To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

Women have got pregnant in their 50s. I'd do a test if I were you.

Do a test

If you read even just the OP’s posts you will see that she has now.

Desertbarncat · 18/02/2023 19:32

Much more likely to be menopause or peri-menopause symptoms.

2crossedout1 · 18/02/2023 19:34

Thank goodness OP!

Lougle · 18/02/2023 19:49

I don't think I'd be breathing a sigh of relief yet. Clear blue aren't all that sensitive.

She's done a test!

I get the impression some posters want OP to be pregnant!

It's negative! I feel hugely relieved and still a bit stupid.

DH bought clear blue not the early one but as I'm due on tomorrow I think the result is correct.

Thanks very much for keeping me company during a shitty week.

Glad you got the result you wanted.
Were you not just the tiniest bit sad for a moment?
Wish you’s both all the best.

Yeah. I always felt like a negative test was a little bit of hope being snuffed out in the world.

CocoFifi · 18/02/2023 19:59

Totally possible. My gran gave birth to my mum at 49, my MIL was 48 when she had my husband and my best friend got pregnant a couple of years ago at the age of 50

Awh, I'm glad you've got some relief. FWIW, I've had 3 DC and since my last pregnancy my period and pre menstrual symptoms since being off contraception are much stronger. Each month despite being careful and protected I spend at least one day convinced I'm pregnant!

Madmeerkat · 18/02/2023 20:11

A colleague at work
got pregnant at 48. The stats said it would be virtually Impossible to happen. Unfortunately it was an ectopic she had to have medical treatment. Id
do a test!

CrinkleCutChips · 18/02/2023 20:24

I’d feel sorry for you if you are. My son is 20 now and I absolutely love the freedom it brings. I couldn’t imagine rewinding the clock.

MixedCouple · 18/02/2023 20:33

As a Health care professional we always say reproductive age is from 9 - 55. We always ask women om that age range.

Try the coil / IUD for long term contraception or implant.

soraya · 18/02/2023 20:34

the nhs advice is that you have to still use contraception until 2 years after menopause. Uk average for menopause is 52. That said, most people would try hard to conceive naturally at 49.

Even if the op was, which she isn't, as she's updated so. There are options. No one needs to turn any clocks back

Btjdkfnn · 18/02/2023 20:43

I am glad you're not pregnant op, but make sure you have 2 years without periods and a blood test to verify no more babies can be made!

Blimey - three more! How many is that on this thread now?
Most people on here seem to know a 50 year old (and beyond) who gave birth.

Jack80 · 18/02/2023 21:12

I’ve heard people who thought their periods had stopped as going through menopause they thought and got caught. Good luck

HemlockStarglimmer · 18/02/2023 21:15

And another one here. Thirty plus years ago I knew a woman who had a baby when she was 49/50.

beALittleSceptical · 18/02/2023 21:24

Looking at all the people in this thread saying there are instances in their families of healthy babies being born to women nearing 50 who already had other children... remember that giving birth out of wedlock used to be a big deal. It wasn't uncommon, if your unwed daughter got pregnant, to send her away to give birth and then raise the child as your own, so that her "little sibling" was actually her own child. I wager some (not all) of these apparent cases of very late birth were actually like that.

OutofEverything · 18/02/2023 21:40

@beALittleSceptical I totally agree. Because although women over 50 do have babies naturally, it is a tiny number.

I spent my late teens with everyone assuming my little sister was mine. She now tells me she used to think that she might be mine as well and it was a big family secret. Nope. My mother had another baby when I was in my late teens and she was mid 40's. I had two schoolfriends and one friend in the next street whose mothers also had babies at the same time....

Given how many kids were at my school, and how many local families I knew, that is actually still a small proportion of families overall. 4 of us out of hundreds - so it's not at all surprising that most people know someone who had a baby in their 40's or 50's, we all know hundreds, thousands, of people. We remember things that are different and stand out, so we might not remember how many siblings our friend had 40 yrs ago - but we would remember that one of them was born when we were both in our late teens BECAUSE it was not the norm.

OutofEverything · 18/02/2023 21:49

A baby in your forties yes, fifties no.
