To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

Seriously - OMG 😲
I was pushing 41 when I had IVF, AMH was off the scale.

AMH is irrelevant! You can have high AMH and lots of eggs but the egg quality is poor due to age (my situation).

Some people don't seem to understand that the plural of anecdote isn't data.
Anyway, OP, I hope you're doing ok, it's not a great time going through the menopause, and you've got unwell elderly parents in the mix. It's tough.
I hope you're doing ok, what an emotional time.

SameToo · 18/02/2023 08:31

Good luck OP

Sunflowergirl1 · 18/02/2023 08:38

FGS..go and get a Mirena. Brilliant and stopped my periods full stop. Will see you to 55 easily and you will be done then

AppleKatie · 18/02/2023 08:38

Hope you’re ok OP!

Well someone upthread said you can ovulate after you’ve gone through the menopause……

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 18/02/2023 12:18

@DancingDolly I can no longer take my pill (Yasmin) at 50, so had a few month or assess where I was with meno

well, I was still regular including a pregnancy scare…

am getting the Mirena fitted next week

i would have like to continue on Yasmin, but after 50 you can’t get a prescription

Holyguacamollie · 18/02/2023 13:11

It's negative! I feel hugely relieved and still a bit stupid.

DH bought clear blue not the early one but as I'm due on tomorrow I think the result is correct.

Thanks very much for keeping me company during a shitty week.

Glad you got the news you wanted OP.

Maireas · 18/02/2023 13:35

Good news 😊!
Not stupid at all.

Reigateforever · 18/02/2023 15:28

Glad you got the news you wanted. How about going to the doctor/ gynecologist to not only avoid another hiccup/scare but also HRT.

HildasLostSock · 18/02/2023 16:23

Phew! No need to feel stupid OP. The stats/likelihood of it happening are low enough to make you feel "safe" and personally I was never taught this stuff at school everything I learnt was via Google, not always the most clear or reliable source... glad you got the result you wanted.

whatausername · 18/02/2023 17:27

Wahey! Thank you for updating OP.

menopausalbloat · 18/02/2023 17:39

My gran had my mum at 50.

Loopyaboutmy2boys · 18/02/2023 18:01

I never found clearblue tests to be much use until a few days late - I would have used a first response early response - a negative on that would be a true negative

Twentyfirstcenturymumma · 18/02/2023 18:03

Not unheard of. Good luck

Salome61 · 18/02/2023 18:10

Glad you got the result you wanted :)

ThistleTits · 18/02/2023 18:10

@Holyguacamollie change of life babies they used to call them. Do the test.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 18/02/2023 18:12

I had my last at 46, I’m sure I could have had more at 49.
menopause hit at around 54/55 for me.

xJoy · 18/02/2023 18:18

Good news OP what a relief. I had to have a scan before they'd prescribe the back to back progesterone only pill at 49. They told me I had just ovulated. Mind you, I wasn't worried about having got pregnant

Petlover9 · 18/02/2023 18:26

Riverlee · 14/02/2023 14:01

Yes you can get pregnant at 49. The only sure ways of not getting pregnant is not to have sex, or have a hysterectomy (extreme measures, I know!).

My grandmother had my aunt at 50 and my uncle was born a year later - neither of them were very bright and were referred to 'change of life children' by the other 7 who were all working when it happened

GUARDIAN1 · 18/02/2023 18:27

Do a test

Justbefair · 18/02/2023 18:29

You absolutely can, a friend of mine was using contraception at age 46 and still got pregnant! Some women are just very fertile and will fall easily. X

CatA27 · 18/02/2023 19:13

My partners mum had him at 49 and I'm very glad she did but I can't imagine doing it myself 😬

eastegg · 18/02/2023 19:14

Quite a lot of these replies sound like ‘don’t worry, the chance of miscarriage is high’. Something about that isn’t sitting right with me. Maybe because it sounds as if the person posting thinks miscarriage is really straightforward as long as you didn’t want the baby.

It also a bit of an odd response to the prospect of an unwanted pregnancy, when abortion is safe and legal.

Maybe I’m reading it wrong though…

I really hope things turn out ok OP.
