friend I spoke of was definitely a natural oopsie and there was neither an IVF nor anyone else’s eggs.
This was also over 30yrs ago and IvF was wildly different at the time and not as accessible financially to just anyone.
Statistics are wildly known to be inaccurate.

The quote you posted said ‘at 50 or over 45. They make medical history’. That to me reads that over 45 is medical history.

Hope you get the result you want OP

Sugarfree23 · 16/02/2023 18:13

Remember IVF and donor eggs has probably only been a thing in the last 30 years.
I don't even think ethically many clinics would treat women over 48.
And there can't be that many women who really want babies when they are pushing 50 and thinking of retirement in the next 15 or so years.

Many clinics won’t treat women with their own eggs after the age of 42 in fact - as the success rates are so bad.

Thinking of you OP, try not to stress too much ❤️

Exactly that. 50 is a very very low number. So not impossible but much less probable than quite a few posters implied here.

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 17/02/2023 19:53

@vivainsomnia but it’s not about babies being born, it’s about number of pregnancies

at 50 most pregnancies would result in a miscarriage, sadly. Or an abortion.

the OP was about changes of being pregnant, not chances of a live birth

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 20:06

A lot of posters talking about older relatives giving birth over 50 will actually be an older relative taking on a young daughters baby.

DancingDolly · 17/02/2023 20:13

Slightly off topic but I'm 49 and still taking the pill. It's always suited me and is it possibly masking any early menopause symptoms as all my friends seem to be complaining? I often wonder how I will know I'm going through menopause as pill stops periods. Nurse in surgery just said 'oh you'll have other symptoms '

Anyone else in this boat?!

Yes. Exactly the same. I’m 48 and I’ve not had a period in 5 years due to the pill. I asked about the menopause last time I got my prescription and I just got a funny look and a shrug.

GloomyDarkness · 17/02/2023 20:32

How do I know I've reached menopause if I'm on the pill?

NHs have a page on it.

DancingDolly · 17/02/2023 20:38

Thank you! Sounds like no contraception after 55 is the advice

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/02/2023 20:44

Yeah same problem with periods/menopause. I am 49 and not had a period since being on Mirena, so I have decided to get it replaced next year as I am not happy about going contraception free without concrete proof of menopause. I could keep it in as HRT for another 5 years after it is no longer a contraceptive but I dont want to risk it.

Maireas · 17/02/2023 21:12

Very true, @HowDoYouOwnDisorder - At that age 53% of pregnancies end in miscarriage.

Seriously - OMG 😲
I was pushing 41 when I had IVF, AMH was off the scale.

I've ordered a saucer of milk for you, Mrs Catty.

I'm heading home in a minute, dad is doing much better, thank god.

Thank you very much for all the kind comments and I expected the other bitchy comments too, I've been on here a long time.

As soon as I have a result I will be back.
