To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

Yes, you could. Do a test and good luck!

BloomingXmas · 14/02/2023 13:59

I know so many women who fell pregnant later in life! All accidentally!!

Beamur · 14/02/2023 14:00

Well, if you're still having periods then you're still ovulating.
I guess the odds of a pregnancy continuing aren't great though but it's possible.
Cherie Blair (wife of Tony) had her last at 45.

MrsElm · 14/02/2023 14:01

It's certainly possible, but not definite. There's only one way to find out.

Riverlee · 14/02/2023 14:01

Yes you can get pregnant at 49. The only sure ways of not getting pregnant is not to have sex, or have a hysterectomy (extreme measures, I know!).

Eastereggsboxedupready · 14/02/2023 14:03

I had a mmc at 8 weeks at 45. A few days off 49 I had a loss at home. Never confirmed but I know what I saw!

Indáirire · 14/02/2023 14:03

My hospital is currently treating a pregnant woman who is 52. Not impossible. I'd get sterilised if I were you.

GiltEdges · 14/02/2023 14:03

Well for the odds to be 0-1%, someone has to be that 1 don’t they? Otherwise it’d just be 0% 🤷‍♀️

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 14:04

Oh god. I feel like a total idiot.

RudsyFarmer · 14/02/2023 14:05

Extremely unlikely. I wouldn’t even worry about it. Google perimenopause. Same symptoms 🤭

WhiteFang · 14/02/2023 14:06

I’d test!

MeinKraft · 14/02/2023 14:07

Very unlikely and even if you are, chances of pregnancy loss are very high so it doesn't necessarily mean you'd be having a baby.

Dinkleberg · 14/02/2023 14:07

It's uncommon but definitely not unheard of. The oldest known natural conception is 57. If you're stil having periods you're still ovulating, and therefore still able to get pregnant.

Comedycook · 14/02/2023 14:09

Stranger things have happened.

LulooLemon · 14/02/2023 14:09

Please test, then you'll know. Good luck.

Scaevola · 14/02/2023 14:12

Yes, you need to test.

The rule of thumb is that you can abandon contraception after 2 years with no periods if under 50, 1 year if 50+

If you're still having regular periods, then the chances of conception are pretty good. (Whether that translates into a healthy baby at term is another matter, miscarriage rates increase with age)

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 14:12

Thanks all, I really do not want a baby at this stage of my life. I'm a granny FGS.

I will test in a few days and hopefully I'm not. I'll sort contraceptives out asap.

Thanks for being kind, I appreciate it.

I was, OP.
Time for a test I think.

Tigertigertigertiger · 14/02/2023 14:13

Good luck 🤞🏼

At 49?

I’m hoping you get the answer you want. Menopausal symptoms can be similar….don’t panic just yet.

SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 14/02/2023 14:19

If you have a regular period there is definitely a chance of pregnancy. So many oopsie babies born to women in their mid to late 40s who think they're too old to concieve!

Chances of things going wrong are much higher though. Over 50% chance of miscarriage and a 1 in 20 chance of genetic abnormality (including 1 in 30 chance of downs syndrome).

Wilkolampshade · 14/02/2023 14:23

@Holyguacamollie well, 48 and 10 months, yes. Very similar circumstances... I did go onto miscarry, sorry. Tbh, I think DH was the most thrown by the whole thing, I felt like a total idiot.
Good luck love. X

2tired2bewitty · 14/02/2023 14:23

My great grandmother was 50 when my grandfather was born in 1911, so long before any form of assisted conception, so it is possible, just less probable.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/02/2023 14:24

Sounds like you're still having regular periods?

I'm also 49 but I've only had 3 periods in the last 18 months, so I'm probably a lot nearer to menopause than you.

I've just started on HRT and my doctor gave me a very clear warning that it wasn't contraception and that this was still needed.

Anyway, I hope you get the result you want.
