To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

Lots of relatives on Mumsnet who just missed out on a Guinness world record it seems!

Indeed. The thing is, that it used to be so rare, the women were named, you can look them up!
I looked up the women recently giving birth at 50, and they all seem to have had donor eggs or some other form of assisted conception. There are a couple of exceptions.

Kennykenkencat · 14/02/2023 15:30

Someone I know got pregnant at 49 and gave birth at 50.

They had been having fertility treatment for years and had decided that their time had passed and they had come to terms with being childless.

Also know someone who was 47 when she had her 3rd

Fifiellz · 14/02/2023 15:31

I'm nearly 48 and gave up on contraception for the same reason as you.

I've had 2 chemicals this year, both times crapped myself but would have seen it through as my kids are still relatively young.

I've put myself back on the pill though as i'm obviously still fertile. My doctor told me that it was possible to fall pregnant at this age, much less likely for it to proceed into a viable pregnancy.

Thingsthatgo · 14/02/2023 15:31

Oh my. I'm a little bit jealous. I nearly 48 and I secretly would love to be pregnant again.

skingraft · 14/02/2023 15:32

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pregnancy_over_age_50

lits of examples here I find it so interesting!

notacooldad · 14/02/2023 15:33

I would imagine that it would have created a lot of interest, medically in those days. No doubt her case notes were of significant interest.
No idea! I only met the aunty as a young child and met the "baby" once when they came up north to visit when I was a teenager. I've never thought about them in decades apart from seeing some old family photos. I remember nan talking about it and saying she would rather throw herself in the canal than ever be pregnant again!
I think I would have felt like that at 40 never mind older!

Rather other people than me!

CecilyP · 14/02/2023 15:37

Before IVF using donor eggs, around 50 women over 50 had babies each year in the U.K. While it is possible you could be one of them, it is also pretty unlikely!

My cousin had 3 children in her 30s thrn has met a new man. She now has two children with him, one born when she was 52 and one born when she was 53. She conceived naturally.

Planned?
I was just joking about this with my sister at the weekend.she's divorced with two sons of 21 and 19/ she's 51 and her new ( ish) partner,is 56 and has two daughters of 30 and 24 ,she's just missed a period ,( he's had a vasectomy ,but still) e were laughing about her having another baby !

Oh god. I feel like a total idiot.

I'm not surprised in all honesty.

MyAnacondaMight · 14/02/2023 15:39

So many miracle babies from mumsnetters’ grandparents reported on this thread! 😏

I’ll be the first to acknowledge that my great grandmother’s miracle pregnancy in her 40s was in fact her 16 year old daughter’s.

ChateauMargaux · 14/02/2023 15:39

While it is technically possible, it is statistically unlikely. MN anecdotes aside - of course.

Two of my SILs use to work in London hospitals where there were regularly mothers of newborns who had them in their late 40s/early 50s. Most of the women had very large families and had no issues giving birth.

I had a school friend as a teen whose mum gave birth at 49. My friend wasn't from a small family but not as large as the families of the ladies my SILs worked with.

At 49?

Yes definitely! If anything to put your mind at rest. Otherwise, so you can consider your options early.

Right. Well, it makes for interesting reading when you look it up. The natural cases are very closely supervised and the case notes of great interest.

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 15:43

I'm shocked at how many people have anecdotes to share. Honestly I feel like a total idiot.

Hope you get the result you want, OP.

HellyPen · 14/02/2023 15:45

My MIL was born when her mother was 46 (it was twins). I have also wondered over the years whether her older sister could have been her real mother, I think the age difference is around 15 years. But I’m not sure. The sister did have a teenage pregnancy a few years later which was acknowledged to be hers. Also twins are more likely as you get older.

ExistenceOptional · 14/02/2023 15:45

Totally possible. Getting pregnant is not that uncommon at your age, carrying the baby and giving birth to a baby is the the part with very low odds.

Partyandbullshit · 14/02/2023 15:46

Happened to my grandmother, when my mum (her first child) had just got married. I'm really close to my uncle!

Tessisme · 14/02/2023 15:46

My mum always used to talk about the woman who lived next door to her where she grew up. She had a baby at 52 and was happy she would have someone to look after her in old age🙄 Apparently she was - and I quote - 'built like a barrel' and didn't know she was pregnant until she was very far along!

I had my second at 45 by the way ...

That used to be incredibly common.

Test today OP, no point putting it off. Good luck!

Redebs · 14/02/2023 15:49

Yes, definitely a few grand children born to women in their fifties!
